What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2020 (Season 13)

Here are my times for this past week (June 22nd through 28th)...

Arcade:

Blueprint - 9 min.

Dragon Breed - 25 min.

Manhatten (DECO Cassette) - 7 min.

VIC-20:

Galaxian - 1 min.

Seafox - 57 min. in 5 sessions

Space Battle - 4 min.

This week I managed to get in a bit more gaming than last week. It started by watching a video telling that "Space Battle" was actually made by the later president of Nintendo. However, Atarisoft put another version of the same game out with "Galaxian", which is a bit less glitchy, but also less colorful, and "Space Battle" actually has the better rendition of the music... by far. Then I switched to Seafox, of which I played a few sessions.

On the arcade side, I tried Blueprint for three short games, and Manhattan for, actually, one game, after which I stopped playing because the game doesn't have too much depth. Playing Dragon Breed was inspired by an article about the C-64 version using mixed colors for some of the end bosses. But I quickly got to a point where I wouldn't get better.

DC

Chuchu Rocket 3

Space Channel 5 12

NES (Via Rare Replay)

RC Pro-Am II 43

Win 95/98

Re-Volt 10

ZX Spectrum (Via Rare Replay)

Knight Lore 30

Lunar Jetman 30

Well, I wanted to play Re-Volt, so I burned a copy for my Dreamcast which didn't work, and then the laser eye stopped reading even retail games.  I guess it is time to GDEMU that thing.  I did find an old copy of Re-Volt but then became quickly distracted by a fan-made update called Re-Volt GL (which I logged plenty of time for in the modern tracker).  Otherwise, I dinked around with some games in the Rare Replay.

DC Skies of Arcadia,  12 hours.

For those who know the game, I've found all the moonstones  now, the most recent being the Purple in the Ice area, and Yellow from the Valuan Maw.  Battles, even against Giga bosses, are not much trouble for my party now.  Random encounters are still too frequent, but I started to use Run and it often is successful.

It was quite a big week for gaming in my household this past week week, mostly on account of two new games I had been really looking forward to (so much so that I pre-ordered them) coming out on the Switch. The first was Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, which was just absofreakinlutely fantastic and well worth the $5. It's a brilliant port of the original Duke Nukem 3D with the option to play with the original graphics or very nicely updated "True 3D" remastering, brand new levels from the original level designers, new dialog from the original Duke Nukem voice actor, and some excellently implemented new features like motion controls and HD rumble. Basically, if you liked Duke Nukem 3D back in the day and you own a Nintendo Switch today then Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour is a definite must-buy game!

The other new game I was looking forward to that came out this week was... not so good. Blair Witch dropped on the Switch eShop this past Thursday, and being a big fan of horror games I was super excited to check it out. After playing through the game from start to finish in one long 9 hour sitting, and I can safely say that it was not at all worth the $30 price tag. The premise of being stranded alone in the spooky woods with no one but your faithful German Shepherd for company was pretty cool and the dog was the definitely the star of the game, but the gameplay (which largely involves wandering aimlessly through the woods until you find that one place the game wants you to go at any given time) was rather boring and many of the puzzles were just plain obtuse. Combine that with a lackluster story that spends hours harping on the same couple plot points as if you didn't understand them the first dozen times the game alluded to them and an extremely unsatisfying ending, and... well, I can't recommend Blair Witch. If you want a good horror experience on the Switch then go play Alien: Isolation, Outlast, Darkwood, Resident Evil or Resident Evil 4 instead and give Blair Witch a pass.

On the more retro side of things, for the first time this past week I finally beat Lethal Enforcers on the Genesis! Lethal Enforcers is by far my favorite light gun game of  the 16-bit era so it was super satisfying to finally complete it, and with that win under my belt I decided to take a crack at Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters while I was at it. There's no doubt that Lethal Enforcers II is an awesome game, but holy heck is it hard compared to the original! Even on the Easy difficulty this game just kicks my butt, and while (after many attempts) I was able to make it to the final boss once I'm not sure it was really meant to be beaten in single player mode. I may have to recruit a friend for help if I ever want to beat this one

The only other retro gaming topic of interest this past week is that I made a rather cool discovery regarding the hilariously wonderful FMV light gun game Crime Patrol for the Sega CD. I always thought you needed an ultra rare (and ultra flakey) proprietary American Laser Games light gun for this game unless you wanted to play with the joypad, but it turns out that it's also compatible with the Konami Justifier! The gameplay may not be anywhere near as good as Lethal Enforcers, mostly on account of sketchy hit detection, but the acting in the game is some of the most over-the-top comedy gold I've ever seen in a video game so definitely give it a try if you get the chance.

That's all for this week!

The air pirates from Skies of Arcadia maintains the #1 place, followed by some beat 'em up action in Renegade. The pre-NES list is a close three way battle between two different HSC games (Cosmic Commuter and Pitstop) and top game Solar Fox with two participants. Systems are the same as last week in places 1-3: NES, DC, 2600 with a few lesser seen entries including the VIC-20 and ZX Spectrum.

No new entries to the 1000, 5000, 10000 Minute Clubs. However some half-time stats will be posted later.

Here are the 2020 Mid-Year Stats, following the previous format. You can find the 2019 stats here.

So far this year, we have played:

  • 588 games (compared to 1007 games in 2019 and 1078 games in 2018)
  • 41 systems (compared to 51 systems in 2019 and 69 systems in 2018)
  • 77,535 minutes (compared to 105,034 minutes in 2019 and 115,238 minutes in 2018)

As you can see, the classic tracker has dropped off quite a bit in recent years. However we tend to play every game for a bit longer: it was 107 minutes in 2018, 104 minutes in 2019 and now 132 minutes in 2020.

Speaking of dropping off, Kaboom! no longer is the overall #1, a place that has been taken over by Solar Fox though Breath of Fire III is remarkably close in second place. Also if we look at the systems list, Mac OS Classic barely makes the list, and same goes for PC Windows 95/98 if it hadn't been for the small times posted on Cosmic Do! and Re-Volt. In the later case, I suppose there may be a little overlap with the modern games tracker.

By the way, I forgot to explain that games marked with an asterisk on the pre-NES list are borderline: Bubble Bobble was apparently released in 1986 so it probably is post-NES even in arcade form. The SG-1000 was of course released simultaneously with the Famicom, which we by tradition define as the cutoff, but since the SG-1000 more or less has the same hardware as e.g. ColecoVision and never saw a Western version, perhaps it should be included as pre-NES. Yes, there was the Master System but it is quite improved upon the SG-1000 while NES and Famicom pretty much have the same core features.

Atari 8-bit:
Orc Attack - 14 min.
Quasimodo - 14 min.

So it turned out I didn't play any retro games for the entire week, until late Sunday afternoon when the next round of the HSC opened. Without it, I would have scored a blank this week.

Intellivision:

Spiker! Super Pro Volleyball - 15 minutes

Meteors - 10 minutes

Aardvark - 25 minutes

Hotel Bunny - 12 minutes

Aardvark was my favorite of the group. Can't decide whether I like the Intellivision or the Atari 2600 version better.

Here are my times for this week (June 29th through July 5th)...

Commodore 64:

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - 19 min.

VIC-20:

Seafox - 15 min.

This week I only did two short sessions on two classic games... besides continuing to play Seafox on the VIC-20, I tried the C-64 version of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which has a different level layout than the arcade version. I only got to the first cart sequence on it. In Seafox, I also didn't manage to get any farther than previously.

Actually, I spent way more time doing tasks which aren't eligible as games, but still quite challenging, like "upgrading to a new phone", "unlocking a sim-locked phone", "cutting a SIM card down to size" and "teaching your father how to operate a smart phone". On those tasks combined, I spent several hours last week. ;-)

Times for the week are:

For the NES HSC - Ice Climber 64 minutes

Atari 2600:

Activision Checkers for HSC 11 Minutes, first time playing, fun.

Frogs and Flies for the HSC 47 Minutes. first time playing, liking a lot.

Kool Aid Man for HSC 23 minutes - First time, liking.

Picnic for HSC 29 Mins, first time. liking a bit.

Solar Fox 102 minutes.

Spider Fighter for the HSC on facebook 39 minutes - good game.

Six games for different HSC clubs. competing a lot. doing terrible.  I am finding the competition much more difficult than in past years.

All fun.

ZX Spectrum

Knight Lore 281

I managed to get all of the ingredients into the cauldron and broke Sabreman's curse in Knight Lore (aka finished the game).  I used the built in trainers that are part of the emulator within RARE replay, making heavy use of the rewind feature.  I also had to enable the "unlimited time" option.  I doubt I will ever play this game without a trainer of some sort.  The isometric angles combined with the precision required for some of the jumps was waay too hard to really be fun.  Save states/rewind with other cheats is definitely the way to experience this (at least for the first time).

Classic Times

Arcade (MAME)

Ms Pac Man - 15 min (Played with the speed hacked version on MAME.  I got an arcade style joystick and it works better than the d-pad, but still having trouble.  The stick itself has too much travel and is making the tight and precise turning necessary for this game difficult.  This is definitely one of my favorite arcade games of late.)

Raiden DX - 15 min (Love the Raiden games, but I'm not that great at them.  I would have played this one more, but I have the diamond gate in my joystick for Ms Pac Man so it made diagonals difficult.  Need to change it back out for the 8-way.  Also, my joystick has a turbo option, so... muwahaha!  )

It's been an awful long time since the Atari 2600 was the top system in my household for a week, but we played kind of a ton of a Atari this week! The Atari 2600 High Score Club has really got me feeling enthused about playing Atari again lately, so on top of the HSC games for this round I also went back and revisited a bunch of my old favorites. I played a fair bit of Commando Raid, Millipede and Missile Command TB, Ms. Pac-Man, Pitfall II, and Road Runner; and the spousal unit joined in as well and logged a good chunk of time in some of her Atari favorites with Adventure, Dig Dug, Frogger, and Missile Command. The Atari 2600 really was a remarkable system for it's time, and it's still just as fun to play today. :)

Ineligible (All Nintendo Switch)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 435 minutes

Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour - 240 minutes
