Season 17 Round 7 - Urban Champion

This time we're competing for the highest round completed.  If there are any ties then both players will get the points for whichever place they're in and the next place will be skipped.  For example, if two players are tied for first place they'll both get 25 points.  The second place will be skipped and the next player will get 17 for third place and so on.

Bonus Games
These are optional games where you can earn up to 25 extra season points per game.  To claim a bonus, post your final score in the current game thread anytime during the season.  Feel free to post multiple times if your score improves as the season goes on.  +5 season points will be awarded, up to 25, for every run/goal you score over the CPU.  For example, if the final score is Player 3 and CPU 1 then points earned are calculated as (3 - 1) x 5 = 10.  An additional 5 points per game will be awarded to the player who submits the highest score differential.  The bonus for Golf will be +5 season points, up to 25, for each stroke under par and an additional 5 for the best score.

General HSC Season Rules:

  • To participate, just post a score to the thread. Anyone can join in at any time.
  • A picture or screenshot is encouraged when posting a score but not required.
  • The season is 14 rounds long.
  • Games will be posted on Sundays and run two weeks through Sunday at 11:59 PM CST.
  • Do not exploit game glitches, take advantage of 1-up loops or intentionally die in order to replay a level.
  • If "point pressing" is not specified in the game rules you should be moving forward in an attempt to complete/loop the game and not "camping" for points.
  • No emulator save states, slow-mo, rewind, etc.
  • No cheats, e.g. Konami code, Game Genie, etc.
  • Turbo controllers are allowed.
  • Round points are awarded according to the following chart:

It really is a very slow game.  I started a few rounds myself over the past weeks and just didn't have the patience to finish it.  I was determined to stick at least one game out and get to the end.  I imagine that this is what playing a prototype of RBI Baseball would be like.  It just feels unpolished.

Baseball came out 5 years after Home Run for the Atari 2600. I guess it was good for the time, but it has not aged well at all.

I don't think there is one.  Sometimes you seem to get lucky and you can do the same move over and over again to the computer just takes it, other times the computer seems to be super aggressive and won't let up.  It's weird.

My strategy for when the computer was being really aggressive was to dodge to keep them from pushing me backwards and then counter punch.  I could often catch the fighter while he was winding up and knock him down.  The first couple of attempts I didn't realize you could dodge backward and only made it to around round 15.  I also almost exclusively used the strong punch with B.  The weaker A punch didn't ever seem very useful when I tried it.  The last thing I noticed, and I could be imagining this, is that it seemed easier to land a punch when I was backed off the opponent a bit and not right up next to them.  The computer appeared to be a bit slower to block in that position.

 

Frankly I don't have enough experience with this game to say whether I got lucky or any of the above makes any difference.  I'll have to see if I can repeat this over the next week.

Yeah that doesn't happen until you get to round 150 or something (When the rounds go into hex).  I watched it in a video on YouTube.

52!  I keep running out of time.  When that happens the other guy will just wail on you and there's nothing you can do.  The cop even came by and he was still hitting me!  Speaking of the cops, they're so annoying!  Not only does it take an eternity for them to go by, but it eats up so much clock!  Also I swear that guy with the flower pot comes out every 3 seconds on the higher levels.

 

I always pause it when I die to take the screen shot as I can't stand seeing my opponent get showered in confetti...

Nice! The cops are annoying. According to the instructions, if time runs out, the cops are supposed to take away the player who has been pushed back the furthest. I haven't run out of time tho. That's hilarious that the guy was hitting you when the cops came by. Also, ? for pausing before the opponent gets confetti. Screw that guy anyway. He obviously has the cops in his back pocket...
