9. Xevious (Atari 7800) - 57 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Chack'n Pop (SG-1000) - 798 min. (PN#5)

9. VIC-20 (40)
10. Atari 8-bit (32)

Chack'n Pop, the spiritual predecessor to Bubble Bobble this week dominates with 27% of the total gameplay. While it is a borderline case if it is pre-NES (technically on level with ColecoVision and MSX1, though released simultaneously with the Famicom that otherwise marks the cut-off), it also brings the system into #2 on the systems list, only defeated by the evergreen Atari 2600.

Chack'n Pop (SG-1000) also becomes member #419 in the 1000 Minute Club with a total of 1324 mins. It is the first SG-1000 game to enter that club, compared with 37 NES games, 5 ColecoVision games but none MSX1 games.

I was 20 when I got the Atari back in 1981. Loved it and still do. I was a little old when the NES came out thought it was great. I played Tetris and Super Mario Every day for years But nothing else. I still have my original NES hooked up to a CRT and play it a few times a year. But with the Atari high score clubs I’m always on my 2600.

That is interesting because I only owned a couple of games myself for the NES, but I was about 4 when I  first got the system. I usually played Castlevania, Ghost N' Goblins, Double Dragon, and Goal. The rest of the time I was renting games because they were expensive. I would later on get Super Mario 3 and another handful of games.

There are so many great games to play on the 2600 that I never got to try when I was a kid.  It was cost prohibitive.  Now I can get these games for $1 to $10 usually.

There's also the Harmony Cart which allows me to play any game I want to download.

My best friend had an NES and then the SNES and so on and so on.  He kept up with the times.  I played that when I visited him but for some reason I never had

any desire to get one for myself.

That is good information to know. I actually owned NES, then the Sega Genesis.  I was able to own a N64, PS1, Sega Dreamcast, PS2, then finally I bought a PS4 which I dont play nearly as often as the retro consoles. Each time I bought a new system back then, I would trade in the old one with the games, and get next to nothing for them, because I didnt have much money back then.

Neo Geo is back, as promised! Best multiplayer system ever, perhaps?

Neo Geo AES/MVS
KOF '98 - 35
Metal Slug 5 - 20
Neo Turf Masters - 119
Shock Troopers - 34
Garou: Mark of the Wolves - 41

Genesis/MD
Mad Stalker: Full Metal Forth - 43

This is a new official port that was released on the 17th. It's pretty good! I just checked Japanese Wikipedia and it lists the title as マッドストーカー FULLMETALFORTH so perhaps the title should be Mad Stalker FULLMETALFORTH instead, and indeed on the title screen, cart label, and box art there are no spaces in there between the FULL, METAL, and FORTH, but whatever is good works, I suppose.

Arcade
R-Type - 6
R-Type II - 6

Atari 8-bit:
King Tut's Tomb - 12 min.
Lorien's Tomb - 12 min.

Interton VC-4000:
Circus - 3 min.
Crazy Crab - 3 min.
Flappy Bird - 2 min.
Super Knockout - 14 min.
Treasure Hunt - 8 min.
Winter Sports - 11 min.

Tandy MC-10:
Blink MCX [Robert Sieg] - 50 min.

My gaming this week consisted of a last few rounds of the month long A8 HSC, plus that I brought out my Interton VC-4000 which I haven't played on since March 2018. At first I thought it was faulty but it turned out that Rolo's multicart was put into 16K ROM mode (I might've used it with some bigger G7000 ROMs recently?) while all the VC-4000 games run in 8K mode. One of the good things with the multicart + adapter is of course that I can play all APVS 1292 games, even those never released for the VC-4000 like Super Knockout, which is a quite decent Breakout implementation, well in line with the Atari 2600 one plus that since this system uses analog controllers with automatic centering, it enhances the gameplay.

super-knockout-vc4000-207.jpg.dc52e4b62d5c79ac0d77c14390b8d5db.jpg

Finally, I was introduced to a new MC-10 game on Facebook. Two of the most prolific at the moment are Jim Gerrie and Robert Sieg, of which the later has made a game for the MCX-128 mode where you control a dot, jumping over obstacles and being able to stick to the ceiling at some places. It took me quite a while to get through the first two screens, though I played this one through emulation as I didn't have the motivation to bring out my Alice for this just yet, a game that is work in progress.

Here are my times for this past week (September 21st through 27th) on classic systems:

Arcade:

Jr. Pac-Man - 9 min.

Atari 2600:
Private Eye - 97 min. in 2 sessions

This week I mainly played Private Eye on the Atari 2600 where I mapped out cases 2 and 3 though I didn't manage to complete them because from Case 2 on the time limit is very tight, and I didn't manage to meet it... in Case 2 you have to cross 48 screens in 120 seconds, and in Case 3 you have 240 seconds to cross 106 screens, so that's less than 3 seconds per screen in both cases!

Then I threw in a game of Jr. Pac-Man, but only one.

A couple games for me this week...

NES

Metal Gear - 180 min (I had started playing this last week and got a decent ways in before I died, so I kept the password and decided to go ahead and finish up the game.  Got stuck at one point, because I forgot about saving Dr. Petrovich and his daughter and looked up a guide.)

Game Gear

PGA Tour 96 - 120 min (Yes, it took this long...  I had changed the options to make it show more detail, and it had to redraw everything after every shot, so it took a while.  Got 10 over par for the round, playing at Sawgrass.  Got an eagle on the second hole, but everything else was pretty much bogies and pars.)

Colecovision

C-So! 13

Caos Begins 20

Children of the Night 14

Knight Lore 5

Majikazo 11

Popeye 9

Zaxxon Super Game 30

Zombie Incident 12

Colecovision stuff played via the CollectorVision Phoenix.  We may need to classify the CollectorVision differently at some point.  I know some of these games benefit from using the built in SGM and there are going to be some exclusive games for the Phoenix (or already are).

Atari 2600

Astroblast HSC 32 minutes

Circus Atari HSC 114 minutes

Eggomania  20 minutes

Gopher FB HSC  13 minutes

Solar Fox 54 minutes

Street Racer HSC 40 minutes

Warlords HSC 15 minutes

Played four paddle games for the HSC.  First time I played all four and I really enjoyed all four.  I found Circus Atari to be really good.  Being an active member of HSCs really makes me play a lot of new games I always had but never played which I enjoy a lot.

Well another week goes by, and I played a little more this week than the last.

NES

Xevious -                                           3 minutes   I wish I could have played this more, but just like wongojack stated last week, this game seemed to have cheap enemies and they just seem to avoid you.

Castlevania Extreme Hack -            5 minutes Again I don't know if were counting these Hack games since they are not official releases, but like most Castlevania hacks for the NES, I really enjoyed this one.

Sega Genesis

Shinobi 3 Return of the Ninja Master - 10 minutes  I found it enjoying to throw the ninja stars in this game, and strategically figuring out when to use the special attack.

SNES

Secrete of Mana -                             15 mintues This is a really fun game that reminded a little bit of the Legend of Zelda on the NES. I hopefully will be able to play this game more in the future.

Ninja Warriors   -                               10 minutes A very fun beatem up game for the SNES. I rather enjoyed this one a decent amount. It seemed like a very difficult game, but with some practice I might be able to gast past the first few levels.

PS1

The Contra Adventure -                      5 minutes  The Contra Adventure is a pretty good contra game, although I found it to be rather difficult. I still feel that the original Contra and Super C for the NES are much better games.

NBA Showtime -                                  14 minutes  I feel like this game is an overlooked one. NBA Showtime is 2 vs 2  NBA Jam style game that  is worth playing if you get the chance.

Hot Wheels Extreme acing -                20 minutes This is a really fun racing game that I feel is in a category of its own. You race around from a car, then car transforms into a boat, then finally you transform into a airplane. I found this game to be really fun, and would recommend it to anyone.

Here's the summary for Week 39, running from September 21 - 27. We logged 2852 minutes of eligible play, playing 70 games on a total of 16 systems.

Top 10:

1. Circus Atari (Atari 2600) - 303 min. (#4)
2. Alien 3 (Game Boy) - 291 min.
3. Metal Gear (NES/Famicom) - 180 min. (#9)
4. Astroblast (Atari 2600) - 172 min.
5. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 120 min.
5. PGA Tour 96 (Game Gear) - 120 min.
7. Neo Turf Masters (Neo Geo AES/MVS) - 119 min.
8. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 115 min.
8. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Master System) - 115 min.
8. Space Invaders (Atari 2600) - 115 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Circus Atari (Atari 2600) - 303 min. (PN#3)
2. Astroblast (Atari 2600) - 172 min.
3. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 120 min.
4. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 115 min.
4. Space Invaders (Atari 2600) - 115 min.
6. Private Eye (Atari 2600) - 97 min.
7. Street Racer (Atari 2600) - 56 min.
8. Blink MCX [Robert Sieg] (Tandy MC-10) - 50 min.
9. Warlords (Atari 2600) - 43 min. (PN#2)
10. Zaxxon Super Game (ColecoVision) - 30 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. Atari 2600 (1121) (#1)
2. NES/Famicom (359) (#3)
3. Game Boy (300)
4. Neo Geo AES/MVS (249)
5. Sega 32X (160)
6. Game Gear (120)
7. Sega Master System (115)
8. ColecoVision (114)
9. Genesis (83) (#5)
10. Tandy MC-10 (50)

This week features a tight race between the Atari 2600 HSC game Circus Atari and Alien 3 on the Game Gear, and many small contributions just edges out one bigger logging. Apart from two games requiring some sort of hardware expansion - the MCX and SGM - the pre-NES list is all Atari 2600, which also shows on the systems list.

Hopefully I didn't omit any games this week.

As for adding more systems, I think ColecoVision games requiring the SGM or running on the ADAM are OK to list with the others, but games only playable on brand new hardware, even if it is 2D and mimics old stuff should probably go into the Modern tracker. We already have a bunch of Dedicated Handheld and modern calculator games over there, so the Phoenix wouldn't be left to its own devices among all the Switches, Xbox Ones, Ocolus Quests etc.

The Collectorvision Phoenix is a homebrew console!  Pretty amazing right?  It plays original Coleco carts as well as homebrews that require the Super Game Module or the FA18 upgrade chip.  You can order a Phoenix if you want to from the Collectorvision website.  They are going to do another run of Xhundred consoles to give another set of people to have access.

Yes, released in 1978 so just after the Atari 2600. Some people claim it came out already in 1976 but that mostly is a combination of misunderstanding and urban legends. Actually it is a whole family of software compatible consoles in the 1292 Advanced Programmable Video System (APVS). I don't think they either of those were sold in America though. These also are predecessors of the Emerson Arcadia 2001 which has slightly better graphics but otherwise very similar hardware.

The Tandy MC-10 is a home computer released in 1983, with the intention to compete on the very lowest end of the market. Unfortunately there already were computers on the market that were both cheaper and better, so it was relatively short lived. Tandy already had the Color Computer series which was higher end. While the two models are not directly compatible, they're similar enough to let some software be portable.

I have to admit I'm intrigued, despite the price and lack of analog outs. I noticed that it plays Atari 2600 games as well -- does it do that through the native cartridge slot, or require an adapter? A zero-lag, HDMI-capable system that plays Atari would be an interesting thing to have.

  It's all I have.  I might try some other systems someday, but like I said before, there are lots of good Atari 2600 games I never got to try when I was a kid.

Also there are some very good homebrew games and more constantly being made.

It only accepts Colecovision carts natively, and it does not currently accept Atari 2600 carts.  It has a built in SD slot that lets you load roms for any core you want which is the current method of playing 2600 titles.  They have announced plans to sell a cart adapter.  I actually haven't tried the 2600 core at all since the first week I got the thing.  It was ok, not as good as the current version of Stella, but certainly more than passable.  There have been several updates to the core since then too.

I'm not sure if it is a choice anyway as it seems that pre-orders are now officially closed (thread below).  And honestly, I think I would give the thing a C+ anyway.  A big problem for me is that it won't display correctly on either of my main HDMI displays.  One of them just says something like "invalid format" and the other makes this harsh clicking noise behind the gameplay.  There's also a problem where it won't switch off properly and you have to unplug the HDMI cable each time you power it down.  I use it with an HDMI to composite adapter.  Don't get me wrong, there is A LOT of good in there, and I'm not going to return it or anything, but it isn't the answer to all your classic gaming needs or anything like that.
