8 bit ports over too ST/STE

A fair few made it over, though you'd not really call many "ports".

Even the legendary Star Raiders but not a shadow on the original.

Some Atari games, some 3rd party games and some that were parallel releases though the 8-bit was trailing off by the time the ST had been around about a year or two.

I'd be hard pressed to name a legacy 800 game that was years later released on the ST and was better overall.

I remember quite a few, Immediately coming to mind are Star Raiders, Moon Patrol, Deluxe Space Invaders, Flight Simulator II (Except the ST version could LINK with another over null modem or modem and fly together, would have been cool if it worked with the 8-bit version too...)

I reviewed the list at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Atari_ST_gamesand know of these on the 8-Bit too:

221B Baker Street
Alternate Reality: The City
Arkanoid
Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh (Maybe these two were on ST first?)
Asteroids Deluxe
Breakout
Commando
F-15 Strike Eagle
Flight Simulator II
Gauntlet (inspired by DANDY on the 8-bit)
Hacker
HardBall!
Most Infocom text adventures probably
International Karate
Karateka
MIDI Maze (I know, ST version was first :) )
Pawn, The
Phantasie
Revenge of the Mutant Camels
Scott Adams Adventures
Silent Service
Spy vs. Spy
Spy vs. Spy II
Super Breakout
Temple of Apshai
Universe 2 (I think only universe 1 was on the 8-bit)
Ultima II
Ultima III
Ultima IV

No, it wouldn't have been cool, FSII is boring crap only for those who want a bit of education on flying, because it is far, far too slow and networking would have made that even worse. Now, a hacked version today, with Rapidus boards in both machines would be cool.

The ST version was much smoother, had a bit more scenery and in general more fun to play. I had both and never enjoyed the 8-bit version much for the reasons you mention- the framerate was what? (3fps max?)

But it was far from amazing on the ST too, it was just a product ahead of its time, trying to run on hardware that couldn't realize the vision.

I had started to bring up the Crown Land conversion, as I had stumbled upon it while poking around in the Super XE thread, but later decided not to, because the specific art decisions, seemed to fit within the specs and limitations of what that proposed system might be capable of and what its games might look like. Odd speculative thing.

Speaking of Crownland, was there any update on it's ST release date? Its looks ace.

I compiled this list of conversions (or clones) in late 2017 for my ST database research. It's missing some newer titles like Pang, Merchant or In Nihilum Revertis but otherwise should be fairly complete. Happy to learn from any missing ports if you spot something that's not in the list yet :)

  • 2 months later...

Had things turned out differently we could of seen:

Spindizzy..games creator wanted to do it on the ST, publisher did not. .so we got Spindizzy Worlds instead.

The Living Daylights..supposedly being done by Sculptured Software.

Work had started on ST versions of Beach Head 1+2 and Raid Over Moscow.

Arkanoid, Asteroids, Gauntlet and Rampage were much better on ST than A8...

Only played Ninja on C64 and A8 so cannot compare with Ninja Mission on the ST.

Not a fan of ST Star Raiders..

Screaming Wings was meh on A8 but dire on the ST..putting in samples from Aliens did nothing for it.

Flying Shark on the ST better than Tiger Attack on A8 with it's odd colour choices on the planes and C64 Phantoms Of The Asteriod in game music

Starquake is another that springs to mind.

I never went much on it on the A8, but put a lot into it on the C64 and later the ST.

Starquake II was underway on the ST but sadly never finished.

Head Over Heels is another..limped out on A8 as a budget title after being held in limbo, Ocean making clear they would not port it to the XEGS ..

ST version superb and Colin Porch working on a sequel on the ST until health issues meant he sadly had to abandon it

Reading the thread title, my immediate thought was "Adding an SIO port to the ST/STE?" ;)

There were plans for SIO2PC type cables using MAX232 chips available almost immediately. I built one and hard-wired it into my 800 with the cable routed through the RF cable opening and a DB-25 plug to fit the ST‘s serial port. With the right software that might work the other way round, too.

A few more spring to mind.

Into The Eagles Nest which i loved on the C64 was fantastic on the ST and i believe the A8 version is pretty decent as well?

Trailblazer is another, only played on C64 and ST but believe the A8 version holds it's own.

A8 seemed to do 'Uridium' (via clones of...Oxygene, Mirax Force and Thunderfox) better than Uridium itself on the ST, though no hardware scrolling on ST did not help, crying shame Jamie Woodhouse's Sideways was never released on ST

Andromeda Software seemed to really screw up International Karate when bringing that to the ST..another missed opportunity

Not A8 but I, Ball on the C64 worked much better than on the ST..ditto Trantor:The Last Storm Trooper and Starglider on the 128K ZX Spectrum..gameplay changes to ST version on the former and latter, plus Spectrum version having missions, more speech etc.

Thing i found at the time moving from the 8 bit systems to the ST and buying the same games on the ST, you were not longer paying £10 or under for a 486 bases game (Trailblazer was originally a Commodore C16 game) and now you were paying £19.95 upwards, you expected more than higher resolution graphics and sampled sounds etc.

Even great games like Ranarama on the ST could do little to hide their 8 bit origins.

To be honest I often found the home made ports were more fun and technically better (in some cases) than the proper software house port.

In general what we got on the Amiga (no ST at the time for me) was mostly meh, cheap fast produced stuff with only basic modifications but what was worse was they buggered around with the game play, normally screwing it up. Most games that were ported just didn't feel right for me. That's not to say there were not some really good ports but in general they stank imho.

Early Ultima versions were close but the later Ultima versions I give a nod to the ST.

(Especially the disk swapping)

Did Gauntlet 2 appear on the 8bit? I thought the ST version of the original Gauntlet

was just as good if not better.

Some titles for sure just didn't translate well. The first time I played the ST versions

of Star Raiders and Alternate Reality I thought, seriously? :(

No Gauntlet II on A8 (though it did appear on the C64 ) only Gauntlet and The Deeper Dungeons.

U.S Gold firmly behind the ST by time of Gauntlet II.

I think the translation problems when bringing certain A8 games to the ST was in part due to different teams from the original game being given the conversion itself.

They might of been told to make minimal improvements, might of wanted to make their mark on the game by adding changes which were not always for the better or they simply might of been told just port it, but do not going wasting too much time or resources on it.

Some of the coin-op conversions were rather long in the tooth by time they arrived..

Joust had appeared on home micro's here in the UK in '83, Battlezone was 8 years old by the time we saw it.

Did you buy Asteriods Deluxe? or wait a while longer for the ST version of Blasteriods which had been annouced.

I had never heard of Andromeda Software or Rugby Circle Inc..but apparently these were the ones handed the likes of Crystal Castles, Battlezone and Joust.
