Can I buy a UAV board in the UK for 800XL?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting my UK (PAL) Atari 800XL up-and-running again after many years.  I've come across the "plugin" version of the Ultimate Amiga Video board and found it available via thebrewingacademy website in the USA.  Sadly I've been stung several times with additional import duty fees when buying from across the pond - I'm in the UK.

Can anyone recommend to me a UK source where I can buy this board?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Nope, unfortunately not.

I really think we need a European supplier as well as a US one.

Postage from the US is preventing me from buying anything US made at the moment 😭

Thank you for confirming. I suspected as much after looking through this and some other forums.

It is a pity. After postage and the occasional import duty surprise the cost can be often be 3 times higher or more.

Time to have a think.

Perhaps you could find a couple of other people that want to buy it and share postage? I got one myself in a batch of five (IIRC) which was ordered by somebody I know.

As far as I know, user @tf_hh  (loacated in germany / EU) will offer a new version of an improved UAV solution soon...

Available expected in march 2020...

I just watched the Todd Nerd cave  video of his install of the board but when he showed the 'upgraded' video it seemed to have weird movement going on with letters 'moving' etc..

Is that just the YT encode?

Edit: Just rewatched and the same is evident in the unmodded picture but the new brightness seems to accentuate it?

It looks like an issue between the Recording cam (frame rate) and the AOC Monitor...

I would love to wait for a new version.  However since I don't have a TV or monitor with RF (or any more room for more screens!) I decided that I would bite-the-bullet and order the UAV plugin version being sold by brewingacademy.  Time pressure is an issue - later on this year I'm going to start being very busy in the evenings & weekends and won't have time to indulge my retro hobby.  If I want a working system by then I'll need to go with what's available.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions.

Hopefully, I'd hate to have bouncy text :)

Then again I'm kind of torn here, I think I want to do this mod to my 130XE BUT do I really want it sharper, I sort of like the memory of the poor old composite on a non HD tv, I think I've said before how Monkey Island Amiga and Monkey Island then seeing it on my PC, it looked so rock solid and sharp all I could see were individual pixels blocks where before it wasn't as clear and less colourful but sort of looked cartoonish on the Amiga...

Hmmm....decisions decisions :)

In regards to the video posted just above. I see something similar with pretty much all of my older AV modded consoles. In my case it is because of the motion compensation that is built into the Extron 7SC I use for all my older analog stuff. It is what I call 'Pixel Shifting'. I don't normally see it happen too much on static objects and text. It only seems to happen on my setup when games are in motion. A good example would be the maze walls in pac-man or Ms. Pac-man having a slight warp effect to them around the player sprites. It is as if Pac or Ms. Pac were the 'One' in the matrix of their mazes.

So I wonder if it is something similar in this case as well with the equipment that is converting the composite and s-video to VGA/DVI/HDMI that is in use on the monitor or capture device?
