rensoup #1 Posted April 15, 2020 Current one: jawclash_current.mp4 New one 3: jawclash_new3.mp4 New one 4: jawclash_new4.mp4 New one 5: jawclash_new5.mp4 New one 6: jawclash_new6.mp4 extra question: any other sfx we should update ?
Mclaneinc #2 Posted April 15, 2020 I'm torn between 3 and 6, they both seem right...Should it be replaced, yeah, why not..Make it a real Atari version.. And I must say its looking top drawer..
+skr #3 Posted April 15, 2020 I just want to mention, that none of the options is really bad. Even if I have a preference for option 3 I´llbe totally happy with whatever you will finally use.
ivop #4 Posted April 15, 2020 I voted #5 before, but switched to the original. Just because it is original I know TIX updated the sprites, too, but still. There's not too much difference between #1 and #5.
_The Doctor__ #5 Posted April 15, 2020 (edited) The others don't have the scrape chong scrape going on.... and the tink is out of place, it would have to blend in better and sound more like metal so I changed from leaning 5 back to ORIGINAL for me... manterola #6 Posted April 15, 2020 I am so excited about this release that I really think that all options work. None has the metallic sound of the original, but it really doesn't matter. Thanks again for this amazing game.

rensoup #8 Posted April 15, 2020 Don't forget, I'd also like to know if we should update other sfx ?
Jacques #9 Posted April 15, 2020 While 5 reminds more of a gunshot than powerful slicer and 3 I earlier preferred has a bit too high frequency of metallic sound, I changed my mind to stay with ORIGINAL. It's missing metallic effect, but at least original sounds powerful enough.
rensoup #10 Posted April 15, 2020 Just to clear some confusion, the current one is not the original sound, it's just a one version among others. It might sound closer to it though.
TGB1718 #11 Posted April 16, 2020 3 sounds right to me
rensoup #12 Posted April 16, 2020 Thanks all, it's good to know. Sometimes, things get a little hairy behind the scenes so hopefully this'll help us move forward.
pseudografx #13 Posted April 16, 2020 I'd go for some kind of blend of the current one and #3.
Rybags #14 Posted April 16, 2020 3 has that high pitched pure tone at the end that sounds just wrong.

Exactly, if only that metallic tone was a bit lower, it would sound much better. Anyway, I still can't quite believe Atari PoP miracle we're discussing here!😍 Edited April 16, 2020 by Jacques
Gunstar #16 Posted April 16, 2020 Current one sounds best over all, not as metallic as I like, but all the rest sound worse to me, even 5 that I said before was a toss up between it and the current one. Number 3's end "tink" sounds like hitting a xylophone with the bar held to prevent reverberation...terrible.
emkay #17 Posted April 16, 2020 hehe Every tune on POKEY sounds metallic or "watery". But no one can make a metallic effect for the metallic blades... A real comparision is possible, if the same type of recording is used ... btw.

Interesting, it seems a bit too much of a "crash" sound at the beginning... I think the current one in the game is heavier and more "windy" which suits the slicer better but that's an interesting take on it. Looks like it only needs 2 channels ? not sure why you're using 4 ? TheNightOwl #20 Posted April 17, 2020 I liked the original one the most but thought 6 was pretty good too with that metallic like sound at the end. Will add I'm not making comparisons to how the other platforms handled it as I never played the game before so going into this with fresh eyes and ears. 🙂

But it looks there's only 2 different notes: E-1 & A-1 (Not a RMT expert so I could be missing something) ? rensoup #22 Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) Here's the current jawclash in RMT for anyone interested. It uses 3 channels... The nice thing about sound in PoP is that it was designed for the Apple2 so it's really limited: 1 tune or 1 sfx which means it's a good opportunity to show off Pokey as sfx can use all 4 channels. Of course more channels means more CPU time but since I'm using dmsc's LZSS, decoding a single channel take 2-3 scanlines. edit: I've been very surprised with what Pokey can output, it seems you can get digi like sounds with at just 50hz when using several channels popsfx_jawclash2.rmt Edited April 17, 2020 by rensoup
