Wonderboy WIP - Favorite Port of All time

Hoaxer team is back again with a new update.

wonderboy.car

 

this is now considered to be a playable demo

wonderboy can:

1. collect egg to turn into axe

2. throw axe

3. collect fruits (to gain points and power life)

4. die when touch skulls or fires

5. stumble when hit a rock

6. die when fall to death

7. collide properly with terrain

8. if you die you start from last flag ("sign") you have crossed

 

i am not publishing a full release notes with what works and what doesn't (bug) as this is not a release candidate version but just an interim one.

oh, try to complete level and shoot all enemies. just before you complete the level "goal" sign, snap your screen and paste the result here. let's see who has the highest score....

I´m stuck here. How am I supposed to reach the next column here? Seems like I´m missing 3 pixels to jump behind the next fire.

And you can't throw your axe at it to put it out either.... that's if you have an axe at this point in the game.

Well, 

for those who are not familiar with the arcade game,

if you hold down fire button and keep it pressed , then jump - you jump higher 

so when you get stuck on that terrain you need a higher jump to continue

This is what I tell my friends every time they complain about the jump. They just don't get it.

Could you please do the world a favor and fix the tune during gameplay? 

It's such a simple tune. Pokey could replay that using 16 Bit resolution.  Particular if a song is that repetitive, the dodging of notes gets more and more disturbing.

I´ve never played Wonderboy on any platform and somehow my brain was stuck with "Fire is for throwing the axe". Thnx for the hint, so here´s my first try (emulator only, will fire up the real thing now ;) ).

How is the game demo? 
you like it?

nice graphics ?

playable?

a never seen before platform game ?

hard and challenging to develop ?

anything positive coming from your end ?

Nice! 

I can’t tell you score can be higher so

it means either you did t collect all objects and or didn’t kill all skulls

 

the level is challenging to complete , ive done this on purpose as I don’t want this to be an easy game :)

Haha, as said: First try and on Emulator. I don´t like playing on emulators, so I actually didn´t kill all skulls, just wanted to see the whole Level first.

For real scores, I need a real machine and a joystick. Both are warming up next to me. ;)

This looks great and is very playable. Wonder Boy was one of my favourite C64 games and this looks like it's going to be better than that version.

I would love to play this on real hardware but I am currently on vacation, so I can‘t check it out. However, since the Demo is distributed as a cart image, I assume I won‘t be able to anyways. I have recently installed an Ultimate 1MB.  I understand that you can reflash the  Basic Roms and the Missile  Command ROM of the XEGS into the Ultimate Firmware. I haven’t played with this functionality (yet), but I assume that there are some restrictions like image size, etc, that would need to match.

These U1MB slots are limited to 8K, non-banswitched cartridge ROMs. I haven’t played this WIP game so I don’t know how large the .CAR file is, but I’m guess bigger than 8K.
