R-Type issue and solution!

Well, today I was playing R-Type...and went back to play it later. But this time it would not load. Freezes at the title screen. Rebooted a few more times and got it to load again, and then not. I am using an HxC floppy emulator to run this game by the way.

I remember having issues with this game years ago as well and that is when someone said that it does not like KS1.3 and the loading is flakey. It was written under KS1.2 apparently. There are a few games like this that have issues (or will not load at all) with KS1.3....but very few.

So, today I started checking other dumps of the game and these were hit or miss. Same deal, loads fine sometimes. I figure either the KS issue or the crack is the cause. But then I found that Factor 5 actually released this game to play in UAE along with two other titles for free now to download and play:

Even though the page says they will only work in UAE, that is not entirely true. I have been playing all three of these games on a real PAL Amiga 500 all evening. And, R-Type works fine every time! I wonder if they did something to the adf to allow better compatibility with KS1.3 as most UAE users would be using that? In any case, no complaints. It works each and every time and I can finally just play this great game!

Another interesting thing is BC Kid. This was a two disk game, but their download is a large single adf file. This would not fit on an 880K floppy, but it works just fine with the HxC floppy emulator!
