_The Doctor__
They did work very hard to remove Pluto from everything though... perhaps if we hold tea and no tea, we will find an improbability...

Ricky Spanish
NASA had nothing to do with Pluto's demotion. It was the International Astronomical Union. "DEAR IAU, YOUR MOM THOUGHT I WAS BIG ENOUGH" -PLUTO
itzmike
With al due disrespect to the IAU, WE DO NOT DO SCIENCE BY ROBERTS RULES OF ORDER. More so, when you do not follow the rules of order in the first place.
_The Doctor__
But they went along with it anyway, as the public voiced some thoughts and opinions (to put it mildly), NASA modified their verbiage.
ClausB
The blame is on Pluto itself. There's a natural line between large bodies with fairly circular orbits, and smaller ones with more elliptical or perturbed orbits. Pluto crossed that line. ClausB
Even the 1980s article on which ASTRO.BAS is based gave Pluto less respect. It claimed 1 arcminute of accuracy for all other bodies and 15 for Pluto, IIRC. Edited May 31, 2023 by ClausB

JagChris
I read NDT's book on Pluto's demotion and watched the Nova special on it. The hate mail he got from the children was hysterical. I thought one of the demotion assertions that Pluto doesn't clear out its own orbit of junk was reasonable.
_The Doctor__
Pluto gets hit with meteorites etc just like every other planet. I think that counts. Some crap gets pulled to the surface some doesn't, have you seen all the space junk in Earths' orbit? It's not clearing it... we need demotion. Look at all the crap in orbit of other planets too, oh but wait portions of that crap can be organized junk around some of them so that's different junk maybe. If there is enough gravity to hold junk in orbit... Edited May 31, 2023 by _The Doctor__

It's not clearing it... we need demotion It's not about stuff in orbit around Pluto (or in orbit around Earth) getting cleaned out - it's stuff sharing the same basic orbital path around the Sun as itself getting cleared out that they were talking about. But even then, it's not absolute because you have outliers like Jupiter that are so massive even relative to the Sun that it creates its own quasi-stable areas relatively equidistant ahead of itself in its own orbital path and trailing itself. There are so many of those that they get their own term - Trojan asteroids. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter_trojan Earth has at least a couple at the L4 Lagrange point. There are probably more, just too small to observe, both there and at L5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_trojan
Ricky Spanish
Maybe Uranus should be demoted as well as it axial rotation is nothing like any other known planet in the solar system. What about Titan ? It should be classified as a planet cause Titan is larger than Mercury and more massive than Pluto, with a much denser atmosphere than Earth. With oceans / lakes / rivers / mountain ranges / canyons . Edited May 31, 2023 by Ricky Spanish added info
_The Doctor__
Yup it hits stuff and stuff hits it. That counts as clearing it's orbit (around the sun) and it clears crap in orbit of itself. They really went out of their way to rationalize the attempt at demotion, unfortunately. That leaves quite a bit left to be desired. This leads to all sorts of criteria that can be applied to other planets and planetoids. A square is a rectangle but most rectangles are not square. We know this because of observation and precision in definitions. When they tried to justify demotion, precision went out the window. That is why there was so much animosity around the decision that many found laughable. Don't worry Pluto, your a planet... We got your back. _The Doctor__
I don't think any Planet cares. We could all be gone tomorrow, the Earth will survive, it won't care either It's okay if we care though. But what if they really do care, how would we know? What is the answer to life the universe and everything? hmmm deep thought... Edited May 31, 2023 by _The Doctor__

Ricky Spanish
42 is an interesting number. Egyptian Book of the Dead, 42 questions are asked to the dead. If the dead could answer the 42 questions, they would be allowed to enter the afterlife.

That's 6 days of heaven with one day of rest to recharge and re-fill so to speak. Yeah - 42 is a happening number!
