Atari2600Lives #1 Posted June 17, 2003 Ok, I have Atari 2600, Intellivision, NES , SNES, Commodore 64, Vectrex, Odessey 2,Saturn,Genesis, Sega CD, 3DO,Dreamcast, Nintendo Cube, Xbox, PC games galore. I had never , for whatever reason, played a ColecoVision. Some friends at work swore by them and I thought I would give one a spin. I got one from Ebay and hooked it up today. Some of the games were really impressive visually, Donkey Kong and Centipede come to mind. Some had some real good game play like Space Fury (first time I ever played the game...real cool game and addictive), some were real hard to get used to like Time Pilot (the controls were strange). Some were just Ok like Cosmic Avenger and Turbo (I never playd Turbo correctly, amybe it's something I was doing but I could not get proper response form the controllers even thoguht they played Ok in other games). Positives: Overall the graphics on the Colecovision were very good. Negatives: The negatives are that I found the controls seemed real sluggish. Games like time pilot and Turbo were real hard on the hands. Even Donkey King felt a bit off. it seems like a delayed response sometimes. I had bad controllers to begin with, they were real sticky (I will address this on another thread), when I got a few that worked , it just seemed kind of unresponsive. Compared to the lighting quickness of old Stella , well it just does not compare. I am wondering if the responisiveness gets better with newer or better working controllers, is this sluggishness on the controls something that plagued the system? All in all I am happy with this addition to my collection.
King Atari #2 Posted June 18, 2003 I don't have the actual system (yet), but the controls seem okay on emulator. I agree with you on DK, it looks good but just doesn't 'feel' right. Still a good game, though. All in all, it's a fine system with some really great games. Congrats on your purchase.
Ze_ro #3 Posted June 18, 2003 (I never playd Turbo correctly, amybe it's something I was doing but I could not get proper response form the controllers even thoguht they played Ok in other games). I don't actually have Turbo... but as far as I know, the game requires the steering wheel to play. I am wondering if the responisiveness gets better with newer or better working controllers, is this sluggishness on the controls something that plagued the system? I've never had any problem with my deck... and I've had the controllers for 20 years. I've never cleaned mine, but you might want to try that before writing them off. I know most people have nothing good to say about the CV controllers, but I happen to like them. I guess they're an acquired taste that you have to get used to or something, because I have no problems with them at all. --Zero
Lemmi #4 Posted June 18, 2003 ugh the steering wheel for the colecovision isnt much better then the controllers for Turbo, you really have to turn that wheel alot to get the car to move, i think the controllers respond better and if you want good controllers ive found the White adam computer ones to have less problems, probably because they really didnt get used as much (well atleast by the people who actually just used the computer part) but clean up those ones you got first, and if you think there is still something wrong with them, i think i have about 3 or 4 extra coleco controllers in a box somewhere down here just have to remember where
Zeus #5 Posted June 18, 2003 I agree with ze_ro, the controllers may be an acquired taste. I grew up playing CV games on an ADAM, and only started on an Atari much later. The funny thing about the Donkey Kong "feel" thing, is that I have it in the reverse, it just doesn't feel right on an Atari.
jsoper #6 Posted June 18, 2003 I like the CV for all it's uncommon games like Frenzy. Donkey Kong is fun on the CV but it's hard to turn the top corner on the girder level. The controllers get a little better if you just work the stick with your thumb. I usually play with a psx dual shock controller and adapter because I like the analog pad.
