I got to see one of these at GameOn Expo a couple of weeks ago.  Really fun, and the sound is impressive.

What's playing it like? It looks great, but the only video reviews I've seen show really cramped controls.

It is tiny, so it is a bit cramped.  It is playable.  I played for a few minutes until the battery died (had been on display all day.)  The screen is vibrant and the sound, especially the bass and noise, is surprisingly good for the size.

I have mine and it's awesome!  Only thing I was a bit disappointed with was the outer box had a small crunch on mine... thankfully it had no impact on the mini arcade itself.  

 

If I didn't enjoy Tempest as much as I do, I would likely have sold mine already as well.  I didn't get Centipede, nor did I pre-order any of the future games as they don't hold a special place in my nostalgia.

 

This Tempest plays really well and the two different sized spinner caps included was a great idea!  The small one for display and the bigger one for playing!
