bfollowell
I'm looking to start my 1088XEL build in a few months and am considering installing a VBXE to increase my display compatibility options. I'm also interested in the added features and capability of the upgrade. My main concern, if you'd call it that, is that I read an ongoing thread somewhere, that I'm having trouble finding at the moment, concerning the fact that the VBXE uses a PAL palette instead of NTSC or having it selectable. Is it really that noticeable? I'm in the U.S. and have never seen a PAL machine or an image from one that I know of, so I have no idea what the issue is. Where does this typically show up? I've heard rumors of a green Basic screen instead of the Atari blue I'm used to. What else is different? Does it show up much in games? While I'm really interested in the VBXE, I really want to experience my Atari the way I remember my Atari, at least in terms of colors. Is there an option to change from a PAL to NTSC palette? If I'm hashing over old topics that have been covered to death, I apologize.
+Stephen
I would say it's not that noticeable, but I've also been using a PAL machine for at least a decade. There is no way to alter the default palette, nor store two and have them selectable. However, there is a very easy way to load whatever palette you want in the machine after it has been started up. I don't know if this would be an acceptable solution for you. I think it should be possible to create a PAL and an NTSC core, bu I do not know where or how the default palette is stored in the cores. bfollowell
Loading after booting every time would definitely not be optimal, but it would give me what I wanted. I'll see how much I notice it if I decide to go that route. Thanks.
