This is the most awesome thing ever. So often these game modes go untried/unplayed because they're option 58 or whatever and ultimately you never dig out the manual to find out what they are. It's already breathed new life into the games you've tackled. Bravo sir!

I'd love to see this treatment given to all the original Atari release games. And even Activision and Imagic's wares too.

Too bad there can't be a common framework or encapsulation for this and that each game could be inserted with minimal fuss.

At least when the 2600 AHA awards add the best 2600 Hacks, Omegamatix will be in-line for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. With these quality of life improvements for the original AtariGanes titles, Venture Reloaded, and the numerous trackball hacks he should likely sweep the field or be up for a lifetime achievement award.

Great idea and I tried it out last night and it gives them all a new lease of life!

It makes it feel like a 7800 game which I love for the menu's at the start of most games.

Just saw this thread tonight, and I am floored!  This is marvelous work. Right On, Man!

Also chalk me up as another member who's hoping for physical releases of these someday.

These are so cool to see

What about Maze Craze?

I guess its according to which box you have or both Original has 256 games and later has 16 on box

Loving it! The green background is most appropriate.

As is the blue background

I initially thought the Jets looked odd:

as I'd forgotten they fly at twilight:

I love this whole idea, especially when it comes to Space Invaders with those 112 variations. Being able to select them in an easier way really helps.

Also, major, major thanks for providing both PAL50 and PAL60 versions too - I'm currently only able to run PAL50 stuff on my 2600 (as my setups don't quite handle the PAL60 modes right), and being able to set these up on my Harmony is really appreciated! :D

Makes you really appreciate how much these programmers crammed with such little space.

A great idea with excellent implementation! This really puts a new coat of paint on some of the classics.

I’d love to see Missile Command and Berzerk get this treatment. Thanks!

(The earliest menu I am aware of on the 2600 was Commie Mutants)

@StephenJ, frogger doesn't fit within the spirit of what he's doing. That game only has options for 1 or 2 player and difficulty. Where a game like space invaders has over 100 different game options, variations and combinations that benefits tremendously from a start menu.

good day.

When I created the topic I chose not to have any pictures of the screens. My thought process was it would be a nice expierence for people to see them for the first time when they open the game. This completely backfired on me. People didn't really find anything interesting so they moved on without trying the games. So I've now added pictures of each screen and placed Super Breakout at the top since it is the most colorful.

Indeed - when I first encountered this post, I thought it was a *proposal*... Not that you had actually *done it*, and that was with the screen shots being posted.

Once I downloaded and tried the games, I was duly impressed!

(and it especially helps, since I'm playing this in Emulation, where it is much nicer to select options from a game controller primary inputs, and not a meta-screen of select/reset/ab/etc)

Kudos!

It really breathes some new life into these old games!

Awesome!  These are turning out better than I had imagined they would.  Too bad Atari didn't do this back in the day when they re-released these games.  Of course that would have cost money...
