SC1224 Monitor Dead or Fixable?

Just got a new to me SC 1224 Color monitor today. It was packed well but I can’t get a good image on it.  I show an image the seller took (looks to be working fine). Then how it looks when it arrived (I get a pretty good image but it only takes the middle 3rd of the screen). I tried all the adjustment screws, when I make the image taller, the top half of the screen has big gaps.  Do you know if this is something that can be fixed?  BTW I hooked a good second SC1224 up to the same 1040STE and the image was fine so the ST is doing its job.

When I adjust for a taller image the top half has these crazy gaps and there is a bright white bar across the middle.

Most likely some capacitor(s) in vertical deflection are weakened. It's job for TV service man normally.

Thanks. I’ll see if anyone in my area services such ‘TVs’ these days.

If you trust the seller, it's possible some capacitor and/or potentiometer has just a cold solder joint, i.e. it got damaged / twisted / disconnected during the transport.

IMHO it´s absolutely worth to fix this monitor. The SC1224 has a superb picture quality and real CRT feeling at it´s best. The picture you get now should exclude problems with the flyback transformer, one of the expensive parts to replace.

 

Like nearly all monitors and TVs after +30 years, the main problems are:

 

- Cold solder joints, specially because only single sided PCBs are used

- dry electrolytic caps

 

Most SC1224 I´ve repaired only with resoldering the main PCB and replacing the most important capacitors. Herewith I mean: Every cap used in high voltage area (when there´s more than 50V printed on the cap) OR with a value equal or more than 100 uF. Of course it would be perfect to change all, but IMHO this is not really necessary.

 

Disclaimer: Every CRT uses high voltages with the risk of an electric shock and may harm you. In doubt don´t try this by yourself. Contact an experienced TV repair guy or friend with such skills.

Dev-Docs have the service manual for it. I think you can find what you looking for in there.
