Certain Games Don't Work on Two Port 5200

Recommended Posts

I recently got my first 5200, and, as the case on it was cracked, ordered another that was "untested". The untested 5200 actually came with some games: Moon Patrol, Galaxian, Ms. Pacman, and Space Invaders. I already had a few games: Qix, Pacman, Super Breakout, Soccer, Baseball, and Centipede. When I put Moon Patrol and Galaxian in the 5200 I already owned, they both had weird glitches. Moon Patrol would have weird colors, purple on the title screen, and the rover was green instead of purple. Galaxian had random lines on the screen and would not start. Every other game I had worked perfectly on this system. When I tested these games on the untested 5200 that I had just gotten, they worked perfectly. I tried reseating all of the chips on the board of the original 5200, but the games still don't work correctly. If anybody recognizes these symptoms and could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Mountain King

Pitfall 1 not 2

K-crazy Shoot-out

Are know not to work on 2 port systems.  The rest should be fine.  it's weird they are not.  There is a color pot adjustment wheel inside the 5200 you can try adjusting.

Technically you could swap in a bios chip from a 4-port and get compatibility.  Otherwise if you had an Atarimax flash cart, there are hacked versions of those games which do work on 2-ports.

Well, these games work on one of my two ports, and don't work on the other. They are also not four port exclusive games, also, it's not just the colors that are wrong, Galaxian crashes at the title screen. Is there anything special about these games?

Hi,

Did you try cleaning the carts?

I did, with rubbing alcohol and an eraser.

You said that the game work on one but not the other? Then open it up and check your RAM or swaping them out.

I think I'm going to try that. I'm really busy with finals right now, but I'll update some time.

I have a custom 4-port OS chip that changes the text / font to a computer style that I can make you a copy and put in yours!

That sounds cool, how do you install it?

Very easy! It's the only 24 pin chip on the board, upper left. Remove the old one and replace with the one I made.

Sounds pretty cool. This weekend, if I'm not too busy, I'll try swapping some chips around between my 5200's. What does the computer font look like? I've actually never used an Atari 8-bit, but I really want to get an 800 or 800XL.

You took the words right outta my mouth, and yes, I DO have those hacks to Mountain King, K-razy Shoot-out, and Pitfall!

Could you please tell me where I can find those modified titles? K-Razy Shootout is one of my favorites.

Can't find a rom here but most fullsets out there have variants, and the hacks will usually read this way: [h1] (Two Port)

In re-reading the OP's issues, this was not his major problem.  Sounds like something else (dirty or faulty).

I definitely agree that something is faulty. I cleaned the cartridge connector with a toothbrush and IPS, and same with the carts. They work on my other two port just fine.

It was simply made because I DO happen to have all 3 hacks (one for each game) and I was about to (at the time) bring that up, and maybe share with fellow 2-port 5200 owners with Atarimax Multicarts so they can play those three great titles too.

...and, yes, just now I read the quoted yes his problem was not related, thanks.

So I found a cheap copy of Pitfall 1 with box.  One of the three that is not supposed to work.  Did not boot in my 2 port.    So what exactly is supposed to happen?

Mine is just black screen.  No audio or video.  Is that how its supposed to be?  Or does it boot and then glitches while playing?  Or hangs while trying to boot?  Shouldn't I at least get the atari logo trying to load?
