Is Monty Schmidt still lurking around out there anywhere?

Recommended Posts

Is Monty Schmidt, the creator of 4A/DOS still lurking around out there? It would be kind of neat for him to learn that his 4A/DOS has really come into it's own (decades later) with the F18A, TIPI and it's new evolution to permanent cartridge format. Who knows, he might even be willing to release his source code if he still has it, or possibly expand on it's capabilities.

I wouldn't mind if source code was available, I'd like to expand on it if I get some time without having to recreate it.

That would be awesome, wouldn't it? Monty managed to pack a lot into it's original 8K package for the SuperCart configuration. That memory limitation no longer applies, so I can only imagine the sheer POWER that could be unleashed in an upgraded version.

In the event Monty doesn't have the 4ADOS source (AKA; Command Dos) I do have it.

Monty built up his music tools software company Sonic Foundry through some exciting years.
They made Sound Forge and ACID. I read an interview with him during those days. Sony acquired most of Sonic Foundry.
Later they pivoted to a product, MediaSite, for serving online lectures (media asset management for universities).
Currently Monty is CTO at InHub, whose product manages e-docs for investment managers.
Probably he has left retro hobbies behind. However, he has stayed around Madison, WI (where he went to university).

I live right up the road. :)

I heard it's a little cold up there. It was a toasty 23F here last night.

Sorry for the OT...

Sorry I'm late to the game answering this post (only a year late) but yes I'm still lurking around.  I happen to have made my way in a circuitous route to Canada, the land of Ryte Data, and am now residing in Ottawa.

Great to see people are still enjoying the stuff I wrote 35 years ago.  That's just crazy.

Monty Hello!

Yes, enjoying it the correct word!   Your 4A DOS has been tweaked over the years and now it can be put into it's own cartridge used without needing the CHARA1 file on disk.  It's also been modified to take over the TI so now when one turns on their computer, DOS is immediately on the screen, or a batch file menu.  I originally purchased your 4A DOS in the late 80's for my SuperCart, but as you can see it's evolved over the decades.

Most of the stuff I use is from Ryte Data.
