Atari 2600 display issues (with pics)

Hey everyone!

I'm relatively new to the Atari and could not find anything online that exactly describes the issue I'm having, so I figured I'd post here and try my luck.

I have a 2600 (six switch) hooked up by a coaxial plug into a crt video monitor. A some of my games work with little to no issues with gameplay or display. However, a majority of them have a very peculiar issue. After powering on the Atari and hitting the "game reset" switch, there is a block of graphics, always on the left side of the screen), that will go fuzzy/wavy, then sort of "bleed" up and down until it covers most of the left side. It also causes some of the objects in game to appear wavy/distorted as they approach that part of the screen. I have some photo's attached from Maze Craze, Kaboom, and Superman.

I attempted to clean the cartridges that do with isopropyl alcohol but that did not help.

Any insight and/or help would be greatly appreciated!

  • 2 weeks later...

Have you been able to duplicate this on a second monitor source?  Also have you tried both Channels 2 and 3, or even a different RF cable?  Are you using a TV Switch Box or an F-plug Female Adapter?  That TV might not have very good internal RF shielding and with a troubled TV Switch Box right behind it...  You might also try moving your RF cable around to see if anything clears up while moving it.  I'm no expert but this sighting's gone stale, maybe this will jump start it lol.

I don't know what's causing that, but they're not HMOVE bars.

Maze Craze only hits HMOVE once per frame, around scanline 21 so it's not visible.

Kaboom hits it multiple times while the screen is drawn, but not on every scanline.

Superman hits it once per frame, on scanline 60 which is the red divider line between the score and gameplay areas.
