Incredible Atari 8 Bit Library Find

My friend has found an incredible treasure of 8 bit disks from the old Atari 8 Bit libray from our club in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, in it are some disks from KWEST, some disks from TAF, and they were all stred inside an Indus GT case so they are in extremely good condition, don't yet know if they are readable. If some kind soul near by can send me a 5.25 inch drive for my old PC , (maybe my friend Don has one , but with my Windows 98 machine and a 5.25 inch drive I can back them all up with Omniflop and get them out in the community. Pleas if somene has an old 5.25 inch drive tat they are not using PM me and let me know if you want to part with it. Thank from the bottom of my heart, Russ Campbell

omniflop is not going to cut it.... only a limited support for the simplest Atari 8 bit 90k format... you have a whole boatload of issues with controllers and drives going this route... almost all users groups I've had the pleasure of visiting or being a member of offered double density and enhanced density disks, and happy drive copies of certain other software :)

You will get further with other solutions

APE, PRO system, Vapi DLL, Respeqt, make atr, atr util, Altirra, Kryoflux, Supercard Pro (SCP)... are just a few.... many more exist.

I think this : https://www.kryoflux.com/

Is the key piece in the ultimate ability to preserve old floppy's...it's a magnetic flux recorder so it preserves everything period no matter the format or protections. You might want to contact the Atari Disk Preservation group here on AA, I know they take bulk media for preservation: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/234684-atari-8-bit-software-preservation-initiative/page-1?hl=+disk%20+preservation

Hmmm,

TAF mainly produced PD disks, think KWEST too. So, there is not really a need to buy a Kryoflux for copy protected disks, when none of the disks are protexted. A SIO2PC or SIO2PC (USB) or something similar should be more than enough...

For disks with read errors the Kryoflux dump might give the little additional information one needs to recover lost data.

We were also discussing this in the A8preservation thread, where rcamp48 posted the same message. It looks like these are PD libraries.

I was not talking about protection but bit-rot.

Having a flux dump we will reliably receive any possible data for gone-bad sectors including i.e. their expected CRC or gone-weak bytes.

Using this information I would expect to be able to at least recover single-byte errors.

I know @DjayBee ;)

I only posted my comment to refer people to the a8preservation topic here on AtariAge, as in this topic people are already offering their services to make kryoflux dumps ;)

I saw that Russ posted his message on several atari forums, so I am hoping that "we" get the chance to dump these disks :)

You will , I have had no luck dumping one disk and thats all I will try , I do have a 5.25 inch floppy drive , got it hooked up right, but my machine is on DOS 6.22 , I will send the disks all to my friend in Oakville, only an hour away.... I will continue to try to read just that one disk as it has a write protect on it, it may be empty as I have seen no label on it...

DOS 6.22?!?!?! That's Microsoft DOS for IBM-compatible computers. You need an Atari DOS on an Atari 8-bit computers.

OK I am dumping some of the disks as we speak, ANADISK for DOS is working great, I will have them dumped in no time and the newest version allows me to dump accurately each side seperately. Anything I have great troubles with I will forward to James. One question: How many cylinders per side? I have been using 40

These 2 disks: KWEST88A and TAF113 are not working, Altirra states "corrupt or unsupported format"

The other 2 disks: KWEST89 and KWEST90 are loading just a few sectors, but don't do anyhting. According to (Atari) Dos 2.5 there is no disk directory.

Sorry, I don't have enough knowledge about the PC software to help you :(

Edit: I tested the files of the Dumps 05-26-2019.zip

anadisk requires a specific and few floppy drive controllers to work properly... make sure all your disks have protection notch covered.

the resulting files can be copied back out to disks again by using anadisk to create them... but again, you need the appropriate floppy controller and suitable lower density disk drive. The resulting disk will only be Atari disk drive readable if all conditions are met.

anadisk does not understand the wide and varied formats of the many Atari floppy structures.

Be extremely careful as Anadisk does not look at the disk to prevent accidental copy over during operations as some copiers/duplicators do.

Hmmm,

wasn't it...

a) ANA A8 Disk => IMG file (convert Atari disk into IMG file)

and b) DEANA IMG file => A8 Disk (convert IMG back to A8 disk) ?!?

Not sure if ANA adds some header or something similar (or if it saves the pure data as uncompressed image, like XFD does)...

ANA and DEANA both work under DOS on the PC (16Bit only pgms., unsure if DOSbox will work) and do require a floppy drive (+FDC) capable of FM. I still have a PC running with DOS, but my Teac drives are both HD and the FDC does not do FM (only MFM). Guess it will not be easy to find someone who a) still has a DOS PC b) uses DEANA and c) owns a floppy drive and FDC capable of writing FM...

If the IMG file would be the same as XFD, this would be okay, but as it looks, it uses some specific format. Better upload the disks as XFD or ATR images, this requires some extra hardware, but afaik is quite cheap to DIY... or give the disks to someone who owns SIO2PC or something similar...

EDIT: All images have a length of approx. 97,xxx Bytes and are therefore approx. 5kbytes longer than they should be (quite a large header that ANA adds to the 90k disk)...?!? No clue how to repair / fix those images to standard ATR size of 90KB (92,176 Bytes ATR / 92,160 Bytes XFD)...

Is this more helpful? I used the HXC floppy emulator to convert all raw images to Kyroflux Raw files , I will post a zip file with 6 or 7 dumps.... I know a little bit about the PC and what it is capable of so this is what I got and I have a compatable 5.25 inch drive , with ANadisk it will read , write and format Atari disks, even make new ones, I do have a few blank 5.25 low density disks I will copy a few of the more important disks..... mind you I am getting missing sectors and changing Interleave sizes on most disks , they are really old. I don't think I am doing them any harm by reading them, Don took the drive out of a working machine and loaned it to me , so I know that the heads are clean. Again all files are in Kyroflux raw format, individual tracks for each disk. Oh I was readig from head 0 to head 40 , should I be reading from head 0 to head 39 on all of the disks? Russ
