Good paint program for Atari 800XL

I've only used Atati Paint, but I think it only has 2 modes. I'm sure others will know of better ones.

You can't use an ST mouse, it just won't work on the A8.

However I think you can get a graphic tablet and use that to draw etc.

Despite what was stated, an ST mouse works very well when plugged into either one of the joystick ports. The problem is that there aren't an abundance of programs that recognize it, and unless someone knows of one, no paint programs do.

I am not an expert (I use Atari Graphics Studio on PC - and RECOIL to display Atari, Amiga... images) but there are many recent paint programs.

For example BBK Artist (mouse), Blazing Paddles, Lepix, Paint 256, RAMbrandt, XL ArtXL Paint Max (mouse).

Here you can find many programs:

http://atarionline.pl/v01/index.php?ct=utils&sub=2. Grafika

People more skilled than me will give you more infos.

Diamond Paint supports a mouse also, has all the features of Micro Illustrator and Atari Artist, but it requires Diamond GOS.

Many art programs support the Atari touch tablet or Koala touch tablet, including the art programs that come with them when bought complete, which are Atari Artist and Koala Paint, both are Micro Illustrator compatible (picture files). Rambrandt  is one of the best, supporting most of the Atari's hardware graphic modes, including the GTIA modes, and it is compatible with both touch tablets and Atari's track-ball in true track-ball mode, and is compatible with Micro-Illiustrator too, with certain graphic modes that will let you save in M.I. format. It's the best there is as far as features, and even has a separate Solid Object Modeler program.

But, if you are looking for art programs that use mixed hardware modes and other software modes that can have many more colors than similar resolution hardware modes and anywhere on the screen. There are a few, mostly free-ware/Public domain and very basic, but some do support mouse or touch tablets, or track-ball.

Rambramdt can't do that, but it can use DLI's for it's own graphics file format, which is great, but much more restricted in where the colors can be.

I personally prefer using the Atari touch-tablet over a mouse for graphic art, and if I'm using an Antic graphic mode, I usually start with Atari Artist, with it's nice graphic menu system that you click on icons. Then I save the picture and load it into Rambrandt to continue the work using the DLI options of the program to add more color and final touch-up. It has a click-able menu system too, but it's text on two lines at the bottom of the screen, and you have to switch menu screens 2 or 3 times to see all selectable options.

If I'm using a GTIA mode then I just start off with Rambrandt. And for advanced mixed and software graphic modes there is Paint 256, and Technicolor Dream for mixed GTIA modes, and for other software modes like HIP and TIP, etc., there are some primitive but decent art programs. I forget the names off-hand, but many only work with a joystick or track-ball in joystick mode. Escal Paint is one that uses three screens of Red, Green and Blue 16 shaded GTIA mode with a sort of "page-flipping" and interlacing tricks that lets you create 4096 colors from a palette of over 32,000.

@Philsan also mentioned some good one that use mouse or touch-tablets. I didn't realize BBK Artist was mouse compatible though...There are a lot of art programs I haven't even tried yet, and from the lists at those sites Philsan linked, it looks like plenty to choose from for all hardware, mixed and software modes. I'm like a kid in the candy store with this stuff, but I already probably have most of these downloaded and just haven't gotten around to trying them all yet.

Wow, thank you for all the detailed responses and programs to try, really appreciate it! My Sunday plans have been set :)

Gunstar, curious to try a touch tablet, any reason for Atari vs Koala? I've never used either one.

Maybe the addition of "S.A.M. Painter" (Gr.15 + DLI) makes sense - as this application supports the ST-mouse too:

Have not a download source at my fingertips, could somebody else can chime in...?

Atari tablet is better, larger surface area and higher-definition surface for better accuracy, button on pen and two on tablet which do three different things and Atari Artist is much better than the art programs that come with Koala, but of course they aren't the only programs for the tablets. Koala is o.k., it was my first and I used it for years, but I'd never go back after getting an Atari tablet.

Great, and Brad has it in stock, that helps!

Looks like BBK Artist does not use or support a mouse, it is joystick driven only. Manual and program available from the author here: BBK Artist.

Quote from that page: "The entire program is joystick operated, using as little keyboard input as possible. Just move the cursor over the option you want and press the button. What could be simpler?"

Is there a comment section so we can let him know that a touch tablet or mouse would be simpler? One thing I NEVER use, is an art program that is joystick only...that's why I was excited to hear BBK Artist used a mouse earlier, as I like it, except for the joystick control. Doing artwork with a joystick SUCKS.
