Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for this week (August 31st through September 6th) on classic systems... sorry, again no gaming this week, and I think it will stay this way for at least the next two weeks. Instead my actual current "game" is refactoring code, which is actually nearly as challenging as playing computer and video games. In two weeks I'll have one of my rare gigs as a keyboarder which will pretty much occupy a whole day, and until then I should record some Karaoke playbacks for someone, so I'm pretty busy at this time.

Steven Pendleton
12 hours ago, thegoldenband said: I don't know about Lotus II, but I know someone who spent weeks and weeks trying to beat Lotus Turbo Challenge on a Japanese Mega Drive, finally did -- and only then realized that they could/should have been playing at the intended speed all along, since they live in a PAL/50Hz region. Apparently the game is significantly harder at 60Hz. There's a list going at Sega-16 of games that weren't optimized for 60Hz (a list of the opposite, i.e. games that weren't optimized for 50Hz, would be ridiculously long of course). It's not always 100% clearcut but some cases are clearly too fast, like Shadow of the Beast. The vast majority are Amiga ports. There are also some PAL exclusives that don't work properly at 60Hz; here's a list in progress. One of the most insidious is Smurfs 2, which will reliably crash a few stages into the game. I had to beat that one in an emulator. Yeah, I never know with European games what I should be doing with refresh rates. My primary Genesis/MD is the Nomad, which can't change refresh rates, but I do also have the Mega Sg, which can be changed to 50Hz in the options. There is actually a PAL Mega Drive 2 for sale over in Super Potato, but I think they want some ridiculous price for it.

It truly is amazing to be able to play Baby Pac-Man at home. The game is just as brutal and unforgiving as the original - LOL Time Salvo is a nice homebrew too. I'll have to play one of the games it's based on at some point. (Crossfire, Targ, etc). I also went ahead and ordered a copy of Rikki and Vicki. carlsson
Here's the summary for Week 36, running from August 31 - September 6. We logged 2077 minutes of eligible play, playing 77 games on a total of 9 systems. Top 10: 1. Baby Pac-Man [Bob Decrescenzo] (Atari 7800) - 299 min. 2. Spiderdroid [aka Im Reich der Spinne] (Atari 2600) - 166 min. 3. T:me Salvo (Atari 7800) - 147 min. 4. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 104 min. (#3) 5. Doggone It! (Atari 2600) - 99 min. 6. NES/Famicom (187) (#5) 4. Sega Saturn (115) 5. VIC-20 (89) 6. Genesis (45) 7. Arcade (27) 8. ColecoVision (20) (#8) 9. Atari 8-bit (14) (#7) I don't know if Bob's someones uncle (ping @PacManPlus) but his Baby Pac-Man game wins both the overall and pre-NES titles this week, ahead of the Amidar hack named Spiderdroid. Except for Jackie Chan on the NES, the entire top list consists of Atari 2600 & 7800 games which also shows in the systems top list. Despite the big number of 77 games played, none hits the 1000, 5000 or 10000 minute clubs this week. Some games are getting very close to the 1000 minute mark though. 5

carlsson
Atari 2600: Bowling - 7 min. Atari 8-bit: Desert Falcon - 4 min. King Tut's Tomb - 7 min. Revenge of the Mutant Camels - 5 min. I'm still digging through all the games in the A8 HSC and have now tested all except those that wouldn't run on my computer and the text adventures. Now it remains to replay those I want to give it a shot at improving my score until the end of September. On the Flashback Portable, I finally managed to score 289 points in a bowling game at the default, easiest setting. I doubt I'll ever be able to reach that again, although the maximum of course is 300 points. I'm sure the really pro players have no difficulty obtaining maximum score on the easiest game, but I'm not one of those.
agb
Times for the week: Atari 2600: This week I had no HSC games to play. I own 178 different atari cartridges mostly bought in large lots or $1-$2 each. I have played 95, haven't played 83 prior to this week. Some of the 83 are great games I haven't got to yet. So this week I figured I would give some a try. Amidar 10 mins -great game, very similar to Spiderdroid which I played the last two weeks. Backgammon 45 mins - had a lot of fun playing Blackjack 8 mins. Got bored quickly Casino 70 wasted minutes which I enjoyed a lot Hangman 44 mins - Another game I really enjoyed playing. Midnight Madness 26 mins - Not as good as Video Pinball Solar Fox which I have played previous;y - 41 mins. I am down to 77 I haven't played yet but hope to play some this week. Fun week of retro gaming.
Kurt_Woloch
Wow, what an honor to see Baby Pac-Man at the top of last week's list! Seems like Wongojack really likes my pinball logic there. Actually, a baby always has two parents... in this case this would be Bob and me. And I admit that I still like coding very much, so this probably won't be the last retro game I've participated in... but at the moment I've got other things to do. Anyway, here are my times for this past week (September 7th through 13th) on classic systems... Atari 2600: Balloon trip - 3 min. Well, I promised you I wouldn't have much time for gaming this week and next week, but I did manage to sneak in one game of "Balloon trip", a homebrew game a bit similar to Flappy Bird or Joust, but pretty simple... you've got mines and the occasional balloon coming at you at increasing speeds, and you have to avoid the mines and catch the balloons. After a number of balloons you get bonus time where there's only balloons on screen before the game reverts to normal. And that's pretty much it... one game was enough to see it all.

These were all played on actual carts. Rikki & Vikki took over once it arrived. What a great game, and a fantastic addition to the 7800 library. If you've been on the fence about buying one, they are (finally) running out. I got #513 of 550. The team at PenguinNet says there are no plans to make more. Of course in this case, you can purchase the game for Windows too. 5

The pinball parts of BPM are excellent Kurt. Thank you for the effort you put in to help make it a reality. I'm actually not really that big a fan of Pac-Man in general, but the hybrid cabinet was always intriguing, and in recent years, I've had a chance to play it in real life a few times. On this version, I do find that when the captive ball is in the position above the left flipper it seems much more difficult to hit than when above the right flipper. Sometimes I will play an entire game and even earn an extra ball before I dislodge it from the left position. Although, I will say that I spent most of my time playing with a CX40 and when I switched to a Proline or gamepad the result was slightly different. Whatever, I'm not complaining. The game is great. Regarding Balloon trip. I downloaded it once and played it about as long as you. I believe it is inspired by the often overlooked Balloon Fight for NES. Balloon Fight is one of those NES games that somehow missed its window for popularity (at least in the USA). It is clearly a new take on Joust, but has a few different modes and offers a great high score challenge. I think if it came out in 1984 it would have been a huge hit, but it didn't reach much of the world until gaming had sort of moved on from wanting to challenge for high scores.

Eltigro
Another long list of NES games for me... Did another "Until I die" stream like I did before. Essentially, I just play the game until my first death and then change to the next game. A lot of these games I'm not familiar with at all... so in the video, you can hear me trying to figure out the game as I'm playing... and that's part of the reason some of the times are so short. Times are somewhat approximate. NES Gauntlet II - 20 min Ghost n Goblins - 2 min Golf - 7 min (For the golf games, I was counting a hole over par as a "life". I never got past the first hole on any golf game. For this one, hole one, 20 over par. TWENTY!) Golgo 13 - 5 min Goonies II - 7 min Gradius - 1 min Greg Norman's Power Golf - 6 min Guardian Legend - 20 min (Got farther than I thought I would...) Gun.Smoke - 9 min Gun-Nac - 10 min Gyruss - 5 min Heavy Barrel - 3 min Ice Climber - 5 min Ice Hockey - 12 min (Played one game, lost 11-3.) Ikari Warriors - 3 min The Immortal - 4 min Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - 2 min Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - 3 min Iron Tank - 5 min Ironsword - 1 min (I so should have lasted longer in this one...) Ivan Stewart's Off-Road - 30 min (I thought at some point you would lose enough that it wouldn't let you continue... instead I just finished the game... in 7th place I think.) Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf - 12 min (Man... could we get a longer name...) Jackal - 2 min Joe & Mac - 2 min Journey to Silius - 3 min Joust - 4 min Kabuki Quantum Fighter - 5 min Karnov - 5 min Kid Icarus - 1 min Kirby's Adventure - 9 min Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf - 6 min Legend of Kage - 5 min Legend of Zelda - 4 min Legendary Wings - 1 min (I always think I have this game. I don't.) LifeForce - 2 min Little Nemo - 2 min Little Samson - 3 min Low G Man - 1 min Lunar Pool - 10 min (After it was all over, I should have stopped after I lost my first ball. Instead, I played until game over.) MC Kids - 6 min (I wasn't even sure you could die in a McDonald's game. You can.) Mafat Conspiracy - 5 min And here's a vid of my death's. Not sure if you'd call it a "highlight" reel or not... lol (Oh yeah... I also review a couple sodas... NuGrape and Goody Blue Pop.) Nintendo64
Just want to thank wongojack for introducing me to this thread, it should be fun tracking my individual game times in the future. Here is a small list for the week, hopefully next week I'll be able to get in some more time for retro gaming. NES Castlevania - 20 Minutes This is a classic game i used to play when I was a kid, always one of my favorites Castlevania 3 - 25 Minutes Castlevania 3 returns to the original Castlevania style of gameplay, although I also enjoy the RPG style of Castlevania 2 as well. Nintendo 64 Destruction Derby - 10 Minutes This is a different style of game, you ride around the city and get in first place by hitting cars coming in the opposite direction, overall its not a bad game Sega Genesis Super Monaco GP - 25 Minutes This is a very good racing game for the sega Genesis, I actually enjoyed playing this one Nightmare Circus - 4 Minutes It is pretty comical how bad this game is to play. Its a funny idea for a game, but the controls are bad which makes it not fun to play. PS1 Castlevania SOTN - 10 Minutes I need to get into playing this more. One day I will complete this game Edited September 15, 2020 by Nintendo64

Out of curiosity, did you mean Nightmare Creatures? I see there is a Nightmare Circus for the Genesis/Mega Drive but it appears to be Sega exclusive so not sure if it also exists on Nintendo 64.
