My modern gaming for the week...

Wii

Legend of Zelda:  Twilight Princess - 445 min (Just finished up Death Mountain dungeon.  Was a bit frustrated at one point where I'm supposed to be fighting things on my horse.  I remember that being one of the worst parts of the game, though.  I never was that good at it, but finally got through that part.  Pretty sure there's more of that coming up, though.  Need a bigger wallet because I stay pretty close to maxed out on rupees and it's annoying to find a 50 rupee chest and can't hold it.)

Except of course that there is almost nothing useful to buy in that game.

It was quite a big week for gaming in my household this past week week, mostly on account of two new games I had been really looking forward to (so much so that I pre-ordered them) coming out on the Switch. The first was Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, which was just absofreakinlutely fantastic and well worth the $5. It's a brilliant port of the original Duke Nukem 3D with the option to play with the original graphics or very nicely updated "True 3D" remastering, brand new levels from the original level designers, new dialog from the original Duke Nukem voice actor, and some excellently implemented new features like motion controls and HD rumble. Basically, if you liked Duke Nukem 3D back in the day and you own a Nintendo Switch today then Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour is a definite must-buy game!

The other new game I was looking forward to that came out this week was... not so good. Blair Witch dropped on the Switch eShop this past Thursday, and being a big fan of horror games I was super excited to check it out. After playing through the game from start to finish in one long 9 hour sitting, and I can safely say that it was not at all worth the $30 price tag. The premise of being stranded alone in the spooky woods with no one but your faithful German Shepherd for company was pretty cool and the dog was the definitely the star of the game, but the gameplay (which largely involves wandering aimlessly through the woods until you find that one place the game wants you to go at any given time) was rather boring and many of the puzzles were just plain obtuse. Combine that with a lackluster story that spends hours harping on the same couple plot points as if you didn't understand them the first dozen times the game alluded to them and an extremely unsatisfying ending, and... well, I can't recommend Blair Witch. If you want a good horror experience on the Switch then go play Alien: Isolation, Outlast, Darkwood, Resident Evil or Resident Evil 4 instead and give Blair Witch a pass.

On the more retro side of things, for the first time this past week I finally beat Lethal Enforcers on the Genesis! Lethal Enforcers is by far my favorite light gun game of  the 16-bit era so it was super satisfying to finally complete it, and with that win under my belt I decided to take a crack at Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters while I was at it. There's no doubt that Lethal Enforcers II is an awesome game, but holy heck is it hard compared to the original! Even on the Easy difficulty this game just kicks my butt, and while (after many attempts) I was able to make it to the final boss once I'm not sure it was really meant to be beaten in single player mode. I may have to recruit a friend for help if I ever want to beat this one

The only other retro gaming topic of interest this past week is that I made a rather cool discovery regarding the hilariously wonderful FMV light gun game Crime Patrol for the Sega CD. I always thought you needed an ultra rare (and ultra flakey) proprietary American Laser Games light gun for this game unless you wanted to play with the joypad, but it turns out that it's also compatible with the Konami Justifier! The gameplay may not be anywhere near as good as Lethal Enforcers, mostly on account of sketchy hit detection, but the acting in the game is some of the most over-the-top comedy gold I've ever seen in a video game so definitely give it a try if you get the chance.

That's all for this week!

So, I finished TLOU2 on Wednesday. What an amazing experience. I've had a hard time articulating how much I enjoyed this game, but when I wasn't playing it, I was thinking about it. And when I finished it, I continued to think about it. Then I tried playing another Naughty Dog game, Uncharted 3, and I just couldn't get into it, because I was still thinking about TLOU2...so, I decided to replay the first TLOU New Game +, which I kinda wanted to do before playing the new game, but forgot. Finished that and the Left Behind DLC, and now this evening I started a new NG+ run of TLOU2. Hopefully by the end of that, I'll be able to focus on something new....

Also, I picked up BoxVR this weekend to supplement my BS VR gaming. And I'm very sore today, lol.  It's a pretty good workout of muscles I don't use a lot.

Here are the mid-season stats for the modern tracker, with some references to the previous year.

In the first half of 2020, we've played 227,403 min (30% of all-time) and 235 games (28% of all games) on 19 systems.

It can be compared to the first half of 2019, when we played 159,690 min (45%) and 184 games (35%) on 22 systems.

PUBG which used to be the dominant #1, is now down to fourth place. Instead we now has a new superior leader for this year in Animal Crossing, though it has slowed down a bit lately.

On the systems list, the Oculus Quest is a strong newcomer in 4th place. There also was a case of a "Revolution" handheld system that for most appears to have been an elaborate joke, but I've left it in the tracker just in case it was genuine.

Re-Volt GL 685

PS4

Moss 189

Resident Evil VII 59

WiiU

Zelda Breath of the Wild 346

X360

Jetpack Refueled 16

XOne

Oxenfree 47

Rocket League 406

Shadow of the Tomb Raider 407

I spent a lot of time this week driving little cars in video games.  I spent time early in the week playing Re-Volt GL and then decided it was finally time to try Rocket League.  I don't really enjoy games that are focused mostly on multiplayer, so I doubt I'll put much more time into Rocket League, but I've got some tasks left to complete and some races still to win in Re-Volt.  Besides driving little cars around, I actually had quite a bit of other variety:

Moss was excellent but short

RE VII started out fun

BotW is as impressive as everyone says

I finished Oxenfree and Shadow of the TR.  I wrote a little blurb about Oxenfree in the Modern Games Beaten thread.  Not a great experience for me, but there were some positives in there.  Shadow of the TR on the other hand was very satisfying.  I think I understand some of the criticism that game gets, but it had the best story of any of the three recent TR editions, and they really upped the effort on the challenge tombs and crypts which was very welcome.

Modern Times

Wii

Twilight Princess - 862 min (Played quite a bit more this week.  Got to the point where I can change into the wolf whenever and warp, so wandered more picking up random heart pieces and Poe souls and such.)

DS (times approximate)

AlphaBounce - 60 min (This is a breakout style game, which is great for the DS because you control it with the stylus.  You can get different upgrades such as a way to shoot blocks and things.  Some of the blocks shoot back at you, increasing the difficulty on some screens to a sometimes frustrating degree.  Some blocks will release powerups that come down... some are beneficial and some are not.  Don't know if you can still download it or anything, but it's pretty good as far as breakout style games go.)

Mario Kart DS - 20 min (Tried for a little bit to work on the 150cc class races, but I'm so out of practice I never got above 4th place.)

Plants vs Zombies - 120 (Remember this one?  I played for a bit on an old game save, but then deleted it and started a new one.  I don't know that I have the patience to go all the way and beat it like I did on the XBox 360 back in the day, but it's definitely a fun game for a couple hours.)

It's been an awful long time since the Atari 2600 was the top system in my household for a week, but we played kind of a ton of a Atari this week! The Atari 2600 High Score Club has really got me feeling enthused about playing Atari again lately, so on top of the HSC games for this round I also went back and revisited a bunch of my old favorites. I played a fair bit of Commando Raid, Millipede and Missile Command TB, Ms. Pac-Man, Pitfall II, and Road Runner; and the spousal unit joined in as well and logged a good chunk of time in some of her Atari favorites with Adventure, Dig Dug, Frogger, and Missile Command. The Atari 2600 really was a remarkable system for it's time, and it's still just as fun to play today. :)

The Last of Us Part II (1047 min)

PC

Terraforming Mars (214 min)

Oculus Quest

Beat Saber (284 min)

BoxVR (150 min)

About halfway on my NG+ game of TLOU2, and I'm playing on a higher difficulty, which means more dying, and I'm taking my time to take in the scenery and try to find all the notes, safes, cards and other collectibles, they did a good job giving the collectibles some narrative value. And I thought playing again that the story wouldn't have the same punch, but the lack of surprise is replaced by expectant dread, which I think is worse, lol. And regardless, the gameplay is still super-tense.

Played Terraforming Mars with friends on Sunday, which was fun, but we didn't quite get to finish as we ran out of time; one player was unfamiliar with the board game and all of were new to the video game version interface. Next game should go more quickly.

Been crazy busy fixing up my house after a huge tree fell on it, then selling said house and moving to our cabin in the North GA mountains. Internet here sucks (5mbs) so I can no longer game online, and I've been setting up, fixing up our property here so I haven't been gaming much the entire year this in spite of the fact I'm no longer working.  All that said I have manage to play some games from time to time. Mainly Borderland 3 (The new DLC they just released) and a game I bought off my Amazon wish list a few weeks back called Pillars of Eternity.  I think it was a Kickstarter project that eventually got released at retail. Its pretty cool if you're a fan of old school RPGs. I'm hoping one day to not be so bust so I can really dive into my "to play" pile which is beyond HUGE.

There was a little less time logged in my household this week than last week, but the overall theme was about the same: A couple Switch games and a nice assortment of Atari 2600 titles. This week I finally finished Duke Nukem 3D on the Switch, though I may play through it again in the not too distant future since I know I missed a bunch of secret levels, then spent the rest of the week playing Atari. Every game on the 2600 that I played in this week the misses joined in on and played too, and it was a lot of fun all around with a bunch of new household high score records set in Missile Command, River Raid, and Space Rocks to boot. All in all, a solid week for gaming! :)

Xbox One

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: 1,440 minutes

Lego Jurassic World: 33 minutes

iOS

Microsoft Solitaire Collection: 89 minutes

I logged a few more hours in CoD this week. I'm firmly entrenched in the camo grind. Kind of like achievement hunting, but without the sweet sound of an achievement unlocking.

Each weapon in the game has challenges associated with them. Meet the requirements of each each challenge & you'll unlock a new camouflage for the weapon. There are ten different categories for each weapon (with 10 different camos in each category), ranging from total kills with that weapon to kills shortly after reloading and everything in between. The categories are not all available right away. First you have to reach the maximum level for each weapon by basically using it.

Once every camo is unlocked for the weapon, the gold camo is unlocked. Unlock gold camos for every weapon in a class (pistols, launchers, submachine guns, etc.), you'll unlock a platinum camo for that class. Unlock gold for every weapon in the game, the Damascus camo is unlocked. That's my goal.

Like achievement hunting, this gives me something different to focus on besides playing the game, which admittedly can get old fast, especially on nights when I'm not playing well. This is making the game much more interesting for me. Plus one of my buddies I play with is doing the same thing, so we compare progress all the time.

I've unlocked platinum for SMGs, LMGs & shotguns and am currently working on ARs (76.65% complete) and dabbling with pistols & launchers. I'm dreading the upcoming marksmen & sniper rifle ones, as that is NOT a strength of mine (I'm not even sure I have a strength in this game). I'm REALLY dreading the melee weapons (knife & riot shield), although I think I may end up enjoying using those.

You guys probably didn't want to read that, but I wanted to give a little insight into my current gaming goals. I'll spare you the tracking spreadsheets. ?

More Twilight Princess...

Wii

Legend of Zelda:  Twilight Princess - 881 min (Finished this one up this week.  Second (?) time I've beaten it.  Still no 100%.  Missing a few heart pieces somewhere and didn't do the Cave of Trials or whatever.  Also didn't get all the Poe Souls to turn in to some guy.  There's 60 of them and I think I got to around 56.  Anyway, still a fun game I think.  Only hard part was the horseback combat, which I remember having trouble with back in the day, too.)

PS4

The Last of Us Part II (799 min)

PC

Terraforming Mars (251 min)

XB1

Soul Calibur VI (27 min)

Oculus Quest

Beat Saber (383 min)

BoxVR (65 min)

A lot like last week.  TLOU2 NG+ game is nearing the end. I'll probably go back to chapters where I missed a few collectibles to get the platinum trophy since I'm pretty close when it's over. And even though I've done two complete playthroughs, I'm looking forward to it. The gameplay is just so satisfying and intense.

Won the game of Terraforming Mars that I played with a couple of friends on Friday. Was going to play SC6 with my brother, my that got sidelined, so the few minutes I played to learn the controls and mess around with the character creator is all I have this week.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare returns to #1 place with a somewhat close battle for positions #2 - #3. COD also secures the Xbox One as the #1 system, again with a close battle for positions #2 - #3 (does anyone see a pattern here?). Overall this was the second lowest turnout in number of minutes this year, perhaps it is due to vacation time?

I discovered something VERY strange this weekend which is that my physical copy of Minecraft for Xbox One (called the Xbox One edition) is not the same as the more recent digital edition.  There are a lot of differences and apparently cross-play between the two is not supported.  That's weird.  In this day and age why isn't there some patch that simply updates my version to the latest?  I do have access to the most recent version through GamePass, so I can play the other one too (with my niece and nephew), but I was just floored when I found out they were different games.  The funny thing is that I just haven't played Minecraft very much, so I actually found the older version a bit more friendly for a sophomore.  It had extensive tutorials and in-game messages about the items and blocks.

A pretty typical week for gaming around here this past week without a whole lot to report on. I just continued my usual routine in Animal Crossing, played a bit of Atari 2600 for the High Score Club, then—not being sure exactly what to play—decided to do a run through of Doom 3 on the Switch since it's one of those games I try to play once a year every year. For the spousal unit's gaming time she just played a little River Raid with me then put a bit more time into Wonder Boy in Monster World on the Genesis, which I think she's just about to the end of at this point.

That's all for this week! Thank you as always to Carlsson for continuing to run the trackers, your weekly time and effort keeping this little corner of the community running is always appreciated! :)

Ineligible

Death Trap (Atari 2600) - 241 minutes

River Raid (Atari 2600) - 51 minutes

Wonder Boy in Monster World (Sega Genesis) - 80 minutes

The Last of Us Part II (204 min)

XB1

Human Fall Flat (65 min)

SOULCALIBUR VI (43 min)

Two Point Hospital (2041 min)

Oculus Quest

Beat Saber (407 min)

BoxVR (69 min)

Decided to not finish the collectibles after finishing my NG+ run on TLOU2, I missed a lot more than I thought. Will play again sometime.

Two Point Hospital took over my life this week.  Love my sim games and this is a worthy spiritual successor to Theme Hospital. Also played some Soulcalibur with my brother, as well as another level of HFF.
