Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Ian is absolutely unhinged. Man, seeing this again. He has a clear vendetta against Tommy and against this console.

I really just want to say, chill. Are you okay? What is wrong? It's a video game console. Is Atari paying CUPodcast or something? Is someone telling them to just completely trash Tommy and the Amico or anyone who talks about it like Rich? I don't get it. I seriously don't get it. Where does this kind of anger come from? How is this absolute anger over something like a game console be justified? From ANY developer or any console manufacturer? It's a game console. Where in the world does this deep anger come from?

These two D-bags remind me of spoiled children who act out when they don't get what they want. When they were younger, they were probably the type of kids who screamed at mom in the toy store because mom wouldn't buy them the toy they wanted. Causing a big scene at the store and creating an embarrassing situation.

Heres my experience with Patty and Igor

Wow.  It's been a while since I've looked at a CUPodcast video, but in this one, Ian almost made me flinch.  (And yes, I went back to the original video in case it was selectively edited, and his "rant" doesn't look any better when viewed in full and in context.)  Back when I regularly followed the CUPodcast, Ian could get pretty animated when railing about the likes of Mike Kennedy and the Coleco Chameleon, but he usually made sense and still managed to be entertaining while doing it.  This was something very different: it had a sullen, raw, angry quality that wasn't there before, and it was truly uncomfortable to look at.  What has happened to these guys?

It's funny, considering their obsession with and shilling/White Knighting for Nintendo.

I've found myself asking the very same questions about the people I've had to block from these threads.  Now, I'm as human as anyone else, and there are times when I've let certain things in life bother me more than they should have.  But I can honestly say that I've never let myself stew in my own sour juices about them until I'm spitting with rage.  I can only hope that if that ever happens to me, I would still have the presence of mind to stop myself and question the choices I've made that got me to that point—because they would have been my choices, no matter how much I might try to blame somebody else for "setting me off" with something they may have said or done.  I certainly hope that I'd do so before (for example) sitting down to record a podcast where the whole world can see me in that state ... or before going completely crazy on discussion forums, as a few people here have done for reasons I'm still not sure I fully understand.

he's a man playing a role to pay the bills. But play the role long enough... eventually the role consumes the man, and only the role remains.

because back then his anger was justified because the chameleon was a scam. But now he's applying a previous formula for success in order to solve what appears to be a similar equation. But the problem is that the variables have changed, and the formula no longer works; which means the problem cannot be solved, and it's driving him mad in a fog of frustration, confusion, and anger. like... why won't this thing just die already!

Every fan gets defensive about what they love; that's basically the definition of fan.

Like I said before, everyone needs to confort their choices. Saying he won't buy the Switch because Wii U was discontinued is just an excuse he needs, and quite a debatable one since Switch is a lot more successful than Wii U. I also doubt 80% of the games won't be playable in the future, but whatever... Nobody's forcing him to buy a Switch anyway.

I'm sorry, but getting defensive over a gaming system (or a sports team) makes you a child.  Modern society has just (d)evolved to the point where it's acceptable to be a 40 year old manchild ranting about a gaming console or a sports team.  Acceptable and good are not the same.  Not even close, in this case.

Every single view people give these videos is a slap in the face to the people trying very hard to make real, good things.  The critic is inferior to the maker, and this inferiority is the basis of bias when the forum has no professional standard.  The internet 'forum' has no standards.  The average youtube viewer is rarely perceptive enough to pick the professionals from the blowhards, to them Tommy and this loser are 'on the level' professionally because they are both right there, on the internet.  It's an unsustainable model.  It's too hard to be the maker and too easy to be the critic.

When you click on these videos, you validate that model and make it acceptable, and the 'adults'-the people making things-are forced to deal with the consequences. Sure, you made an awesome comment, a real zinger!  So what?  Your snarky words buried in the comment section under the video don't matter, but the fact that you visited the page does. It keeps the ad money coming in and the video up on youtube.  You just helped someone who is making Tommy's life difficult.  This makes sense how, exactly?

Stop being part of the problem.  Stop watching.

I was not talking of any video, I was talking about two forum posts mentioned by Swami. Actually I almost never watch gaming videos, so I don't understand why you're being agressive like this. 😕

Besides, I never said being defensive over a gaming system was not childish, I'm just reminding it's very common unfortunately. Swami said countless times that some Switch fans are really agressive, which I never denied. I just don't understand the point he's trying to make... Would you claim nobody here is defensive over Amico?

And you know what?

Like I said before, I'm mostly here as a 'journalist', trying to get the best information about Amico because big web sites are clearly misinformed - especially here in France. So I think from now on, I'll just read this thread and don't post anymore. Most of my posts were well received, but I'm getting really tired of the atmosphere here that you mostly describe as "positivity" - I don't. Since this topic was started, maybe a dozen AA members lost their interest for Amico partly because of the attitude of a minority of agressive fans (one of them was even banned by jaybird from the independent topic by the way). I'm aware it doesn't really make sense, because its fans don't make Amico better or worse, and Amico probably won't need those 'haters' to succeed, fortunately. But still, it's ironic some of you complain about enemies you helped creating.

I'll probably buy an Amico and review it for my web site, but I'm just waiting for a European model I can actually use. I may not be the target demographic (I love couch coop but don't have many people to play with alas), but I still like the concept - I even entertained the idea to create games for Amico... However, for video games, movies, and everything else, I always try to lower my expectations because I prefer to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. And I really hope none of you, even the ones that seem overly excited sometimes, will be disappointed.

Goodbye.

I can't think of any reason, aside from a possible link to the components causing cancer or backdoor access to defraud bank accounts, that anyone could be justified getting angry over a game machine, vaporware or not.

People are dying of a virus, losing their jobs, and amazingly most are just now discovering that the 80 year old American system of tying health insurance to employment, while the economy enters into a Great Depression, isn't such a good idea in a pandemic (or ever). Getting angry over a game machine isn't ever justified, just self entitled.

I remember back in the late 80's when a mostly comedic actor was picked for a certain movie about a dude with a black cape and a cool car. EVERYONE complained about the casting. Until they saw the movie. Then he became that Character. Others have worn the suit. But only a few could, arguably, be that  character as well as he was. Same with his arch rival. A few people have tried.. Some worked well. One not so good.  A while later, a certain former teen actor that had a checkered past was picked for a main role in a set of marvel-ous movies.  (sorry about that). 20+ movies later you cannot think of anyone else wearing his outfit.

What I'm saying is that don't knock it until you try it. If you had the opportunity to see something prior to everyone else and give a passionate, informed, even negative opinion on a product. DO IT. Negative opinions are crucial in making a product better. Being negative, just to be negative, ruins credibility for you.

If the final product sucks.. If the controller is uncomfortable to use.. If the games aren't fun. We'll be the first to tell when we get our pre-orders. Or return it after we get. I very much doubt that it will be the case, but it could happen.

110% agreed.

Sitting at home spewing such deep fury at a family game system is not justified for any reason. Ian is acting like Tommy and the Amico strangled someone. That's the kind of outrage he's presenting. In reality it's a guy trying to sell a new game console. That's it. That's all that's happening.

This isn't a medical device that is trying to cure cancer and cures nothing. This isn't a car that has some reclall that caused accidents. It's a game system. A non-essential device that anyone can buy or ignore. You have to go out of your way to seek out Intellivision and the Amico and then go even further to make videos complaining.

This is definitely them trying to relive their Chameleon days and those days are over.

Has gaming always has such as toxic fandom?  Making me a bit embarrassed, for some reason.

And what exactly are the "hard questions," that people keep going on about?  Some of those videos say "you didn't ask the hard questions."  Tommy has said that he doesn't back down from "the hard questions."   This isn't exactly a life-or-death, all important device, far as I can tell.  What are some examples of "the hard questions" surrounding the release of a toy?

You guys nailed it from two different perspectives.  The problem with people who put out videos or make posts for the purpose of bashing a video game system before it has even hit the market is they are driven/blinded by their own immature/selfish attitudes.  I wonder if it's fear of their favorite system being overtaken in popularity by some unknown system that has yet to prove itself?  I really don't know!  It boggles my mind at how these people feel justified in acting the way that they do.  I was watching an episode of Tiger King to see what all the fuss was about and I came away from watching a show thinking there's 45 minutes of my life I'll never get back and there are some really messed up people in this world (kind of like those who go out of their way to bad mouth a simple video game system)!

Ah, I remember the simpler times when flame wars were just random faceless internet people yelling at each other via USENET posts.  Now the random internet people post videos of themselves complaining about each other.

I always wondered what the “hard questions” were as well ! Makes me laugh 😂 it’s not like it’s hard hitting news and so serious. Some people are acting as if this is a life or death situation where the “hard questions” must be asked. People hiding behind their computers are getting stranger by the day !!

I don't understand it either. People are treating this like there are 1,000 unknowns or super important, critically vital questions that are not being asked.

The "dozen AA" members you describe are trolls who post regularly on Pat and Ian's videos and then came here to try to poke at Tommy and poke at the Amico concept for no reason other than to get a reaction. 90% of the images people were posting of yawning animals and bacon was so they could giggle amongst themselves. And if you raised any criticism at their posting, you would get called out with something along the lines of...

"I've been here way longer than you! I've been here since before Amico existed!" Totally ignoring that Tommy and the Amico have driven site traffic recently so obviously and of course there will be new posters.

No - the truth of the answer is that when someone comes in to this thread acting "concerned" ... and then ends up posting on Pat and Ian's videos to talk shit offsite where they think it can't be seen, and they get called out on it, that's just being two-faced and purposely deceptive.

We did not create enemies. No one asked these people to post here, then to talk shit on Pat and Ian's videos, or to post here, call us trolls and haters for making Pat and Ian meme pictures, and then come back days later complaining - again - about the Amico's price.

None of this is helpful and of course it's not going to get positive reactions from the majority of Amico regulars.

"Isn't it true that you decided to make a new Intellivision because you went to a party in 1997 in blackface?"

"Were you involved in the Ivan Boeski fraud scandal and are using that money to fund The Amico?"

"You tweeted, 'Let them stew' last year. Was that in reference to people dying of heat exhaustion during England's unusually hot summer?"

I mean, even Rich in that video says "I have concerns", like it's some kind of existential warning that needs to be addressed. 🙄 I have "concerns" that my boyfriend is going to cheat on me, not that I have to adapt my hands to use a new game controller on a platformer.🤔

I did think it was funny that Pat said they uncovered the Chameleon scandal, when it was actually AtariAge members who uncovered it. They were just the first or biggest to vlog about it.

I can tell you some of these questions right away:

- Why are you doing this if Nintendo already exists?

- Why don't you stop working on this and send all design documents to Shigeru Miyamoto?

- How do you pronounce Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoro?
