The switches determine which drive is effectively going to be drive A, drive B and drive C.  Make sure one of them is set to 0 and the other is set to 1 unless you're booting from an external drive.  There is another switch for that on the side of the computer.  If you are booting externally, then neither drive should be 0 and one of them has to be 2.
