Doesn't sound like you'll be seeing a sequel on Playstation 5 anytime soon...

Oh hell yeah! I am totally OK with that. I've been craving a 60fps Bloodborne for years now. If it comes to PC, then it's a day-one purchase for me.

I haven't played Demon's Souls yet.   If I can ever find a PS5 in stock...

So I did get a PS5 and finished Demon Souls, so here is my mini-review

First it seems like it's the shortest of all the From Soulsbourne games by far but at $70 it is also the most expensive.

The game is very pretty and shows off the PS5 capabilities well.   One thing that struck me was how relatively normal the Demon's Souls world is compared to all the horrors lurking in every corner of Dark Souls or Bloodborne.  I mean there is a fair share of gruesome creatures, but it doesn't seem as much as the other games have.   You might find yourself fighting more normal fantasy stuff like dragons and human knights (as opposed to undead ones) and less  biological horrors like "The Bed of Chaos" or "The One Reborn",  but you will still have some of that.   So it definitely has a different feel than the other Souls games, but that's not a bad thing.

The progression path is very weird.   In most Souls games when you find a bonfire equivalent, you will have an obvious path (or two) that are unexplored and you will have a good idea of where to go next.   Here there are several unique worlds that are not interconnected at all, you have to teleport from one to the next.   But you can't just explore the first world to the end,  after the second boss, it will force you to visit another world first.   The "recommend" path will have you jumping between worlds without obvious reason to do so.

Some of the game mechanics are more like Bloodborne than Dark Souls.  Archstones (the bonfire equivalent) are one per area and not as frequent as the Dark Souls games, so it can be quite the slog to get to the next one, and like Bloodborne, healing items are consumables that you will need to grind for or purchase, and not refilled like the Estus Flasks of Dark Souls.

Also the boss fights are a cakewalk in this game compared to the others.   Even the hardest ones have a cheese method.   And this might be part of why the game feels short because you aren't spending a lot of time trying to take bosses down.

If you'd like to get into the Souls games but worry about the difficulty,  I think this game is the place to start.   It's easier than the others overall, but you still might struggle in areas.   It does feature the summoning system of other games so you can get someone to help you if you get stuck.

Overall, I enjoyed it.   My biggest gripe is the price.  It's priced like a new game, not a remaster.   The Dark Souls Remaster launched at $40, almost half the price, and it is a much longer game.

Dark Souls "Remastered" wasn't much of a remaster. I remember all the complaints when that one came out, especially from PC players that already had a 60fps experience after community updates. Demon's Souls on the other hand has been rebuilt from the ground up--it's not a simple "remaster", so I think the price is justified. This documentary NoClip put out recently sort of puts it into perspective. Blue Point went all-in on this and it shows, in my opinion.

$70 is definitely a sticking point, but honestly for me it would be a non-issue as this series has ridiculous amounts of replay value. You get your dollar's worth. Start messing with other character classes and experimenting with World Tendency, not to mention playing online, and the value becomes more apparent.

Side note, the game has dropped in price, as have a lot of PS5 games. Wal-Mart in particular has a bunch of PS5 games for $50 a pop now, some even $40. I wonder if this $70 thing is going to stick, or if it's going to become more of an "early adopter" price point.

Blue Point DO put an awful lot of work into their remasters and aren't fobbing console owners off with the PC version, now moved to console and industry trait which was a sticking point for myself some years ago with this HD Collections etc.

I was so hoping Sony would of hit the ground running with a Demon's Souls sequel or a new, flagship game in a manner they did with Bloodborne on PS4.

Demon's sold me the Playstation 3

Bloidborne the Playstation 4

And we are now at the stage where the likes of Sekiro and Elden Ring are multi-platform titles, the former not being my thing at all, Nioh has filled that gap, the latter looking not that impressive...

Plus Microsoft have bought Bethesda, so bye bye Fallout and Elder Scrolls titles on Playstation...

Sony really need something of their own more than ever in this field.

The Kings Field series could present a possible opportunity?

A friend recently convinced me to try a Monster Hunter game, only dabbled with it on PSP before, friend gave me a game for my birthday, found it so clunky, hated it.

Took the plunge and picked up Monster Hunter World Iceborne, feared the worse, but loving it.

Heady Mish-Mash of everything from Soulsborne, Skies Of Arcadia, Shadow Of The Colossus.

I've tried going the remaster route before..

Couldn't for the life of me get into Shadow Of The Colossus (camera issues, jumping mechanics etc) any of the Jak And Daxter Games nor Forbidden Siren on Playstation 2,picked them up in their PS3 incarnations.

Ended up loving Siren, appreciating Shadow more, but the stupid jumping mechanics still killed it for me, gave up on the second beast...

As a seasoned gamer, I now want to try newer experiences on existing, let alone newer platforms.

Last set of Remasters i enjoyed were the Bioshock ones, hated Resident Evil 2.

It will be interesting to see how this current approach by Sony plays out in the long term.

True DS1 wasn't a huge remaster, and graphically doesn't look like a proper PS4 game.   But it has a lot more meat..    If Bluepoint gave Bloodbourne  the Demon Soul's treatment, that would easily be worth $70,  but Demon Souls feels like the shortest game in the series and that's why it's hard to accept that it has the highest price.

Even last gen,  the $60 initial price didn't hold,  the games would soon go on sale and eventually receive permanent price drops, so yeah you are paying extra to be early.

Elden Ring was present at Gamescom and finally some real footage and info has emerged. I have only briefly skimmed that vid - hate any kind of spoilers when it comes to games so important to me. But my previous worries about this game seem to have been unfounded. It looks like a true From/DS game and that's all I really need to know. The inimitable style and mood of the DS series are there. It's also been said that G.R.R Martin hasn't actually written any in-game text, which I think is great. I absolutely love their minimalistic and surreal way of storytelling, and was worried that they could try and turn it into some boring epic fantasy, with lots of trite A-B-C dialogue and other WRPG narrative tropes.

I've never thought this series might benefit from going open-world, even though I'm a great fan of this kind of games. I'd be as happy if ER wasn't, but they went and did it, and the opinions are positive (saw Breath Of The Wild headline comparison somewhere), so okay, why not - it'll be interesting to see how it all works.

If they can deliver on all the fronts which made their previous games great, it'll be a true AAA blockbuster, in an otherwise really boring year in this regard (which is one of the reasons I got rid of my high-end PC recently. But it'll be something to look forward to when I build another one,  around the time Starfield drops.)

A friend offered to loan me his PS5 and so I checked out Demon's Souls for that. Rolled through it over a couple of days and finished it last night. It's a pretty great remaster. 60fps, beautiful visuals, some nice quality of life improvements (fast loading!), and it's extremely faithful overall. That said, despite the amazing job Bluepoint did with this, at the end of the day it's still just Demon's Souls. That can be a good or a bad thing depending on how much a fan you were of the original.

I wasn’t really in the mood to play through Demons’ Souls again at the moment, but I picked it up on the cheap recently so I could have it when the mood strikes.   Had a bit of a lull lately, not really thinking of anything I wanted to play, so I figured I’d give it a look to see what’s changed.  Just a few mins, of course.

I’m about 18 hours in now.  ?

So far, it looks great, feels super smooth, but it seems a bit empty along the multiplayer side of things, which is a big bummer.  In my 18 hours, I’ve only been invaded once, was only able to summon co-op twice, and have never been summoned to help anyone else (yep, I’ve tried a lot)

Demon's was the only one I never got very far in - I came to it after 1, 2, 1 Remastered, and 2 SotFS, so I think I was a bit tired of the formula at that point.

I've got it sat here looking at me but I can't start it yet - this is definitely a winter, dark night type game for me.

Bounced off Sekiro hard though, didn't get on with that in the slightest. To me, it removed everything that made the Souls games great in favour of aping Ninja Gaiden. Not my bag at all.

I had a similar journey with the Souls games, playing Demon's Souls last. Playing the PS3 version, especially after 60fps Dark Souls Remastererd and DS2: SotFS (Xbox One, PS4), was a tough pill to swallow. I eventually warmed up to it, but I can understand it not "clicking" after experiencing the other Souls titles first.

The PS5 version fixes all the performance issues and looks stunning in the process. There are still some things that haven't held up well (like checkpoints being few and far between), but for the most part they knocked it out of the park with the PS5 one. Much easier to get into and appreciate, in my opinion.

Still speculation at this point.

If there is to ge a Bloodborne sequel, personally i would rather From Software handle it, let Bluepoint take care of PS5 and PC versions of the original.

Does Bluepoint even have a track record of making original games?   They are the best at remasters/remakes no doubt-  but that's technical skills working with existing source material.   Having the creative chops to design your own game story and make it compelling is a completely different skill set.   Giving them a go at a masterpiece like Bloodborne seems like a big gamble.    Sony's Japan Studio would seem like a better choice (if From isn't available) since they did a lot of work on Bloodborne/Old Hunters,  but unfortunately Sony disbanded them.

Remasters/Remakes are all i know them for and it's something they are specialists in,but as you say, it's a completely different field, remastering the work of others, compared to building a game of your own, from scratch.

Nobody does game lore quite like From Software.

I can remember when i first played Halo 4 on the 360,  the first Halo game without Bungie.

343 had pushed the hardware to the limits, but it didn't have that feel the Bungie Halo games had and it literally killed my interest in the Halo franchise stone dead.

I'd hate to have a similar experience with Bloodborne, as the gane had such an impact on my gaming life.

Sony have disbanded so many talented studios over the years and it's been yet another reason the Playstation brand has lost it's appeal for me.

When you kill off the very teams who made the very games that made owning a Playstation so special, your killing my belief the future Playstation platforms will be able to offer up such titles.

Joint venture maybe? I'd certainly be up for letting Bluepoint take care of the technical side of things.

From the Bad:

Open world exploration is largely bland

I can see this.   The worlds of Souls and Bloodborne are relatively small (compared to an open world game)  but intricately detailed.   I think it's going to be hard to maintain that level of detail and atmosphere in a large open world

Elden Ring feels like Dark Souls 4 in all but name

But I don't see this as a bad thing ?

I played through some of Demon Souls on the PS3 a few years ago. I honestly was annoyed by the 30fps and thought the game was a bit clunky. After having watched the recent footage of the remake on the PS5, it’s my main reason to buy one. I’m hoping to add a PS5 to my collection in 2022 or 2023. I’m in no hurry, I’ll wait until the chip shortage ends.

LoopWatched an early access preview playthrough of Elden Ring last night and felt it really does look so familiar, it might as well be called Dark Souls 4.

A lot of people were raising concerns it appeared far too easy, foes being despatched with ease, bosses being dealt with rapidly, but others reassuring them, this was part n parcel of the early access, From made it easy for players and press to explore, it will be addressed come the final game ?

Sekiro difficultly literally killed it for myself early on and I hit a similar wall with Nioh II, but i would be looking for more of a challenge than what I saw on offer here.

Some raises concerns for performance on last gen systems, as frame drops and pop-in noticed and it was the PS5  version running.

But the question I most noticed was, where is the evidence of George RR Martin's work?

The dialouge, lore fragments etc shown seemed standard From work.

Picked up Sekiro on Steam, and not liking it at all yet.  I'm about 5 hours, in, don't mind the difficulty (but it seems so unbalanced its bewildering) and not sure if its going to click with me.  I hope it does, but so far its a stinker.

I would have gotten a refund already, but Steam has that "2 hour" policy and it took over half of that to troubleshoot and get the damn thing working properly.

Had numerous attempts to get it to click for myself, all failed.

The one From title I deeply regret purchasing ?
