AdeptRapier
So FYI, I was checking the status of Wii COD Black Ops multiplayer yesterday, 4/9/20, and there were over 5,052 players online!!! Pretty good for a Wii game in 2020 ?
Punisher5.0
It must be a popular game. There was a guy that made a video about playing PS3 games online in 2020 and the same game had over 700,000 players at once.
AdeptRapier
Wow, that's cool. I would expect the PS3 to have a lot of people regardless, but to see this many still on the Wii, or even WiiU games is pretty cool. I hope more Wii / WiiU owners keep getting online so the experience remains for as long as possible.
Austin
I wonder if not having to pay anything to play it online has anything to do with it. Very interesting regardless.
Video
You don't have to pay to play it online? Cool. Been a while since I played cod (of any type) It was to bad Wii basically got the middle finger from Activision, I'm not a huge PvP fan, but do like the cod series, for some reason. atarilovesyou
Time to join in! Oops, looks like I have MW3 only. Still, aren't all the Wii servers done? What are people playing it across? Too bad nobody out there is playing Wii U Runbow... Edited May 7, 2020 by atarilovesyou
danny_galaga
I thought they had canned the servers years ago?
Atariboy
No, Wii online multiplayer was handled by the publisher. Nintendo never had a centralized "Nintendo Live" service for online multiplayer, with matchmaking duties and hosting instead being up to the publisher of the game to arrange and manage. What ended years ago that saw a lot of publicity was Nintendo's own GameSpy contract that saw their own games go offline. A variety of Wii games stayed online afterwards, with Activision leading that front. In fact a Wii game or two with online multiplayer even came out after Nintendo had shuttered their own online multiplayer. Steven Pendleton
Don't these games all use peer-to-peer anyway?
