flashjazzcat
Yes, I'm indeed pissed off. Sorry if that wasn't obvious enough. And thanks in case you actually wanted to help. I don't know whether to be pleased to be thanked or insulted by the incredibly patronising tone. Way to deflect responses in the thread, I guess. ol.sc
Just deflecting responses like "Just give the hardware to someone who knows the A8 and isn't intent on making the hardware work in some absurd proprietary manner." What would you propose to do with insults like this instead?
flashjazzcat
It's unfortunate that you took that remark as an insult, since there's nothing insulting about it. It's a suggestion based on my observation of other projects which ended up working in a proprietary manner, did not observe standard protocols, or simply failed to work with other popular upgrades. Does this mean no-one knows what they're doing here or that the thing will end up working in an absurdly proprietary manner? Of course not, but it can happen. I've been around here for a decade and I have seen them all. Consider it another way of saying that the addition of a firmware developer with vision and copious knowledge of the hardware scene should result in a fine device. In sorry, anyway, for intervening when things are apparently going so well without my help or advice. I am no expert on the subject of network protocols and am clearly incapable of contributing anything useful to this weighty discussion. My apologies!
Mr Robot
Oliver; meet Jon. Jon is an assembly level developer of firmware for Atari devices as well as an expert on all things "Atari hardware and addons". He writes graphical user interfaces and word processors when he isn't making youtube videos on how to repair and install upgrades to Atari hardware. Jon; meet Oliver. Oliver is a software developer who is developing an operating system called Contiki for 6502, targeting C64/128, Apple//e and Atari computers. He is currently developing a new ethernet hardware addon for the Atari. Maybe now would be a good time to go out, catch a breath, come back in, and start your discussion again.
ol.sc
@flashjazzcat: Thanks for your detailed explanation - honestly! @Mr Robot: Thanks for trying to help, but there's no need for introduction - at least from my POV: flashjazzcat (Jon ?) has been there helping with answers in about every question thread I opened so far in this forum. I admire his work (been reading through the many pages of the thread on his GUI development) and appreciate his advice.
+mytek
Yep Jon's advice can definitely be trusted. And his 6502 software skills are par none. He was an incredible asset to my 1088XEL project, and I dare say without it, the hardware would have been severely lacking. We worked cohesively on the synergy between Jon's U1MB BIOS and my hardware design, and ended up all the better because of it. The XEL-CF was the toughest part, and required no less then 3 different hardware prototypes to bring it fully into fruition. Without Jon's help it would have been a very sad IDE interface with limited versatility. Since the U1MB and Jon's BIOS for it have made it's way into so many systems, it's imperative that strides be made to make any new piece of hardware compatible with it. This includes your proposed ethernet project.
AtariSociety
So I know whether to keep my name on the list or remove, can someone confirm what this device is... I had thought it was an Atari cartridge that would allow my 8 Bit Ataris to connect to my network/router via standard ethernet connection which in turn allows the Atari to access data on my network and internet too. Is that still the case? TJ
Peruchi
If there`s any chance that this device would be produced as a cartridge, I`m very interested!

invisible kid
AtariSociety, Peruchi, As far I know this is a cartridge. Also as far as I know this is a basic ethernet device with programs such as telnet and a text-based http browser. +Philsan
Months has passed and some questions are still unaswerered. Following Dragon Cart, the first ethernet cartridge for A8, it seems that two new ethernet devices will be produced: - unnamed cartridge (cartridge solution, in this thread there's an interest check), by Duddie, a known AA member, producer of various products - Dragon Cart II (PBI and ECI bus solutions, despite the name), by ol.sc, a known AA member too, A8 Contiki and IP65 C/ASM libraries (used by 8bit-Slicks) developer These are cartridge and bus solutions, so it's easy to understand that difference (for example with a cartridge solution you cannot load software from a multicart but you have to use a SIO device). IMHO the big question is software compatibility. I own the original Dragon Cart and I used it with: - Contiki (browser...), by ol.sc - 8bit-Slicks, the awesome cross-platform (Apple II, A8, C64) online car racer, by 8bit-Dude, that uses ol.sc IP65 libraries Evetually we'll have another cool cross-platform online game by 8bit-Dude, Grubs. I hope that both devices, despite hardware differences, would be compatible, otherwise the already limited userbase would be splitted up and coders would not be encouraged.
