Loot Crate is bankrupt

I have some loot crate stuff in my office -- Mal from Firefly, the Alien xenomorph, a Tribble -- all from a loot box. 

 

Having a kid with hoarding tendencies (like most kids, I guess) has made me more selective.

You should pick something better to be your downfall. Those look bad. Arduino sound, tiny screen, noisy buttons, inaccurate gameplay, poor software choices. The ingenic-based Chinese handhelds can do a lot more, and work better.

Oh, I never said I thought they were good- only that they hit all the right buttons to make me want to collect them.

 

I'm hoping to hold out & see if people will get them for me for holiday presents... they never know what to buy anyway ?

I dunno, I think the Funko dolls are kinda cute. My wife and I have a small collection, around 30 total, just of characters we particularly like. The vast majority of them are nothankyou.jpg but sometimes one will strike a chord with one of us, and we'll pick it up if it's less than $10-11. 

 

That said I'd never buy one of those blind pull Funkos that they have at the local Mega Replay. That shit be whack.

I would like to know what's the thing with those funkopop dolls. Dead-eyed, bloated head, bland face with little to no facial elements...

I mean I don't ask for superdetailed figurines, but hide the body of Funkopops and 9 of them will be the exact same thing. Creedy bland, soul-eating bobbleheads.

The only ones I saw that were somewhat funny were the ones depicting really weird characters that were disproportionnate to begin with.

I joined Loot Crate when it first started. I recall for how long maybe 3 or 6 months.  I liked it just fine, it was like $18 a month and you got some cool stuff (I still wear my Groot socks) along with some pretty worthless stuff. I can never throw stuff away though, and the boxes were piling up. I eventually cancelled. I did wind up getting a GIANT $100 Fallout 4 Lootcrate a few years later when the game launched and was pretty pleased with it. For me it was a fun thing to try out for a few months. I didn't see it lasting forever though.

Like, do we blame Thinkgeek for the popculturification of everything ever? I remember when they first started out, and you could get some real fun, nerdy stuff from those guys. Then, it was like everyone saw them and decided that JAWS SINK STOPPERS were the way to go. I was watching Ashens' (presumably) last Loot Crate video, and I think the Jaws sink stopper might be one of the absolute worst pieces of ephemeral garbage tat he's ever received. Just awful.

I dunno. There have always been toys made from movies. Think about all those Star Wars action figures that few people had the foresight to hang onto after they grew out of them. My cousin donated a Darth Vader head-shaped case full of Star Wars toys to Goodwill in the mid-90s when he was getting out of high school. He kept them in prime condition, but figured he'd give some other kid a chance to play with them. Today the case alone is worth some real dollars.

Sure, there's always been merchandising cranked out for anything that could remotely, possibly be a hit... (and for stuff like Star Wars and Star Trek, obviously they had been exploiting collectors with useless junk for many a year... remember how some of the Star Trek toys in the 90s had friggin' SERIAL NUMBERS?!) but man, it sure seems like after Thinkgeek started bringing us Star Trek TNG communicator shaped ice cube trays and TARDIS shaped teapots, suddenly you've got like 2001 A Space Odyssey Monolith doorstops or Big Trouble in Little China Porkchop Express mudflaps or whatever clogging up the pop culture shopping aisles of America and, indeed, the world. 

 

Adults with spending power showed a bit weakness, and BAM! you're suddenly looking at a Jaws drain plug wondering where everything went wrong.

Like catpix said, most my issue with those funkopop things is the fact that 90+% of them use the exact same mold (and tbh, just look like s#!t)

 

someone mentioned amibo (skylander and the similar) but, even if (like me) you don't play the games, the micro statues themselves are beautifully detailed. I do have quite a few of those, though I'm using them as decorations rather than the intended gameplay element.u

 

I was wrong, I do have one funko figure, it's spyro, and a friend bought it for me cause I'm a huge fan of spyro. It's actually decent looking too (especially for a pop vinyl figure) 

 

@ The imageimage poster, that's actually I nice collection. If I'd ever seen one, I would have been really tempted to get cl4ptp.

I wouldn't put it on ThinkGeek specifically. Geek/liscensed ephemera of this nature has been available from many a tchotchke seller for quite some time. I grew up flipping through catalogs offering stuff plastered with I Love Lucy and Bewitched, for example. It's merely the by-product of kids of the heavily merchandised 80s growing up and just expecting to be able to get licensed goods for their properties of choice. Only now they're adults and the goods are weird, household objects. For a glimpse into the future, hit up a casino & check out the slot machines based on properties/celebrities from the 70s & back.

Not really, but the figures sure are as long as you have the weapons. The weapons are worth as much or more than the figures in some cases.
