Would a 3-channel .MOD converter be possible?

Recommended Posts

Looking at this video:

, do you think it would be possible to make a program that could convert a .MOD file to a .xex, which would have a player, and everything else related to playing back the mod file? I mean, I'm sure that it would take too much CPU time for any practical use, but still. Now, it might be difficult to use a regular mod file, because, if I'm not mistaken, .MOD files don't support 4-bit samples. Maybe you can make the converter convert the samples to 4-bit sample. Thoughts?

Indeed such a beast already exists :)

I found this thread: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/264125-best-mod-player/

I remember the 5.1Khz one from the 90's, and converting MODs to MD8's (downsampling 8 bit samples to 4 bit) also made them 1/2 the size, but underwhelmed by the audio quality, and they maybe had to fit within 64K?... But I see there's some others in that thread I haven't heard about before.

If the music was intended for use in a game, 1 channel free could be used for game sound effects.

Or maybe it originated as SID music from C64...

Or frees up some cpu cycles to get a higher sample rate on 3 channels.

What Nezgar says, plus it looks like he used the full range of 0-15 per channel. A fourth channel would definitely "overload" and distort.
