2600 vs. Coleco Round #02: Bump'n'Jump

Recommended Posts

Hi Manuel!

Just comparing Bump'n'Jump on both systems, which one do you like better and why? Which is your favourite?

I'm not sure I correctly remember Bump'n'Jump for the Coleco, but if I'm not mistaken the scrolling is jumpy..

So the smooth scroll of the 2600 version would make me choose it over the Coleco version :)

It's a bit ironic how the "later" systems like Colecovision, that are supposed to be more programmer-friendly in some way (more sprites, tiled background, etc.) somehow lack some basic features that the 2600's more low-level hardware let you achieve (multi-colored sprites, smooth vertical scrolling, etc.) ;)

2600 version gets my vote, better scrolling and hit"n"miss. I think you'll find in general that the scrolling on the coleco is rarely ever smooth. 2600 has its games, coleco has its games,,,, etc

CV version using the steering wheel. Tons of fun.

The VCS scrolling is better but that's not enough for me to overcome theCV version.

Between the 2600 and Coleco, my favorite version is...

... Intellivision. :D

I think both versions are great. The 2600 version gets the nods for keeping the great gameplay intact without looking like an atrocity, and the ColecoVision version for the graphics and gameplay. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Right-o Megaman. The Intellivision version is terrific, even with those annoying controllers. One of my faves for that system ...and for any system for that matter. Great box art too.

I had a chance to get the INTV version a few weeks ago..boxed and complete.

I have the 2600 version and I would say that it's very good for its capabilities.

How many of you played this in the arcades before it even made it home? I was really excited when M Network's cart came out and fully satisfied with the play. The jups get ridiculous in the later levels. You have to die several times until you memorize the accelleration necessary to land on platforms that you don't see until it is too late. 2600 rates above Coleco for pure gameplay. I never tried the Intellivision version but now I need to.

Not sure about the Coleco version's gameplay.. but the 2600 version is overall pretty refined. The complete lack of flicker is great: just look at how the cars move to avoid having more than 2 objects on the same line!

Playing it is definitely rewarding :)

(and hard!)

I played the arcade version first, and I was disappointed with the 2600 version -- those jumps you need to memorize? Just doesn't work in the 2600 version. If you jump from the same place with the same speed, you can land in different places, and that's just not correct.

Sadly, I have yet to try out the Intellivision and Colecovision versions, but the NES version isn't that bad. They add a boss to the game (ugh), but at least it uses the same game mechanic, so it's acceptable.

Yeah, I played the arcade version alot before the atari 2600 version. The arcade one i played was called Burning Rubber. 2600 kept the gameplay,

2600 is the king of all the bumpers and jumpers imho. i like it better than the coleco, inty, or arcade vers. tho the inty vers is really good in its own right, i find the 2600s speed to be better.
