How reliable is a RCA Studio II

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I've found a RCA Studio II for about $160 in the box with 3 boxed games. I'm very much considering it, however the seller says its untested. It does however, include all packing material, and cords (Including that famous rf/power box) and it looks pretty much brand new. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger, but before I do, I'd like to know the chances of it arriving and being a dead unit. Thanks.

They can often have problems. Usually easily fixable but you have to be able to do the repairs.

But it could also be fine so its really just a gamble.

Its a good price if its in nice shape and complete. Often the problem is bad ram chips which can be replaced.

Literally everything looks brand new. Some cables appear to have original ties on them. Games look brand new too. Mind if I send you a link so you can have a closer look, I'm not very familiar with the system.

If its hardly used i think that increases the chances of it being good.

But honestly there is no way to be sure without testing it.

Pictures wouldnt help determine that. One of my worst ones works great lol

Alright. If it does turn out to be broken, how difficult are these repairs

I've been wanting one of these for a while now.

Basically if you can unsolder and resolder a chip that would be the most involved.

Not super easy but you basically have done it or you havent and might be able to learn it.

There are probably people here that may do it for you as well. Not me though ;)

never done that in my life, but I think I might know someone who can. I think I'm going to take the deal. It looks completely mint. It includes what seems to be all cords and the rf box.

What games were included, and what is the Serial Number? Those minor details can sometimes be of interest.

It seems to be a somewhat young unit. the Serial number is 123210.

Came with the following boxed games:

TV School House II: Math Fun

TV Arcade III: Tennis/Squash

TV Casino I: Blackjack

In fact, now that I've bought it you can just take a look at the listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/RCA-Studio-II-TV-Game-Console-Home-TV-Programmer-plus-3-games-COMPLETE/174129947925?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Also, $160 was an offer, in case you were wondering why it says 199.99

Alright, well, this was to be expected. I’m having a bit of trouble with the system now that’s it’s arrived. I don’t think it had ever been used before I turned it on (cords all had been twist-tied with what appeared to be original twist-ties). However, I think the ram might be bad. When using the switch box, the light on the system lit up, so I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with the power supply. I tried plugging in a cartridge (speedway, which I bought separately) and the best I could get to appear was what looked like a large white maze on the screen, and the system beeps occasionally. I’ve gotten the maze to happen again using the default included games, but past that no games are playing. This time, I took a photo of the maze. You can see it below this post. I’m thinking it’s the ram, but maybe I’m missing something. It should be noted that it beeps when it manages to make something beep. I believe it’s attempting to play the game “patterns” when it makes the maze? I don’t know. This comes up no matter the key you press, I think. It takes around 30 - 45 seconds for this to appear after the initial button press. Any help would be great. Hey

Thats too bad.

If the cart and slot are clean it likely is the ram.

If it beeps then its probably working other than the display ram.

Hopefully flip or ed keefe could give more details on trouble shooting or fixing it.
