Stone #1 Posted July 11, 2003 Finally got around to playing this today, and I must admit I wasn't expecting it to be all that great. All I'd seen of it was a quick glance when Thund3r was playing at JFUK (and literally, a couple of seconds) and I was expecting it to be terrible from everyone's reviews. So I went into my first race, bombed out at every corner and ended up resetting after a couple of laps, from sheer frustration. And then I played in Free Practice mode for a little...and learned how to take the corners After that I really appreciated it...it's a great game, visually like a souped-up Virtua Racing and with very catchy music, especially on the title screen The trick is to brake when entering a corner and to avoid steering hard at any time, cos if you do this when travelling full-speed you seem magnetically attracted to the nearest wall If this was fixed the game would be much more attractive to new players, though once you've been playing for a bit it's actually easy enough to control and fun to play. So yes...that's my £0.02, maybe I can convince a couple of other people to pick it up for next-to-nothing and have a 10-min blast every now and then Stone

Tempest #6 Posted July 11, 2003 maybe you meant 0.226138? I wish! If .02 Euros = .22 USD I'd be one happy man. Actually I meant 0.0226138 Tempest
Stone #7 Posted July 11, 2003 I wish! If .02 Euros = .22 USD I'd be one happy man. Actually I meant 0.0226138 Well if you wanted your post to have any relevance to mine you'd have said 0.0326142 since I said £0.02, not €0.02 Think we'd better drop this before I get any more confused Stone
Tempest #8 Posted July 11, 2003 God damn it you're right! Why they use normal looking money symbols instead of those fancy little designs. I swear you can't tell those things apart from a distance. Can't mistake $ for anything else... Tempest
NE146 #9 Posted July 11, 2003 All I know is I paid about $35 for my Checkered Flag.. and I don't even have the box nor instructions anymore
Gunstar #10 Posted July 11, 2003 I agree with Stone, I've always felt CF was a decent game once you can master the controls, they can be mastered, and I think the graphics and music are spot-on otherwise. It could be smoother, but it's sufferable in the frame rate. The REAL problem is lack of good A.I.; if you get good at controlling the car, you win easily all the time and that's boring too. It is good to pop in once in a while for a few minutes just for the music a scenery though...and dream of the cars, AI and control of WTR mixed with the graphics and music of CF (but with all the courses from both games of course!). jaysmith2000 #14 Posted July 11, 2003 it's a great game Only if you redefine the word "great". To each his, her or its own Stone I honestly hate this game. Give F1/WTR a shot and you'll never play CF again! Jason
holy_fluck #15 Posted July 11, 2003 I thought this game was not too bad when I first got it (which was not too long ago) but I know I cant compare them, I have been playing alot of Colin McRae Rally3 on Xbox and then going back to CF it was really hard, the control which I had mastered weeks before are now a terrible and I cant stay on the road anymore. I still think the music is really good and the only reason I play the game. But for the racing fans you should give CMR3 a try (Its my fave racing game on xbox) and only Rallisport Challenge comes close on the X
Stone #16 Posted July 11, 2003 I honestly hate this game. Give F1/WTR a shot and you'll never play CF again! Wrong...wrong wrong wrong. Remember I own a copy of WTR (original too, before we launch off into another of the misguided 'what does copy mean' threads again please ) WTR has roughly-comparable graphics (slightly worse that CF imho) but the control is definitely much more like the general idea (though I found it slightly sluggish...could just be me). I could really do without the cutscenes in the pitstops though; I mean, I already know I'm missing a front wing (from the huge flashing FRONT WING MISSING message), I know what it looks like and I REALLY don't want to watch a video of it being replaced, especially if it involves a 5second loading delay! It should have been fairly easy to buffer this, too; your entry to the pit-lane could be detected a fair way before you stop, so working out which clip was going to be displayed ahead of time and copying the first section into some spare RAM to eliminate the delay wouldn't have been too difficult...the loading time is one of the most irritating things about the game for me, and it completely breaks up the arcade-y feel. Just my thoughts I'll happily admit WTR is an overall better game, but it's not perfect, and CF is still fun, to me at least. Maybe I'm just easily pleased Stone
