The video was recorded on a PAL machine. I played it last night on my real hardware NTSC machine, and the music plays as fast as I always remember. So it's just the normal 16.7% slowdown any game will exhibit on a PAL machine that is synced to VBLANK.

Ah, I see. That didn't occur to me. Thanks!

Hi @TIX!

Amazing Work! The playability is much improved and the rebuilt graphics are just great.

The title screen is also super charming and reminiscent of the original coin-up.

A couple of comments:

1) I do agree with Atarimania re: the font being used. If you're not interested in using the classic Williams font (with a strong Colecovision / MSX feel), maybe use the classic ATARI GAMES (coin-up) font?

2) Considering you're building on the original game / engine, would it be possible to credit the original programmers on the title screen?

Programming: Scott D. Smith
Graphics: Courtney Granner
Audio: Robert Vieira

Their names actually show on the back of the original box (US Release). This was one of the first occurences of ATARI Inc. (Warner era) crediting their programmers.

Again, thank you for the tremendous work.

Well I think this deserves a new topic !! (and a new avatar) !!

This is much more than my previous sprite hack..

Moon Patrol was one of my first attempts in hacking, doctorclu helped me get started and I was hooked,

I drew literally hundreds of buggies until I settle in the design I considered the best it can be in the limitations of the original game.

So I released it and moved along..  but it doesn't leave my mind,

I continued to draw assets of the game as I tried to learn how to hack the playfield to incorporate them..

In the rate I was learning I calculate it would take me 10 years to do it :lolblue:

But then coder extraordinaire playsoft stepped in providing advice, tools and in many cases altering the code to fit in my crazy ideas !!

We worked together in the past weeks to bring you the best 8bit version of Moon Patrol :P !

Done:

  • new mountains backdrop
  • new moon city backdrop
  • new starting base
  • new title screen
  • new tanks, mines, lives left, moon plant, rocks (all playfield graphics)
  • new colors
  • bug fixes introduced by the new buggy
  • and I'm sure I forget something..

It's a dream come true for me !!

Enjoy

Well Playsoft did his magic again and had the game detect PAL/NTSC and adjusting the music speed and colors accordingly !!

He also alter the title screen !!

I changed the fond to arcade classic, only compressed in height to fit in 6 pixels !   I  also took the chance to edit the progress bar..

Unless we broke something in the process, I expect this to be the final version  ;)

Have to say this looks fantastic now!

The only thing I would change is the order and centering of the options at the bottom of the screen but not sure it would fit:

START on the first line

SELECT and OPTION on the second line

C and D on the third line

Like this or did you have something else in mind?

It is simply 3 rows of 40 characters if you want to lay it out.

Moon Patrol -Redux- looks awesome! :) I frankly love to see new graphics on old classics, under a brand new, polished engine.

Fancy to say a few words in Greek about the making of? @TIX you've got an open invitation :) ...and here is the link

We'd love to hear more about it.

I'm not keen on the first one, second is OK though. If anyone has any more layouts they'd like to see then please post the text as you want to see it so I can just paste it in.

I thought playability is carbon-copy of the Atari original, as only GFX changed?
