7800 Labels, part numbers, etc. (idea from the 2600 'Galaga' thread)

Hi guys:

I was reading the 2600 Galaga thread, and I picked up on some conversation about the design of labels, part numbers, etc. and if they should reflect the original (Atari's) style or not.

I was surprised to find that some of the more active and long time members (and mods) ;) actually didn't care for using the 'retail' style labels. Personally, I felt that I kind of went 'in-between' as I liked the placement of the system name, and the name of the game, but decided to use the entire label for the artwork. I've kept that pretty much my 'standard' which, IMHO, is a nod to the original era of the system, but takes a bit of a new direction.

It's almost like a 'what if this game was released during the retail life of the system' kind of thing.

One thing that I also noticed, was the model numbers. Al gave (again IMHO) an excellent example of a standard: 'AA-26-001' which, if Al doesn't mind, I will start using on my games from this point forward (AA-78-800 and forward). I started with 800 to not presume that I would get the first numbers for any reason. Also, I know the 'AA' is for AtariAge, but any and all of my games are always Al's to sell as long as he wants to.

I'm also going to go back and re-number my past releases this way:

  • AA-78-800 - Pac-Man Collection (2006)
  • AA-78-801 - Asteroids Deluxe (2007)
  • AA-78-802 - Space Duel (2007)
  • AA-78-803 - Space Invaders (2008)
  • AA-78-804 - Super Pac-Man (2008)
  • AA-78-805 - Crazy Otto (2010)
  • AA-78-806 - Failsafe (2010)
  • AA-78-807 - Moon Cresta (2011)
  • AA-78-808 - Meteor Shower (2012)
  • AA-78-809 - Scramble (2012)
  • AA-78-810 - RipOff (2012)
  • AA-78-811 - Jr. Pac-Man (2012)
  • AA-78-812 - Armor Attack II (2013)
  • AA-78-813 - Frenzy (2013)
  • AA-78-814 - Astro Blaster (2014)
  • AA-78-815 - KC Munchkin (2014)
  • AA-78-816 - Astro Fighter (2015)
  • AA-78-817 - Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest (2015)
  • AA-78-818 - Crazy Brix (2016)
  • AA-78-819 - Super Circus AtariAge (2017)
  • AA-78-820 - Baby Pac-Man (2019)
  • AA-78-821 - ReZolve
  • AA-78-822 - Adventure III: The Quest For The Chalise
  • AA-78-823 - Defender

So, my question is, am I overstepping any bounds, here? Or being presumptuous? Does anyone see a problem with doing this from this point forward?

If any one can presume to add their work as semi official canon in the 7800 library by doing serial numbers, it is you Bob. I think this is a very neat idea.

That looks reasonable to me, although I would like to give it a bit more thought than I did in the other thread. I need a scheme that works with releases across systems and would support a sufficient number of titles per platform. AA == AtariAge obviously, 26, 52, 78, JG, LX for 2600, 5200, 7800, Jaguar, Lynx respectively. Not sure what to use for Atari 8-bit computers. Could use "A8". :) CV for ColecoVision, and obviously two characters can easily be assigned to any other systems down the road. And three digits should certainly be more than enough to uniquely identify each release for each system.

I'll have to think about how to assign values to existing homebrews since there have been quite a few released through the AtariAge Store over the years. Also need to consider what to do with hacks and reproductions.

HK for hack and RP for reproduction?

Thank guys

@Albert - thanks for replying, I like your ideas

@Shawn - good idea, Maybe even shorten it to 'H' and 'R', so there can still be 99 entries for each (keeping the '3 digit' scheme)

@Allan - I see what you did there...

@sramirez2008,DrVenkman - I remain hopeful...

@toiletunes - those were more of an experiment... They were never really truly released, as they were never finished to my liking. Same goes for Ms. Pac-Man Twin.

Not to derail the thread, but I play them regularly. Thank you for what you do. If they are ever finished, I would purchase. In particular, the 320 games feel like you're in the arcade playing a bootleg or conversion. It's really arcade quality, coming from a 7800 no less. Mind blowing.

I just completed 'reassigning' my label files to reflect the new numbers.

Excellent! I'll need new labels for the following... :-D

  • Asteroids Deluxe
  • Astro Blaster
  • Astro Fighter
  • Bently Bear Crystal Quest
  • Crazy Brix
  • Frenzy
  • Jr. Pac Man
  • Moon Cresta
  • Pac Man Collection
  • Scramble
  • Space Invaders
  • Super Circus AtariAge

BTW, I would love to see a 7800 version of Crazy Climber assuming it will support dual joysticks. This would add another game to the 7800 library that could benefit from the Edladdin Super Twin 78 controller.

+1 for dual-joy Crazy Climber. Robotron's lonely.

Would also work great for those of us with the A8 Robotron dual joystick tray and the newer style 3D printed holders for both the CX40 and CX24 sticks.

I should mention that Crazy Climber was not on Bob's actual list, but AA member Allan slipped it in. :-D Having said that, there is at least three of us who would want this game.
