Does Pi really refer to 3.14159... or something else in this context? I am well aware of the Raspberry Pi but thought it was a registered trademark or model name in itself and that nobody else would sell other types of Pi computers, unless of course they made an agreement of some sort. I kind of have heard of Banana Pi too though I don't know about its manufacturer, just that it looked like a somewhat more beefed up knock-off.

Yes, there is that book/movie Life of Pi which is about a boy alone on a boat with a huge tiger so perhaps there is more to it than the numeric constant with an infinite number of decimals.

The Pi is a nod to the older computer companies that named themselves after fruit (acorn, apricot systems etc), particularly in Britain. Also, the board was designed at the outset to be programmed in Python... hence the Pi.
