Turbo Basic XL 1.5 on Atarimax 8 Mb cartridge?

For future reference, a CAR file is the ROM's binary image with a 16 byte header at the front which simply needs stripping off, e.g. with a command line tool, hex edit etc.

Within Altirra you can also use the menu "File / Save Firmware / Save Cartridge..." menu with the CAR loaded and in the resulting dialog changes the "Save as Type" to "Raw cartridge image (*.bin)".

That file can then be flashed via the Maxflash Cartridge Studio's flashing tool, e.g. either using "Tools / Convert BIN to ATR programming image" or direct using the USB cartridge via one of the "Cartridge / Program" options.

Thanks again, Mr Robot!

Trying to import the files to the Atarimax Workbook, the flash tool shows following error messages:

[User Interface] Error loading file "Turbo BASIC XL, v1.5 (1985)(Happy Computer) [64K].bin" for slot #1, Unable to identify file:

Turbo BASIC XL, v1.5 (1985)(Happy Computer) [64K].bin

Not a known or supported image.
[User Interface] Error loading file "Turbo BASIC XL+Compiler+Runtime+Linker  [64K].bin" for slot #1, Unable to identify file:

Turbo BASIC XL+Compiler+Runtime+Linker  [64K].bin

Not a known or supported image.
[User Interface] Error loading file "Turbo BASIC XL+Compiler+Runtime+Linker, v1.5  [64K].bin" for slot #1, Unable to identify file:

Turbo BASIC XL+Compiler+Runtime+Linker, v1.5  [64K].bin

Thank you, Wrathchild! Will try the Altirra method

Edit: stripping off the header within Altirra worked fine to get the bin file, which still brings up the same error message as above when trying to import the file to the workbook

Because that's exactly what I did (just not in Altirra)!

Maybe this will help

Edit: no matter what I try, the flash tool won't let me import any of the bin files to the workbook

You don't import them into a workbook as they are cartridge images for the full cartridge, so you'd use one of the menu options I've suggested instead.

I tried all menu options, no success. I don't know, what I'm doing wrong here

Just to be sure, I'm talking about the Maxflash Cartridge Studio as flash tool

Instead of importing the bin files I tried:

Menu > Tools > Convert Bin to ATR Programming Image > Maxflash 8mbit Flash Cartridge

...still won't work, because full 8 Mbit bin file expected.

If anyone has an ATR Programming Image of this one (for the Atarimax 8 Mbit cartridge):

    Name:     Turbo BASIC XL+Compiler+Runtime+Linker, v1.5  [64K].bin
    File:     256K Cart
Type:     Turbo BASIC XL+Compiler+Runtime+Linker, SIC! 256KB Cartridge
    CRC32:    File: 6b2d1ea4 / Data: 6b2d1ea4

...or of any of the other two versions, I would be very glad to get if, if possible

I still don't know, why the bin files won't be accepted by the Maxflash Cartridge Studio

That is one of the three files I gave you.

I don't have a maxflash cart, it seems pretty limited. Have you thought about getting an AVG cart or something?

Yeah, it's one of the three files you gave me, out of the three I like it most - thanks again!

Other cartridges than an Atarimax is no option - if it won't work on an Atarimax cartridge, ok, then I have to accept it

As those images are for a different bank switching model they won't work.

If a 128KB (1Mbit) AtariMax cart image could be produced then often repeating that 8 times to make an 1024KB (8Mbit) image will work.

Okay, I see. If anyone comes across any Turbo Basic XL 1.5 ATR Programming Image for Atarimax cartridges, then please call me.

Thanks all for replying

Have you even tried to use a regular Turbobasic executable in the Studio software.  I have one in an AtariMax 1mb cartridge ..

You could give Avery's Extended Basic a go instead?

Here's the 1Mbit image repeated into an 8Mbit one which you should be able to flash.

atxbasic8mb.zip 236.21 kB · 0 downloads

It has to be TB XL 1.5 (for nostalgic reasons) on Atarimax 8Mb cartridge, or nothing. Still, I thank you for your effort, Wrathchild! cheers

Hi Roy-

Presume you mean the 800 (Frost) Basic?  Afaik, no one has been successful putting TBXL in an Atarimax cart. It's been several years, but I couldn't get it to work.  I did get the Sparta version working with a small version of Mydos (3.07 IIRC).
