Laser Disk Player gift from heaven!

Recommended Posts

So I did my rounds at the Goodwill again today. Overall this place is simply amazing, even tho 98% of the time I leave the place with nothing.

I was strolling for Atari stuff (or anything classic), and I run across this:

VP-1000 LASER DISC PLAYER

Wow! This thing looked cool right away. But kinda scary too, since I don't have a freaking clue how to work the thing. All I know is that it is like my only ticket to being able to play Dragon's Lair like it was intended.

This could be the most retarded question in the world, but I'll ask it anyway :P

If I had the Dragon's Lair Laser Disc (which I don't), and my trusty Laser Disc Player, why the hell is there any need for Daphne?

Daphne says that it requires a Disc Player to function, so I just don't get wtf that's supposed to mean?!!? If someone already had a disc player and dragon's lair, why wouldn't they just play it already?

Besides I thought the point of an emulator was to do something WITHOUT hardware?! So wtf is Daphne for in that case too? The point is that I don't understand jack about this stuff, but I know that I WILL be playing Dragon's Lair because I'm determined.

Oh geez, I almost forgot:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...1&category=3317

I bought mine for a glorious price of $6.99.

The power light goes on, but I don't have a disk to test...but it opens too.

This puppy weighs like a trillion pounds (not even joking), so the shipping would probably be a billion googleplex dollars too. But I didn't have to pay any of that.

And the lady at the checkout goes "what's that?"

And I'm like: I'm not telling, and hands off!!!

No really I told her some junk about DL and pacman.

I got an old woodgrain LD player for $7 at Goodwill too. It doesn't open, it feeds like a car CD player. It powers up, but has no indication that it works without a disc. No black or blue screen. No menu or remote, either.

Hi there!

About the need of an emulator: the game Dragon´s Lair needs to react to the Inputs of the Player to the right time, which needs a CPU executing a program. Laserdisc Players have no such possibilities, like DVD Players, to execute complex programs like "If button x is pushed at time y, play video track z". So the original Dragons Lair game had the Laserdisc player, which was only there to play the video tracks, and a separate CPU board, which contained the real game, controlling the Laserdisc Player via a serial interface. And Daphne exactly emulates this CPU board. Without this, you could only watch the sequences on your Laserdisc Player in the order they were pressed on the disc.

Hope this helps you understanding :)

Yeah, after thinking about it longer, that's kinda what I thought.

Thanks for the explanation.

So I would assume that I need these things to make it work.

1. A serial cord

2. The dragon's lair laser disk

3. Daphne

Is that all I'd need, or do I need any other special programs.

I've been to the Daphne site, and I've read the faq about 1 billion times...but there never seems to be a clear cut list of what you need.

It is like having a tv with a cord, but no faq anywhere tells you where you might find something like an electrical outlet.

I read some other place about compatibility...

Mine appears to not be compatible...

It is a: VP-1000

Pioneer brand

I used to be a big fan of the LD format and I remember there used to be a company that sold Dragons Lair that run from a standard LD player and you just used the remote to play.

Might be worth tracking down and if your interested there was also the second game in the series also available.

I am not sure but I bet you can get something similar for DVD players now if you looked.

You can get Dragon's Lair on DVD... it plays fine using your remote control for the direction and sword controls. You need a DVD player of course, but you wouldn't need any goofy equipment to hook it up to anything.

The Dragon's Lair arcade machine was like any other arcade machine except that it read data off of a laser disk. Trying to play Dragon's Lair through a home LD player is akin to taking the hard drive from a Killer Instinct arcade machine and expecting to play it on your computer. Good luck getting it working through Daphne, but you'd probably be better off just looking for the DVD.

Not that I really personally care about exactness...but if I got Dragon's Lair on DVD (I assume they have it for PC compatibles so I can play it on my computer?) it would fall something sort of "emulation" right?

This sorta is my quest for the final piece of emulation that will compliment everything else I've got. But my technical knowledge just doesn't quite reach far enough, or perhaps all that is necessary is the right money and Ebay.

Playing Dragon's Lair on DVD...comparable to playing Namco Museum Pac-Man on Playstation

Playing Dragon's Lair through LD/Daphne...comparable to playing Mame Pac-Man

Or am I off with this comparison? And so you know, I LIKE Namco Museum Pac-Man...so that's not really the issue either.

I haven't played the DVD versions but I have heard that there are 1-2 second pauses on some DVD players after a move is selected...

The DVD-Rom versions (I don't know if they are still available) should be arcade perfect versions... these would be used on your PC - if you built a MAME cabinet, it would be easy enough to play the DL DVD-roms in it...

Hmmm, actually, playing it in Daphne is closest to playing the original machine due to the use of exact emulation and the real laserdisc.

The DVD-Player version is nice, but is not equal to the arcade version, since it lacks the randomly played game sequences. The PC version should be kinda equal.

But when your LD Player isn´t supported anyway, i guess you could scrap that idea sadly....

Btw, you actually CAN watch the whole disc on a standard Laserdisc Player! But without any interaction.

But his LD player is supported..... Like I said you used to be able to buy a version that worked perfectly on a standard player and you controlled Dirk with the remote control.

I know because I was going to buy it, but then I remembered that Dragons Lair was crappy game and I would probably only play it for 10 minutes and never touch it again.

.

I´d really LOVE to see that version, because the LD standard generally doesnt support such functions. Perhaps you are referring to the Amiga Dragons Lair LD version, where you could connect your LD Player to the Amiga and play the game (came out around 1991)?
