Yes, you can "surf the internet" with it, but in a very limited way... - http:// pages only (no ftp:, no https:// no other stuff); on most pages no login and thus no replies possible! - text only (max. 40 chars per line) - the software for the Dragoncart should be loaded from DOS, it uses RAM under the OS, so that excludes several DOS versions and means XL/XE only... DOS memlo must be smaller than $2000... - loading a small part of a webpage (1/8 or 1/16) takes approx. 5 minutes, so loading a topic like this one would take more than 20 minutes, thats not really funny or entertaining to say the least; its like using internet with a 300 Baud modem... - tested with me + two friends (at different locations / cities here in germany! with different internet connections and different speed) on various PAL 800XL (64k and 576k RAM) and PAL XE (64k, 128k and 320k RAM) machines, results: with XE machines the webpages and their subpages worked, with XL computers most webpages did not load at all (or much slower than on the XE) and if they loaded, then the subpages did not load or always gave a time out error; me I only have XL computers, my friends have also XE machines - timing problems ?!? - tested successfully with the smartphone sites of CNN (then www.cnnmobile.com, nowadays m.cnn.com), DER SPIEGEL (m.spiegel.com) and a few other german news pages; the standard http pages (e.g. www.cnn.com) of these sites did NOT work - tested successfully with Atari Age (main page and subpages on XE machines, on XL machines only the main page, the subpages like e.g. the forums did never load); Abbuc (same here, main page and subpages on XE machines, on XL machines only the main page, subpages did not load or better gave a time out error); - timing problems ?!? I wrote several replies at the Abbuc forum (use Google translate: http://www.abbuc.de/community/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8568&hilit=Dragoncart ) and after a short while I sold my Dragoncart, since my Internet provider did not like the slowness of this cart and disconnected me quite often for several hours (so I could not use the Internet with Atari + Dragoncart nor my PC for several hours). If I remember correctly, after several days of testing, my internet provider disconnected me for a whole day, so I said no, thank you, I prefer surfing the internet with a higher speed than 300 Baud... Last not least, XXL showed several videos of his internet hardware (?) or software - is he using the Dragoncart or a different hardware ?!? Would be more interested in his stuff... This cart is an improvement, I hope lan cable connection will be improved too.I don't know Contiki but the awesome crossplatform online racer 8bit-Slicks needs to be updated. I have a W5100 board in cupboard for ages. Had the same idea once, then WiFi boards came along... Still great to see the W5100 utilized. It won't be compatible with the 1st DragonCart, but having the TCP/IP stack with up to four connections simultaneously running on a co-processor would be a great addition! Contiki seems to have W5100 support (https://github.com/contiki-os/contiki/blob/master/cpu/6502/net/w5100.S) In general, I reckon most (if not all) DragonCart software needs patching for this DragonCart 2, although I expect stuff like 8-bit Slicks to be updated pretty fast. Reading these replies, it sounds like a real improvement over the existing (old) Dragoncart. On the other hand, we will not know for sure, if the already available software for the Dragoncart will get updated and can only hope that the authors (or others) will do that for us... I really would love to see an ECI (PBI) device where the microcontroller offloaded the TCP/IP stack and other shit the 6502 just doesn't need to be saddled with doing. Also, the Atari 8-bit port of contiki (that I have seen) is just shit compared to what is out there. Slow ass 40 column "browser" that can do a nice 300 baud. Uses none of the Atari features. Compare to Ice-T XE's blazing fast 9600 baud 80 column browser with limited colour support and a full 16kB scrolling buffer. Sorry to be "negative nancy". Just taking the shit for stating a somewhat common (but withheld) opinion, or wishing for something better. with the stack off loaded to the w5100 and some supporting bits and pieces added, this is more easily handled.. many more implementations could have been done for the original dragon cart, but with all the standard LAN card features/bells and whistles added to the Dragon Cart II we should see much more done for it. -Remember the original Dragon Cart was done as a proof of concept that was also designed to see how much the Atari itself could do... not relying on other tech... If the Atari could do the actual work it was expected other and better solutions would follow. I am sure it's outlined here on AA or on the archives of the web. I am pleased with what was accomplished and was happy to participate in testing of the cartridge and different software involved. I really enjoyed the early work on telnet and other such offering in both serial and ethereal form. So you are not really taking a dump on it or the software, it was expected that others would come and build on it- maybe they will! 8 bit slicks played very well on the Atari with Dragon Cart.
