How good is the 3d graphics capability of the ST?

Recommended Posts

There is nothing in ST, STE, TT, Falcon what specifically supports 3D graphics. But ST was pretty much good for 3D of that time because: powerful CPU, lot of RAM (of course all is relative, for it's time), display where each pixel could have own color - well from available palette. And we know: only 16 colors. But that was actually good for 3D - less colors, less video RAM, so faster draw on screen. And 16 colors were enough for that simple 3D.

Most known 3D games on ST: Starglider 1 and 2 - first is vector (line) 3D, second is polygon (filled with some color) type. Flight Simulator 2. Formula 1 GP. No Second Prize - probably fastest polygon 3D, at price of min 1 MB RAM.

ST could display even some not so good looking textured graphic, but at very low frame rate. Something about 100 MHz 32 bit CPU and more colors are needed for that.

"3D galax being the only known example" - Jesus ... where are you from ?

I suspect for a short while in the mid 80s it was probably the best consumer system you could buy for 3D graphics (without spending lots of money), though I'm sure some super PC of the time (fast 286 upwards) with some specialist cards could beat it easily, or some exotic custom hardware. I would also stick my neck out and say it is a trifle ahead of the Amiga on that front.

There are a shed load of 3D games on the ST, other notables (as well as Paranoid's list) include things like Falcon, Conqueror, Virus, Carrier Command, Battle Command, Thunderhawk, Elite and Frontier (as well as a shed load of other tank and plane simulators). There are also some excellent apps including Antic's 3D stuff and the 3D construction kit. The ST also has a very nice version of Wolfenstein if we include fake 3D.
