Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order 588

Transformers Devastation 402

I finished off Calamity Gannon in BotW early in the week and then moved on to some of the other titles in my modern backlog.  When I play this much, I like to have more variation in the genres that I play simultaneously.  It was probably a bad idea to play God of War, Jedi Fallen Order, AND Transformers Devastation all at the same time.  They have similar gameplay but slightly different controls.  I found myself not remembering that evade was even an option in Fallen Order until I had to revisit the controls after dying a ton.  "Which button does what?" was heard in my house a lot this week.

Also, I dug a road/tunnel between two of my settlements in a Minecraft survival game that I have going.  They weren't even that far away and it took hours.  I still have never encountered a village on the Xbox One version.  Why do I keep playing this game?!

This week was pretty much the same as the last for me, just playing a lot of the 2016 DOOM reboot and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch. I did finish DOOM for the umpteenth time though, so the only game I'm still playing at this point is Breath the Wild. I think I might fire up the Sega Genesis next week though, it's been awhile since I've played it and with a Mega SD at my disposal I've got hundreds of games I've never played to check out. For the misses gaming time this past week she got in another hour or so of New Super Lucky's Tale on the Switch, and uhhh, that's pretty much it! I hope you're all staying safe and having a nice relaxing holiday season, and a belated Happy Thanksgiving to the other Americans here! :)

Not a lot of minutes again this week. Watching a lot more tv than usual (Queen's Gambit and The Boys, mostly), mostly biding my time until Cyberpunk releases in a couple weeks. Started Plague Tale, been meaning to play this one for a while and it should fit in nicely to two weeks along with some more Fuser and SoT.

Keep the minutes coming, will we hit 10K for a fourth consecutive week?

Just 2 this week. Not much else to say.

PS4
Kangokutou Mary Skelter Finale - 1,772

I am now 4.5/5 done with the game. I didn't put as much time into it this week as I started writing (the world's first English-language?) strategy guide for it. Will finish the game either today or by Wednesday.

Vita
Kangokutou Mary Skelter - 16
Doing some research on a glitch that has been present in the entire series. Nobody seems to have documented the presence of this glitch in this game in English, but sure enough, I confirmed that it does happen here, as well.

This week was a lot of fun gaming wise! It had been quite a while since I had done any retro gaming and the spousal unit hadn't played games hardly at all for just as long, so this week we spent a few evenings playing Sega Genesis and trading off the controller between levels. First we did a full play through of Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (via the Mega SD) which neither of us had ever played before, and holy cow that game is just freakin' amazing! The last couple levels were reaaaaally tough, but we persevered and were able to finish it on our last continue. After that we checked out the original Shinobi for the Master System, which was pretty fun but wow are those mini game levels you have to beat to get ninja powers super difficult, then we played about halfway through The Revenge of Shinobi before calling it a night. Later in the week we did a full play through of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was just as fun as ever, and actually managed to get all the chaos emeralds before we had even finished Casino Night Zone; which I'm pretty sure was a first since we almost never get them all until Mystic Cave Zone.

As far as modern gaming goes, it was all Breath of the Wild for me this week! The second play through is turning out to be even more fun than the first, since I have a pretty good idea of where everything is and what to do now, and I'm putting a lot more focus on completing side quests and just taking my time exploring every nook and cranny of Hyrule this time around; and oh boy is there ever a lot to explore.

That's all the gaming news from around here for this week! Until next time, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours.

God of War 751

I kept going in God of War.  I was getting annoyed at how a lot of the boss fights seem to just be much less interesting than the multi-enemy fights before them.  I went and found some reviews that agree with me like this one:  I Hate God of War's Trolls (kotaku.com)

Anyway, reading that helped me realize that I wasn't really missing anything.  I now just relax and take my time with the Trolls (and similar bosses and sub-bosses).  I think I have yet to die fighting one since I read that article - lol.

A Plague Tale: Innocence (299 min)

NHL 94 Rewind (23 min)

PC

FUSER (103 min)

Oculus Quest

Beat Saber (466 min)

Tried to get A Plague Tale done this weekend, as Cyberpunk (which I'm pre-installing as I type this) is out Wednesday.  Not quite there, so hoping to finish tonight. I scored in the top 25% of the weekly challenge in Fuser last week (not sure exactly where, they don't really tell you, but it wasn't top 10), so I gave that another go this weekend. NHL 94 Rewind was a free perk for NHL 21 preorders, but it's now available on Game Pass, so I played a game of that, too.

The modern games tracker cools off a little after three intensive weeks, though Kangokutou Mary Skelter Finale on the PS4 remains the most played game, 12.5 hours ahead of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch. Pop! Blitz on iOS is a strong third. The Xbox One has the most number of games this week, which puts the system in second place between the PS4 and Switch.

One game, two systems.

PS4
Kangokutou Mary Skelter Finale - 737

Done! According to the timestamp on the trophy for beating the game, I beat the game 23 hours and 42 minutes after my previous post here. Final save file time was 87 hours and 59 minutes. First time on the Switch was 102 hours and 31 minutes, so I was considerably faster this time while still doing/seeing everything. Still not sure how I feel about this game, especially as it officially kills this unexpectedly good series/story, but at the very least, I feel it was ultimately a good send-off for this unexpectedly good cast. To my surprise, this game has the exact ending that I wanted it to have, even though I never imagined that it actually would, so yeah. I'm at least thankful for that.

Switch
Kangokutou Mary Skelter Finale - 555

Switch version is back. Additional research required, so literally no choice but to play the game again. Might as well be able to play in bed like a lazy dude, so the Switch version comes back instead of a second PS4 run. Skipping all of the dialog this time to go faster, which is definitely working. I want to take it easy this week, I think, primarily to avoid burning myself out by playing this crazy long game 3 times in a row, so whatever I post on the 21st will likely be much smaller than typical.

Here are my times for this week (December 7th through 13th) on modern systems:

Browser based:

Castaway - 158 min. in 5 sessions

Castaway is a Flash game on Armor Games which may go away in January due to support for Flash games ending. Since my PC still runs on Windows XP, my browsers stopped getting updates which also means they still support Flash. So it's maybe my last chance to play this game again. Right now I'm still on the first island, but the only task left is to finish its "boss" and deactivate the "sand generator". To reach that, however, I still have to gain some levels. Right now I'm at Level 6 which is the same as the first scorpion I encountered, so I suppose the boss will have a few more levels than me, and I still have to gain some strength to beat it.

God of War 292

I finished the main story in God of War.  Playing this game was strange for me.  I really liked the story.  In fact, I'm willing to say that they broke new ground in terms of telling a compelling story that crosses over literary genres between mythology and modern "journey lit."  At times, I thought I was playing a video game version of "The Road."  I was impressed throughout by the quality of the storytelling.

However . . . and this is hard for me to say because I love story-driven games, but there was almost too much story in this one.  Or maybe the problem was that the gameplay just wasn't that compelling for me.  Or maybe it was just too big a departure from previous God of War games.  I don't know exactly, but something about the actual fighting in this game wasn't as satisfying as past entries.  I posted that article last week about the trolls just acting as "speedbumps," but I thought almost all of the combat sorta felt like a speedbump.  It was thrown into a mix of story and 3d puzzle solving in a way that just didn't let you really feel like you were mastering fighting as Kratos.  I never felt like I got a real hang of the combos on the face buttons and the pace at which you were expected to learn new combat attacks and tactics was too fast to be really enjoyable.  Something else is that I have to look way back into the past to remember a game where I enjoyed shopping and managing my inventory less (maybe something like Armored Core?).  Every time one of those dwarfs popped up with an item shop, I really dreaded it.  The armor and weapon upgrades never really felt like they made any sort of obvious difference, but I was scared to ignore the upgrades entirely.  And the way the menus had you view upgrades but then exit to actually view all your equip-able items and skill upgrades almost felt like deliberate punishment.  I wish there was a "upgrade me automatically" button.

Anyway, all that complaining to say that I would still give this game a 5/5.  It is a great game, but I'm definitely not as complimentary toward it as many other reviewers.  I probably enjoyed Shadow of the Tomb Raider (which I played earlier this year) a bit more.

It was a pretty darn good week for gaming around here this past week! I logged a bunch of time in Breath of the Wild on the Switch as per usual, started a new game of DOOM Eternal on the Xbox One, and did some classic gaming with the spousal unit. First we tried out Streets of Rage 3 on the Genesis, which unfortunately didn't have quite the charm of the first two games. It was way harder than the first two, often unfairly so, and the soundtracks that were always so memorable and well orchestrated in the first two Streets of Rage games were replaced with a bunch of industrial noise that reminded me a lot of two robots humping in a scrap heap. Soooo, yeah... I wouldn't recommend Streets of Rage 3.

Next up we tried out Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition for the Genesis as well, since I always liked the original Jurassic Park game so much, but sadly the sequel suffered from much the same problem as Streets of Rage 3 in that it was absurdly difficult. We only played for 14 minutes before giving up, after half a dozen failed attempts to get through the first level. Finally, after two not so great games, we decided to give Snatcher for the Sega CD a go last night (via the Mega SD) and holy guacamole Batman this game is AWESOME! I rarely use all caps, but Snatcher totally deserves it. The cool Blade Runner-esque story, gorgeous pixel art animation, clever storytelling and solid (for the time at least) voice acting all make Snatcher a definite winner of a game, and I love that you can do all the shooting sequences with the Konami Justifier light gun! We're only a couple hours into it at this point but I'm sure we'll be playing through Snatcher to the very end, because this game is just freakin' amazing. ?

Just one game again...

XBox 360

Fallout 3 - 734 min (Figured out the freezing issue... needed to update the game.  Which, since my 360's wifi won't connect to my router wirelessly, and I don't have a long enough cord, meant taking it across the room and having cables from the router to the 360, and then from the 360 to the TV.  But the update fixed it.  Finished Waters of Mars mission.  Realized that I'm at max level so I can't get the next perk I was wanting to get, and then just started exploring and wandering.)

Cyberpunk 2077 (1007 min)

Beat Saber (328 min)

Didn't quite finish APT, but I've only got a hour or so left. Meant to finish it off on the weekend, but I really got into the other game this week, Cyberpunk. It's got it share new open world game warts, but what a fun game. I had a lot of problems with the driving, but I'm getting used to it. And you definitely need to look both ways before crossing the street, as pedestrians are fair game, it would seem. Character creation has a lot of options. Combat is fun and hacking is interesting. Only game stopping bug I've encountered is suddenly not being able to choose options when talking with an NPC at one point, and needing to restart. Otherwise glitches have been fairly minor. My buddy on PS4 Pro and a coworker with a barely sufficient PC are both having trouble with the game crashing. Sounds like they're going to patch it early next year, but sucks that people bought a game expecting to get something playable, if not top end, but not even getting that.

1. Xbox One - 2030 min. (#2)
2. Switch - 1190 min. (#3)
3. PS4 - 1029 min. (#1)
4. PC - 1007 min. (#7)

6. Oculus Quest - 328 min. (#5)
7. iOS - 213 min. (#4)
8. Browser based - 158 min.
9. Xbox Series X - 156 min. (#8)

Total 6845 minutes and 18 different games on 9 different systems.

The new game in town, Cyberpunk 2077 takes both places #1 and #10. The battle for second place is tight, only 3 minutes apart. Systems wise the Xbox One which doesn't have a single game among the top 5, has enough entries to easily become the most played system.

Stats wise, PUBG finally breaks the 80.000 minute barrier (80.517 min). In total numbers, the tracker also exceeds 380.000 minutes for the year and 900.000 minutes since the beginning. I'd expect it breaks 1 million sometime in Feb-Mar 2021.

Relatively light on modern side this time, as expected.

PC
Star Wars Squadrons - 217

Switch
Kangokutou Mary Skelter Finale - 476
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 5

GBA
Earthworm Jim - 3

This port, like the Game Boy port I also played over in the tracker for old systems, is terrible. Don't play it. Unlike the GB version, though, I had this version as a kid.
Metroid Fusion - 19
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis - 9

I got my GBA Everdrive in the mail, so naturally the first game I tested it with was this one. The badness is unbelievable. The exact words I said when I played it for the first time a few hours ago were "This is HORRENDOUS!" and it really is. You who are reading this SHOULD PLAY THIS GAME and experience it if you haven't already!
