Atarivox fit on 7800

Just purchased an Atarivox...love it...it works on the 7800...but seems to fit at an angle and pop out easily.  Any ideas for a quick fix?

Remove the AVox from its shell and use neked or hook to the end of a controller extension cable.

I use a 4-foot 9-pin cable extension. Works perfectly! I just bundle the excess cable with some Velcro.

One of these should extend the connection far enough and not add a zillion miles of extra bus time from the vox to the console.

For 99 cents and free shipping it's not worth the time spent building it unless you need a "right now" fix and have the know how and parts on hand. I'm guessing the OP doesn't (no offense).

A cheap extension cable might still be a better option as the joystick ports are angled downwards so unless the 7800 is placed with the vox hanging off a ledge it might put unnecessary pressure on the socket.

Even with the casing removed off the Avox it still presses up the socket slightly if you have the 7800 on a flat surface. So I use an extension cable with mine. An adapter or gender changer like shown is going to exacerbate the issue on the socket.

If your AtariVox has a metal surround on the DB9 socket, remove it. It will fit better in the 7800.

 

The attached 3D printer .stl files are for a case specifically to fit the 7800 better.

Which is why my extension cable also has 45 degree cuts on the corners of the DB9 side so I can fit it into the Vectrex as well.

The adaptor (above) lets you plug the AtariVox straight into the Vectrex.

 

The plug / socket are the insides of DB9's (metal surround removed).

This worked fine for me and it arrived the next day through Prime.

Of course you need a razor or xacto knife to slightly shave 2 corners so it'll match the Vectrex port.  Literally shouldn't take more than 10 seconds.

 

And if you have the brand new AtariVox that was just sent out, be sure to use the revised DIP switch settings.

It has been tried, at least with Time Salvo and it kinda works there but it's not perfect. I imagine it would have to be tested on a game by game basis as to whether it causes issues.

It does not matter that it is for Genesis and not Atari norm?

Megadrive / Genesis controllers can damage some Atari-compliant devices such as the Commodore 64 under some circumstances (like using the keyboard)

That's why you need an extension cable like the one I linked to and then slightly shave down the corners with a razor or exacto.

 

I've used the extension cables on my 2600 and Vectrex, I've not tried it on my 7800.  I don't see any reason for a Sega extension cable to ruin any game system unless it was defective and shorted internally.

Neat, I can imagine a controller with the AtariVox and speaker built in and wired up to have rumble like some third party Gameboy accessories which just shake based on the strength of the audio signal.
