Can you play NTSC-J (japanese import console) on an American NTSC CRT (old type) TV?

Recommended Posts

I bought a Famicom (Japanese NES).

I have an imported American CRT TV, NTSC-American.

Anyone knows if I can plug a Famicom (Jap.NES) into such a TV, or do I need something in addition?

If it's an A/V Famicom, then yes.  Just plug the A/V cables in like you would with an American NES.

If it's an original-model Famicom, you'll need a cable-ready television or VCR capable of tuning in channels 95 and/or 96 (that's what Japanese channels 1 and 2 map to; these channels are also sometimes called A-5 and A-4).  Sites also recommend using an NES switchbox, and not the RF cable that originally came with the Famicom.

You can play via RF if your TV has channels 95 and 96... I did this with my PC Engine before I bought an AV cable for it.

The seller, on one of pictures of the item, showed this:

Just a FYI: The US and Japan both use NTSC standard. You will have no problem at all. I used to play a Japanese N64 DD in the US.

While not a Famicom, I've been using for a couple years now a PC Engine Core Grafx II just fine using all its original parts hooked into my TV without fault.  But that one does use RCA so there's no roadblock as some pointed out with earlier RF only using systems needing a good VCR that can tune those Japanese channels in the 90s.  Your problem really would come from a PAL system before a NTSC one.  50 vs 60hz is a bigger issue.
