brain
You can run the UII units standalone for drive operations, which is the only way it would have compatibility with the 264 series. Jim

carlsson
The '1541 Ultimate-I', the predecessor of the 1541U-II, is also a cartridge, but can also be used in stand-alone mode. The user can use the buttons to (blindly) navigate through the directories, or send IEC commands to a secondary device on the bus. This secondary device also allows saving and loading files to the FAT file system directly, but is not as compatible as the 1541 drive. In stand alone mode, the unit can be used on other Commodore models as well (Commodore 16, PLUS/4, etc.) Currently, the stand-alone mode is not yet supported on the 1541 Ultimate-II, and can therefore only be used as cartridge on the C64/C128. http://www.1541ultimate.net/content/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6:intro&Itemid=19 So the answer to your question is that if you get an old 1541 Ultimate of the first generation, you can use it with your Plus/4 but if you get a current Ultimate-II+ you can not and I'm not sure if you'll ever be able to. Or if you have nothing to work from, get a cheaper device like a SD2IEC, an uIEC/SD from Jim Brain as above, or perhaps a Pi1541 setup if you have a spare Raspberry Pi 2 or whatever hardware is required. The Ultimate series are great with the C64/128 but fairly basic use on all the other 8-bit Commodores.
TomXP411
The Ultimate II+ works fine in stand-alone mode, or with the cartridge plugged in to one computer and the IEC cable going to another. You have to use a Commodore 64, 128, or a Telnet connection over the network to actually control the U2+, but the disk drive connection can be to any Commodore computer with an IEC port. however, the SD2IEC is probably a better choice for a Plus 4 or C16, as it can be controlled directly through DOS commands or using the FB file browser. carlsson
Cool, is that how the II and II+ differ or did the firmware get updated while the website didn't? Also perhaps it is a matter how the Ultimate is powered, if it doesn't have a C64 catridge port to steal power from.
