Again these sound so much better in real HW than on my Altirra emulator.

Atari Player Editor is a separate editor, many developers I have worked with, prefer to give them the sprites in .apl format,

it's easier for them to import them directly in the code.. or something like that !

 

It is developed for the Atari 8-bit, I don't think it can be used for the 7800..

compromises had to be made to make him only 3 colors.. but not bad overall !

Why can you not just make more sprites to get more colours? Or restricted by the zone etc?

Well if the sprites are of differing palettes it eats into DMA time the same as using 160B

Can not cart tech like R and V bup chip etc.  take care of this?

It can to a degree.  There is some draw tearing still on Rikki and Vikki.  I am not familiar with that hardware.

Yeah, I think Bentley has 8 pixel wide sprites..

but if you check my pacman in post #67 it's quite possible to squeeze them in and still look good !

Bentley animation consists of 2 frames (running / walking) instead the animation of Pac-Man is composed of 8 frames (running) + 8 frames (walking).

 

In general, there are too many differences, therefore the game engine should be updated (IMHO).
