Recommended Posts

Once again, we'll have demos of several upcoming games at the AtariAge booth during the 2019 Portland Retro Gaming Expo.  Here's what we have lined up this far:

Atari 2600:

Atari 5200:

Atari 7800:

Atari 800/XL/XE:

Atari Jaguar:

This list is by no means exhaustive, these are just the games I've lined up so far.  I will update the list as we continue to march towards the show in October, and I will provide details about the individual games in posts below on a periodic basis.

Avalanche

Atari 2600

by John W. Champeau

Avalanche is a port of Atari's arcade game Avalanche, originally released in 1978.  Gameplay is very similar to Activision's Kaboom! for the Atari 2600, which was released in 1981.  In Avalanche you need to collect falling rocks using baskets before the rocks reach the bottom of the screen (in Kaboom! you are catching bombs in buckets instead).  Avalanche supports 1 or 2 players, using paddles or joystick controllers.

Tower of Rubble

Atari 2600

by Dionoid

"How long can you survive on the lethal TOWER OF RUBBLE as it crumbles and rebuilds itself around you?"

Tower of Rubble is a simple, yet very addictive game, in which you control a little stick man that must survive on the 'Tower of Rubble' as long as possible.

Blocks of pebble will fall from the sky every second at random positions, building up the tower. And at the same time laser beams will tear down the tower by clearing out full rows or columns of pebble. Also the outside walls will slowly disintegrate and sink into the sea.

Sounds hectic? It is! But you have to keep calm and make the right decisions in a split second to stay alive.

The music is synced with the pace of the falling pebble, which helps to raise y our adrenaline levels!

Zoo Keeper

Atari 2600

by John W. Champeau

Even though Champ Games has been busy working on several upcoming releases (Wizard of Wor Arcade, Galagon, and Avalanche), John W. Champeau has also been working on a port of Taito's Zoo Keeper for the Atari 2600!

As some of you may know, Zoo Keeper was advertised back in the 80's in an issue of Atari Age magazine as 'coming soon'. Although rumored to be near complete, a prototype has yet to be found. However, a VHS tape was found that shows the animated sprites that were to be used, and the audio notes from the original Atari sound programmer Robert Vieira was also discovered and converted into a working ROM by AtariAge member Thomas Jentzsch.

Thirteen years later, Champ Games has decided to bring Zoo Keeper to the 2600!  Plans are to have a playable demo in our booth at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo!

Penult

Atari 2600

by Karl G

AtariAge user Karl G, fresh off his release of Space Game last year, is hard at work at his next 2600 game, Penult!  Fans of the classic Ultima RPPG games from Origin Systems will immediately recognize the similarities between Penult and Ultima.  Karl is targeting the style of Ultima III, which is one of the more popular games in the series.  We're huge Ultima fans, so it's very exciting to finally see a game of this style coming to fruition on the 2600!

We'll have a fresh demo of Penult running at our booth in Portland.  Be sure to check it out, especially if you've ever spent any time playing an Ultima game!  Penult is a 64K game using an extra 128 bytes of SARA RAM.  Penult will be our first game running on a new 64K version of our Aria board!

Dare Devil

Atari 2600

by Muddyfunster

Do you have what it takes to become a Dare Devil?

Join Dare Devil Dave in his parachuting adventures though 8 increasingly challenging levels. Watch out for the obstacles as you fall back to Earth. Sounds easy right? Wait until you are being thrown around by the wind and you try to land in a tropical storm on a desert island! Grab your parachute and helmet, lets go. Jumping out of the airplane is the easy part!

In Dare Devil you need to navigate and weave your way past the obstacles and land safely. Each level has 7 sky screens and a landing screen. Points are awarded for progressing through each screen and landing safely.

Hitting an obstacle will send you hurtling to your doom, although not all obstacles are fatal. Birds will bump you off course, maybe the innovative Dare Devil can use that to get out of a tight spot? Clouds are harmless and you will pass right through them.

Arkanoid

Atari 7800

by Matthew Smith (mksmith)

The era and time of this story is unknown. After the mothership “Arkanoid” was destroyed, a spacecraft “Vaus” scrambled away from it. But only to be trapped in space warped by someone……

Gameplay

You control a paddle (the spacecraft Vaus) at the bottom of the screen which you use to deflect an energy ball towards rows of “Bricks” at the top the screen, thus destroying them and eventually clearing the screen to progress to the next level.  Certain bricks when destroyed release power-up capsules which grant additional powers such as capturing the energy ball, equipping your Vaus with a laser cannon or opening a warp gate allowing you to escape to the next level.

The final 33rd stage is a confrontation between the Vaus and the entity “Doh”.  To destroy the Doh and return from distorted space, hit the Doh repeatedly with your energy ball whilst avoiding the deadly projectiles he spits from his mouth.

Isn't that one done?

Cannonhead Clash (previously Bomb Game)

Atari 2600

by bluswimmer

"How long can you survive on the lethal TOWER OF RUBBLE as it crumbles and rebuilds itself around you?"

Cannonhead Clash is a two player bomb-lobbing game featuring two things, known as Cannonheads, chucking bombs at each other. The object of the game is to hit the other Cannonhead with a bomb, causing them to fall into the water below. The bombs can also be used to destroy the terrain! Use this to your advantage, and try not to let your side get destroyed too much- you can't jump, and you can't climb up walls more than one block high!

To move your Cannonhead, all you need to do is hold left or right on the joystick. The fire button allows you to shoot your bomb. Remember, the longer you hold down the fire button before releasing it, the farther your bomb will go! Strategy and quick thinking are key- may the best Cannonhead win!

Magical Fairy Force

Atari 5200

by AverageSoftware

The war for Fairy Land has begun!  Magical Fairy Force pits good Queen Sugar and her allies against the evil Zevasha, who is bent on conquering Fairy Land and destroying the powers of good forever!

Fly into the fairy arena as one of eight characters and take on your opponents in airborne duels.  Select your character with the Trak-Ball or joystick controller and press the trigger to lock in your choice.  Once both players have chosen their characters, the battle begins.

Magical Fairy Force is very heavily influenced by Twinkle Star Sprites, an awesome Neo-Geo game that you should go look up if you aren't familiar with it.  Twinkle Star Sprites is a competitive top-down vertical shooter featuring a cast of cutesy characters blowing each other up.  If Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and a game like Strikers 1945 had a baby, it would be very much like Twinkle Star Sprites.

Player 1 is on the bottom half of the screen, player 2 is on the top.  Move your character with the controller and fire at on-screen obstacles with the primary button.  In the center of the screen is your flight power, which will steadily decrease over time.  Shooting clouds will cause fairy dust to appear, which can be collected to restore your flight power.  Touching clouds will drain your flight power, so be careful!  If your flight power runs out, you lose the game.

Shooting stars will appear near the center of the screen and shoot at you.  Avoid the shots, if you get hit four times you will die and lose the game.  Destroy the shooting stars before they vanish to gain fairy power.  By pressing the second trigger, you can use your fairy power to attack your opponent.  Try each character and see what they can do!

After one character has been defeated, you will return to the character select screen to set up another match.

Robot Zed

Atari 2600

by Chris Spry (sprybug)

One robot remains in the force and it's up to you rescue your fallen robot colleagues.  You control the last Robot, Robot Zed.  In this demo, you run through a rogue-like, horizontally scrolling base level to find and locate one of the fallen robots, to take back to your base for repairs, so you can use their abilities in future levels.  But to find your buddy, you must run through the base and battle the enemy's own robot force.

There are four different robots in total.  The standard robot will sometimes supply you with energy when defeated.  The other three robots will give you their power once defeated.  After you gather their power you can change with down and jump to cycle through your collected powers to pick.  Be careful with how much you use them.  Every time you use a special power, it'll drain your power tank.  Once you run out, you will return back to normal power until you gather more power capsules from those three special enemies.

Good luck in your quest and don't forget to have fun!

Robot Zed is a new, original Atari 2600 game from Chris Spry, whose previous creations include Princess Rescue and Zippy the Porcupine.
