Bought wrong size TOS chip

TOS 2.06 can work in any ST, but it needs some + circuit and intermediate 28-32 pin sockets + soldering .

Would not call it 'hardware hack' . This is just adding address decoder, what adds address space of TOS 2.06, because it is different than address space of TOS 1.00-1.04, what is $FC0000-$FEFFFF . 2.06 address space is: $E00000-$E3FFFF. As may see it is longer too - 256 KB instead 192 KB.

You can see here how approximately it looks, first photo: http://atari.8bitchip.info/flashest.php

There are some ways how to solve address decoding for 2.06 in ST .

Sorry but adding hardware for software to run on a computer that was never designed to use it is a "hardware hack" in my book.  Call it what you want, but TOS 2.06 was never released for the early ST machines and it needs extra hardware to make it work.  I guess you can get a TOS 2.06 boot disk if you have 1MB RAM, then it would be a software hack.

Well, calling something hack is a bit matter of taste. Usually it means doing something not supported by basic design. Or some simple solution what works for purpose, but may be problematic in some situations.

TOS 2.06 is done with intention to work on ST machines too - there is code what detects HW, and will not try to use HW available only in Mega STE or STE.

TOS 2.06 can not fit in ST TOS ROM space. That was actually not future proof design error - they set TOS 1.00 ROM address space on very high location, right under HW register address space, and it can be max 192 KB long - $FC0000-$FEFFFF . At $FF0000 starts HW address space.  Because 2.06 is longer (actually even 1.06 did not fit in 192 KB, so they moved TOS ROM address space to $E00000 in STE because that). In other words, it was simply not possible to make TOS 2.06 as simple put ROM chips in machine solution.

Using TOS from RAM is not really good solution if you want to use it regularly. That's something what can be called rather hack, but again, tastes ...
