Did you see that TI-99/4A in a PEB

Recommended Posts

Actually, you can put the console into a Rave PE-2 if you purchased the appropriate interface card when you bought the PE-2. I suspect that less than 10% of the 100 or so PE-2 boxes sold had this additional interface card though, as I have only ever seen one of them in the wild (out of the dozen or so of the PE-2s that I've owned or seen in the past).

Pictures?   Where's this documented? :)

I don't own one (I didn't get one for either of the PE-2 boxes I own)--but the PE-2 manual documents it. . .and as noted, I've seen one person who actually had one in their PE-2. I don't think the manual is on WHT though. Looks like I need to dig mine out and scan it in one of these days. . .

Ok so basically this is a replacement PEB that had a main board hookup in part of it?

Yes, it was a PC case and it expected you to put shorting leads on the regulators to bypass them. It had a custom card cage in it with an extended backplane--adding a 34-pin extension to the usual 60-pins. The only card that ever actually used the additional connections was the console interface board. It required that you took the TI mainboard out of the case and connect it to the interface board. It also let you use a PC keyboard with it.

It was the only TI aftermarket PEB to actually sell more than a few examples. One other was the MicroStuph board sold by Ryte Data (I have one of the boards but not the case it was designed for). Both of these required the shorted voltage regulators, and caused a lot of problems later, when folks tried to move the cards back to a regular PEB and accidentally blew up their systems. . .failure to remove the shorting wires is a very bad thing in this type of situation.

Yeah sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen. I have a stack of blown up boards with the regulators removed I've gotten from various people.

So basically NO there's no way to use the TI in a stock PEB ..only in one that nobody has and nobody can get. :)

Almost true--a SNUG SGCPU is a modified TI console for the PEB--but it does need an EVPC (1 or 2) and an HSGPL card to work, as the three cards together replace all motherboard functionality (and add some additional things too, like some AMS memory).

There was the sort of pbox made by Captains Wheel. I was a 3 card interface the plugged directly in the side of a of a console. I think I purchased mine from Harry Wilhelm.

Had a member in our VAST group that had a Rave 99 PE-2 with the console adapter card. I was over there about every weekend trying to get the damn thing working for him. He also had a Myarc HFDC in the box which I think complicated the matter.

I haven't ever seen this one. I do have a three-slot side-attaching sort-of PEB, but it exposes the cards and looks like it may have been a one-off made using the plans for a simple 3-slot PEB out of Australia.

I have a Rave PE-2/C. I am currently putting the board into a tower case, as somewhere the top shell of the case has come up missing. Was going to use a Geneve (or the upgrade when finished) and  TI with a TIM as I ha d planned many years ago. Just have to wire a ATX PS to act like the original.

I had one of those back in the 90's I had my Geneve in.  Wish I still had it.

The are a couple of pictures that found there way to my HD a few years ago.  I'm thinking Schmitzi originally posted them (because his name was on a file in that directory).
