spinnaker15136 #1 Posted April 7, 2019 I am looking at refurbing my Atari 800. I know before I put it on the shelf 30+ years ago, I was having issues with the 810 drive. Other than cleaning the head, are there any tips on refurbing the drive that someone can point me to?
+DrVenkman #2 Posted April 7, 2019 Well, there are the Atari Field Service Manuals: Rev 1 http://www.atarimania.com/documents/Atari_810_Disk_Drive_Field_Service_Manual_Rev_1.pdf Rev 2 http://www.atarimania.com/documents/Atari_810_Disk_Drive_Service_Manual_Rev_2.pdf There's also an 810 Diagnostic Cart but you'd need a flash cart to use the ROM: http://www.atarimania.com/utility-atari-400-800-xl-xe-810-diagnostic-cartridge_16408.html

But I have bigger issues. The 800 itself is not working. I think I might post another thread but will aslos have a look at the manuals.]
+Nezgar #4 Posted April 7, 2019 Theres a few different revisions of the 810. Easiest starting point would be to post some pictures of the front and insides. ie, Very early 810's (79-81) had hardware issues, like a poorly designed power board, no data separator, etc that were usually replaced/upgraded because its pretty much guaranteed to be dead by now otherwise. Of interest may also be the ROM revision on the side board. There's three known 810 stock Atari ROMs, and other 3rd party possibilities that could be in there such as archiver and Happy. The mechanism will be MPI (garage door lift style) for earlier drives, Tandon for later (narrower flip door) After Nov 82.
