BBS software for a test.

Recommended Posts

OK... so I figured 9600 was best because as far as I am aware the UDS-10 does not negotiate .... but I also just realised that the other end is Telnet.. so the 19200 only matters for my end.. not the telnet end.. so I could set it for 19200.

FLow.. I did have it at 02 - which is hardware .. CTS/RTS  I changed it back to 00 NO CONTROL.. as a test to see if that might have been the issue.

Again.. I used to have it at 56.. which is answer with DTR.. D6 is answer unconditionally.. which again.. thought might be a good choice for troubleshooting.

Discconnect mode.. again did have it at C2 originally.. but was reading through one of my old threads here on AA and found that until I set it to 81.. I was having issues with double characters.. etc... so changed it to 81.. though this testing.. I would say I have found no differences in changing the disconnect mode.. and I dont see how that would effect people to connecting with me.

The main issue.. I THINK with the software I am using.. and I know this for a fact.. ForeSight is waiting for RING to show up.. then it will answer..

Attached is the config file from Foresight.. you will see at the beginning it states what AT command settings it is looking for.

Okay, so for comparisons,  BBS Express! ST does with MDM

files what ForeSight does in it's .CNF file.

ANSWER.MDM \BBS\ Modem file which BYPASSES ATA.
BOOTUP.MDM \BBS\ Modem file when BBS first run.
RESET.MDM \BBS\ Modem file used after caller logs off.

F10.MDM\BBS\ is run when exiting BBS Express (just resets).

And in fact, I don't even have any of these files, with the

exception of F10.MDM, in place. When I exit Express, it

does this:

ATH
ATZ
ATM

So that when I start Express again, it's all ready.

Just looking at RESET.MDM though, it consists of these

lines:

ATH
ATM
ATS2=128
ATS0=0

So although Express is fine with nothing but the settings

used by the UDS-10 and Express answering, it's apparent

that ForeSight is expecting more.

I think I would go to the relevant part in the .CNF file and

play with some of those settings, at least sending the

commands to ready itself and wait for calls.

PS Hmm, I did find my original BOOTUP.MDM file, that was

used and in place when we were dial-up. Ugh! I can see why

I ditched it once I found out that Express seems to operate

with a UDS-10 without it just fine:

AT&F2
ATW2
ATM
AT&T5
AT&K3
AT%C
ATS2=128
ATS3=13
ATS4=10
ATS5=8
ATS6=2
ATS7=19
ATS8=2
ATS9=6
ATS10=14
ATS11=95
ATS26=9
ATS37=0
ATS38=2
ATS46=136
AT+MS=11,1,1200,19200
AT&W

Right....  :)

ok, but the UDS does not see S registers beyond the 0  so I could set ATS0=0 and it wants a STRING.. but the UDS can only accept single commands..

Now I notice that the UDS responds with   RING 000.000.000.000   the address that is trying to connect with it.   I know that Foresight is looking for RING.. I wonder if its missing it because its not accepting the full response???

Has anyone else successfully ran ForeSight with a UDS-10 (or other model) setup?

If so, I think talking to that person might go a long way towards helping you

resolve your situation.

Actually, if you're getting a ring with an IP address, it's seriously time to consider re-writing the answering code to look for the substring RING and then log the rest of the string so you have a record of what IP's are calling.

OK, so then maybe my next step is to get GFA basic working.. and load up the source.

Yeah... Especially right now when we're getting hit with bot activity, you want that IP information.

Well, I have decided on a couple of things.

1. I think ForeSight is setup a lot like other bbs' so I think this is an issue with UDS / MSS  (yes now playing with a MSS-100 I have)

2. I would love it if someone else would set up the demo foresight bbs and see if they can get it to run.

3. I am having issues with port forwarding.. I think this is my ISP.. I cannot prove it.. because they will not definitively tell me yes it works and this is how.. or no it doesnt.. They say they dont support port forwarding .. but it is available. hmmmmm

4. I have purchased the parts to make a pair of Zimodem wifi modems. I will see if I can get these to work better or different.  The parts were $9ea.. so what the heck.

Can you send me that ForeSight file or post a link to it?

I'm still off work and have some extra free time. I'll

take a stab at seeing if I can get it to work with my

setup here...

Got it, thanks.

Gimme a few days and I'll see how it reacts here.

PS If you get a tsunami/F5 tornado/Richter scale 10 alert, well....  :)

Okay, first impression - the docs say that it was never meant

to be distributed in this form and lots of various configuration

files might be missing...

How do you know that what you are using is complete?

Thanks.

Thats not what I have been dealing with.

I think I have progress.   If you try BIKERBOBSCLUBHOUSE.DDNS.NET   you will get a connection.. nothing happens because thats just the mss-100 autoanswering.. and there is no software doing anything.  BUT its getting through the router!!!!

That does look like progress!

I am looking at "Last Build". It's kind of uncertain which

release he's talking about when he made that comment.

Since you've got it running there, I'll assume he didn't

mean the last release.

When I get some more time I'll see if I can run it here.

Thanks.

So, you got on DarkLord, how did you get on. I think my init line is not good.

It is a file  Modemdat.txt   and it is

+++ ATZ

Other settings that FoReM requires are the default for the UDS-10 - so I could try it with NO modem init string??

The version I am running is far newer than the manual I have.. and it looks like the fellows that were involved with it in the end are off in the ether.. I dont think I am going to find newer manual.

Otherwise the Message system of FoReM is good. Not as much that I can play with an modify as I could with ForeSight.  I am still going to work on ForeSight.. I need the MSS-100 for that.. but it should work.. I am missing something in settings either on the device or the software to get them to work together .. but they SHOULD.

I have taken the advise from other learned SYSOPS and changed my port to a non-standard 5590.

Very frustrating. THE ISP says they dont block any ports. But it works on TCP 23 - it does not on any other port. How do I test this to know for sure????

Even set 3 rules - 5590 to 5590

                          8888 to 5590

                          9000 to 5590

I cannot get the UDS-10 to answer the telnet request on any of these.

    If I use the internal IP and 5590. NP from within the network

IF I use tcp 23 - it works external.   THEY swear up and down its not them.. I dont know a definitive test.

At first glance, you'd think something wasn't being forwarded but

it looks like you got that covered.

On the other hand, I don't know why your ISP would let 23 go

through and block the rest.  <shrugs>

If you're not getting slammed by a kazillion bots or wannabe

hackers, leave it at 23 (for now).

Got to be a solution though.

Quick syncterm question, i've gone from 1.1 to 1.2a. When i try to connect to a bbs thats down or gone, i get the Connecting box, but it never goes to Error. ESC on 1.1 or even a mouse click will cancel the attempt, whereas 1.2a does nothing.. I cant get out of the Connecting... box and have to kill the app.. Anyone else have this issue?
