New Dragon Ethernet cartridge interest check

Recommended Posts

I hope that both devices, despite hardware differences, would be compatible, otherwise the already limited userbase would be splitted up and coders would not be encouraged.

I don't expect them to be compatible at the hardware level (and also not to the original DragonCart), but IP65 will definitely get support for both. If ol.sc doesn't implement it, I will do...

So for existing programs a recompile/relink will probably be needed.

regards,

chris

Months has passed and some questions are still unaswerered.

Following Dragon Cart, the first ethernet cartridge for A8, it seems that two new ethernet devices will be produced:

- unnamed cartridge (cartridge solution, in this thread there's an interest check), by Duddie, a known AA member, producer of various products

- Dragon Cart II (PBI and ECI bus solutions, despite the name), by ol.sc, a known AA member too, A8 Contiki and IP65 C/ASM libraries (used by 8bit-Slicks) developer

These are cartridge and bus solutions, so it's easy to understand that difference (for example with a cartridge solution you cannot load software from a multicart but you have to use a SIO device).

IMHO the big question is software compatibility.

I own the original Dragon Cart and I used it with:

- Contiki (browser...), by ol.sc

- 8bit-Slicks, the awesome cross-platform (Apple II, A8, C64) online car racer, by 8bit-Dude, that uses ol.sc IP65 libraries

Evetually we'll have another cool cross-platform online game by 8bit-Dude, Grubs.

I hope that both devices, despite hardware differences, would be compatible, otherwise the already limited userbase would be splitted up and coders would not be encouraged.

I think the above considerations are even more important.

A third ethernet device has been announced today, 8bit-Hub.

It connects A8, Apple II, C64, Oric 1 and Atmos, Atari Lynx to Internet + has 4 joystick ports and 1 PS2 mouse port.

To me the 8bit-Hub falls into a different category of network solutions. They offload the complete networking from the 6502 with their own micro controller. You can love them because they allow to do things otherwise simply impossible and because they make things way more easy. You you can hate them because they reduce your retro machine to a terminal (which you then can customize with e.g. a multiplayer game UI).

Anyhow, the 8bit-Hub is for sure not the first solution of that kind:

- The ESP-based "WiFi-modems".

- For the C64:

- The Coment (http://cometplus.net/)

- The 1541 Ultimate (http://www.1541ultimate.net/) now that its network API was published (https://github.com/xlar54/ultimateii-dos-lib)

Just my two cents, Oliver

Ok, I since the topic was mainly discussed here:

I think, that it is possible to integrate a socket listener in RespeQt.

Whether it is feasible to use them as disks (D1: etc), I cannot say. That's a question, I would to forward to FJC or any other person, being on friendly terms with the OS ;)

But I'm pretty sure, we can go the RCl/PCLINK route and speak directly to any of these network devices.

It should be very possible since even when using a network drive in the respeqt slot I am able to use it. As shown or mentioned in a previous post.... so I bet it won't be a hard as you think but not as gentle a task as I believe it to be :o

Does anyone see an issue with the interest listings in post #186 & #187 compared to #180 which I believe to be the most accurate interest list prior to #186? If some folks have dropped off it then I can understand, but I know I have not lost interest. ;)

could we properly get some TCP offloading on these devices? I do not think that using a CS8900 today is a good idea, at all (I never thought it was, but...)

-Thom

Definitely, TCP offloading is a must, everything possible to take burdens off the Atari needs to be done. The original project was to see if the Atari itself could do all the work, and it's proven it can, I won't re hash the explanations the creators of the original project or those of anyone who tested or my own posts that explained this all previously somewhere on the forums. We have a number of utilities/apps/etc and a game that show it's all going to be that much better if the device does all the tasks any of the great NIC cards have done on machines over time. It's time for the Atari to have a performance networking solution. It's going to be so much better if we do so.
