Atari2600Lives #1 Posted June 26, 2003 I am going on a long vacation and decided to splurge $99 on a new LCD for the Gamecube so my kid can play anytime he wants if his mom or I are watching the tube where we're staying as well as give him something very cool to do during a long drive. I was surprised to find out that there are multiple makers of these LCD screens. I thought it was just one brand, Nintendo, and $129.00. They range in price from as low as $59 to around $129. I settled on the middle of the road $99 model. It snaps on in 2 seconds and just basically makes the Cube a bit bigger on top. There is a cable attached to the back of the LCD where you plug in the Cubes power supply and the same cable links itself to the Cube for video display. The screen looks pretty good if your looking dead on. It comes with a car lighter power source. Now the kids can be nice and quiet in the back seat or you can be playing while driving and about to cause an accident. The volume is good and the sound comes through fairly crisp and clear. It's a cool gadget. BTW I noticed the Playstation has one as well. (It actually improves the Playstation games as they seem higher res now!)
MegaManFan #2 Posted June 26, 2003 I have never understood how anybody could play a PS2/X-Box/Cube in a moving car. Even if the shocks were really good and the ride really stable and the unit itself never skipped during a game, I couldn't help but think something bad would happen to it eventually (really huge pothole sends it flying, somebody spills a drink on it, et cetera). Atari2600Lives #3 Posted June 26, 2003 If a kid is in a safety seat they ususally have like a clip on table that goes right in front of them (food tray). In Flroida, the roads are fairly smooth. The main reason is that we're renting a beach house that has one TV in the den. Now with this my kid has his own portable tv for the game Cube.
MegaManFan #4 Posted June 26, 2003 Yeah, I can see it being much more useful for that purpose. That's why I kick myself in the butt for having bought a PSOne for $100 right when they were new, because now for $50 more I could have had one as a bundle with a very nice LCD screen. The screen by itself costs $100 on it's own which is why I'm somewhat reluctant to get one.
Atari2600Lives #5 Posted June 26, 2003 I was impressed as hell with the PSone screen. WOW, it actually made the games look a lot higher res. It's a lot nicer than the game cube screen.
MegaManFan #6 Posted June 26, 2003 Now you're really depressing me. If they ever have a firesale and start letting those screens go for $50, I'm getting one. I saw a guy playing his PSOne on a plane trip once with it and was jealous all over.
heavy-sixer #7 Posted June 26, 2003 I debated whether or not to get an LCD screen for my GameCube and then (after reading some reviews for GC LCDs) I decided to get the PSONE LCD combo and I don't regret it. The screen is great and it does make the games look quite good. I was just playing it last night for a few hours and I don't regret getting it (especially since it was a gift -- but I did make it kind of clear as to what I wanted)! The only thing that is a let down on the PSONE combo is that you cannot link them. My friend and I wanted to do some head to head gaming using our own LCDs and it's not possible. Before I got it I kept waiting and hoping PSONEs would drop in price again. I don't know if they will. I wish they would so I could pick up an extra one on the cheap.
